  • Using the skills and friendships we built in FLL, we decided to get together as FLL alumni and attempt to design, build, and program an entire FLL robot in 12 hours.
This video shows the result, and while it is not a realistic depiction of what our robot can do reliably given a real tournament situation (some video editing magic was used), hopefully it can still inspire other teams to think even more creatively about how it is possible to design an FLL robot.

Very cool and inspirational. The crazy giant jigs are cool. Love the wheeled cart that zooms to place the pipe section.

Good Job, this was really creative but take care you are not allowed to lift the flower, the flower must rise only due to a big water placed there. Please read the rules carefully.

That is not quite correct. The rules state that at the end of the round, the flower must be held up by the water alone. The yellow flower-lifting rail was pulled away by the robot after the water is in place, so we satisfied the letter of the rules.
      Good rules-lawyering, keep it up!

HALtheWise I am afraid your incorrect as I read the rules again and it says that the flower must RISE only due to a big water placed there so it isn't talking about the end of the match its about when the flower rises so that's clearly when your robot lifts the flower. It seems that we have different opinions and I'm feeling okay with that I am just trying help you and make the constraints clearer to everyone. Good luck.

There's however an update to the rules which states:
      FOUNTAIN AND FLOWER RISE (11-7-17)
Each of these missions requires something to “rise,” by any method, and to “stay there” due only to a Big Water in the required place.
      So this contraption is legal.

The key is whether the requirement is underlined or asterisked. Asterisked requirements are methods that must be observed during the match. Underlined requirements are conditions that must be true at the end of the match (see the blue side bar at the beginning of the mission rules for the official definitions of these marking methods.)
Since the requirement regarding the flower is underlined and not asterisked it is only checked at the end of the match.

Also, this wouldn't work in a competition without peanalties. You can't leave the parts there.

That has been true for some years in the past, but Hydro Dynamics had no junk penalty.

You caught us! Good spot! There's actually two small sections in the video where we had to use movie magic to show functionality that we had intended to program in. Neither is a section that would have been particularly tricky to make work autonomously, we just ran out of time in the 12 hour build limit, and really wanted to show you the complete round as we had planned it.

...not counting the tiny touch at 1:05, which was an accident...

Totally understand! Amazing work for a 12 hour run!
