The fact this is an entire lesson and not just a cover literally recorded, edited and uploaded only a few hours after the song was out is extremely impressive haha
I think what you described as "what you hear" is combining the bass line with the guitar part. The second part sounds right to me but the first way sounds like it has the bass line blended in.
It’s in the key of D for sure but I just want to point out the genius (maybe?) in their selection of chords. The use of the 5th degree in pretty much all the chords except for D and Gmaj7 really help add to this unresolved unsettled feeling- it creates this longing. It is especially apparent when playing in standard (as in music video) because he isn’t play a G or Gmaj7 but he plays the octave of G which adds further to the feel of longing as now the 5th degree and the 7th r left out of the g chord before it cycles back to the only complete chord of D, as the rest is just built off of the root and the perfect 5th. I think their selection of chord voicing and intentionally leaving out the 3rd degree in this way really expresses the longing and the unresolved feeling of their journey and then reuniting again. Such a simple yet great song with a genius chord structure to help drive the story and feel of the song home.
well since we are getting into the weeds... the standard tuning version does make that omission, but the recording DOES include the major 3rd of the D chord. I do agree that the chords create an unresolved longing, though I would argue that this comes from the Bm chord and G chords only having the root and 7th. Either way, Tom's chord voicings are unique and definitely one of his signatures!
Right on! Class of ‘03 over here. First heard Dude Ranch in 7th grade, then Enema as a freshman in high school. How cool is it that they’re still going!
right? I was like, "I guess I should use the Tom guitar even though it's an acoustic" and I was surprised at just how good it sounds for this clean strumming (gave a nice slightly broken up tone). Pleasantly surprised
Hi. Thank you for the video and writing out the rhythm, that helps terrible guitar players like me. What's your estimated for the song's bpm? I found online 115 bpm but that feels too slow relative to the song and your video? I am reading the rhythm in your video as 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 ... but maybe the song is doubled timed? So 1 e & a 2 e & a 3 ... etc? Thanks for your thoughts!
As a self taught middle aged guitar player who’s only played a couple years… thanks for this. Definitely gonna cover it! I drop covers on my channel just to catalog my journey getting better. Just subbed your channel I love learning anything I can get my hands on.
@@EricBourassa Here you are sir! Hope I did your lesson justice I only have a couple years under my belt playing guitar! Even credited you in the desc. Hope I did it justice! th-cam.com/video/dhzvJHGQnB4/w-d-xo.html
been looking for tabs, but none would be like Tom plays, when you said "the most Tom Delonge thing ever" I knew I found what I was looking for, I was very close by earing but not a pro at all.

I may or may not have planned my entire day around the release of this song 😅
@@EricBourassa 😂😂😂 well done
Thanks for sharing this! My wife and I saw them live a couple weeks ago. Absolutely beautiful song!
@@TRose-hc9pv totally! I saw them live a few weeks ago here in Fort Worth. Excellent show.
Well done! Cheers from STE!
This was the best man. I really like how you didn't have to use tuner to change from drop D to E standard. I appreciate your video. Thanks!
right on!
Great analysis, thx ❤

Just came from the music video. It’s so nostalgic my god. Thank you for the tabs! 🤘
Yeah they really hit all the highlights of their career in that video. It was like watching my life flash before my eyes
Hey man, just found your channel, and love this. I’m a class of 01er, and also play and grew up on blink. Great stuff here.

Dn so glad I looked up the tutorial thought it maybe not out yet GOOD WORK THANKS
Fantastic video. This was the first I’ve watched on your channel. Liked and subbed!
Thanks! I appreciate that 🤘
Nice, I know what I'm learning tonight!
Great job man!

If you’re only one guitarist, would you play it in drop d or standard? Thanks!
@@sharkdive7 I think I’d go dropped D for this one?
@@EricBourassa Thank you!
Your realization killed me. "like twenty years ago 😐 Wow! I'm old"
Thanks 🙏🏻🙂🙌🏻
You are amazing
Wow I don’t think anyone has ever said THAT to me before. I’ll take it!
The way he plays it in the video is SO untitled/box car era tom.
100%
Great video brother, appreciate it in both tunings!
It's not in drop-D. Its as Tom plays it in the video, you can hear the A note on the D string continuing to cut through the mix.
Just a revised version of “Not Now”, very Tom style of playing. Nice video man.

You can count it as 80bpm or 160bpm (roughly) depending on how you want to subdivide the beats
Thank you @@EricBourassa!
"and then we do the most Tom Delonge thing ever..." had me
I am still crying...

it's soooo Tom Delonge
It' s like Not Now shape
YES exactly
just heard the song
what do you think of it?
@@EricBourassa I've never really listened to them. But wow that song hits hard. Makes you reflect big time. The vocals are great on this song.
Drop D?
yes
No chorus??
There’s only one guitar part for the whole song. The chorus is the same as the intro and verse.
I thought there was a layered guitar using a different variation of those chords. I'll have to go back and re-listen
I do love this lesson btw!
@@warriorx1328 I provide both parts
It’s not exact but close
Right on. What’d you get that’s different?
these chords arent even close
really?
