  • Basically since we had to wait for a cam chain tensioner we went ahead and checked valve clearance and glad we did! She needed an adjustment! New shims for everyone!
So follow along for a full how to tutorial (kind of) on a full cam removal and re shim on this CBR900RR.
These procedures are very similar for many different shim under bucket Japanese sport bike. Check your service manual for specific information and steps for your bike!
Thanks for watching and hope you subscribe!

how do you get slack in the cam chain tensioner? and is that needed in order to do the valve adjustment. I ask bc I just bought a cbr 929 2001 and am going to attempt a valve adjustment for the first time ever. Thanks for the vid!

Take the bolt off of the tensioner (10mm) and with a small screwdriver turn clockwise. The tensioner will close. If you're just inspecting the clearances, no. If you have to pull the camshafts for any reason then yes, it comes out to allow slack to the cam chain.

Did you happen to run the bike before doing the valves? If so what did it do and how did it act?

The bike was running OK but the cam chain tensioner was fused and not putting any tension on the chain. Lots of chain lash was the sound. Normally you won't necessarily hear anything unless it's so bad that a piston is coming in contact with a valve. It'll sound like a small knock and if you hear that... shut the bike off immediately and check them for spec.
Rule of thumb is: Valve inspections/adjustments are just as important as regular oil changes. Don't ever let it go just because it all sounds good.

@@MotoMedic well I have one I've been building for a drag bike and it starts up perfectly fine but when I go to give it throttle it surges really bad then shuts off. Brand new carbs brand new ignition brand new everything and it does it still.

@@MotoMedic it surges about 4 times before shutting down ,so someone told me to check my valve clearances and I did yesterday and they were all tight as hell my thinnest feeler Guage won't even go in and it's. 002 is that more than likely my problem or could it be something else as well?

@@Rodeshion Tight is bad! Definitely time to pull the cams and re-shim.

I don’t rag on my bike (2019 Honda 1000RR) I do run it but , I’m not racing. Mostly mountain roads. Does it help when I have to check shims (16,000) being easy on it?

    • @MotoMedic

Always check them on the recommended mileage based on the manual. Adjust when needed. That's the best way besides regular oil changes to keep it running as long as possible.
