  • We are a FLL team sponsored by the Central Iowa Christian Home Educators.
    This is our 2017 robot in action. Our run takes just over 2 minutes leaving plenty of time to yell and holler while the official timer runs down.
    In the interest of full disclosure, we could never make our Water Treatment model function properly so we added weights to it when the toilet lever is depressed. This was to overcome a malfunction of our mission model not a problem with our robot.
    To answer a common question, the robot does fit completely within base at the time the start button is pushed. It is also under the 12 inch starting height limit. We sent an email to FIRST's robot game Q/A address and it was confirmed that it was legal to go outside the game field after the match starts. There is also an official update that showed that it is fine to be outside the South and West border once back in base.

    Yesterday our team attended the Iowa (Saturday) Championship. We came away pretty happy. We won 2nd Place Champion's Award as well as tying for top Robot Performance, however our next lower point scoring run was lower than the other team so we were awarded second place for that event. Our top score was 230.
    We hope to post a video of one or more of these runs online.
    Just like at any event, the theory we hold that robots get "stage fright" and odd things happen during the competition held true.
    A few interaction problems with mission models kept us from achieving our best, but that is the nature of the game.
    To show that we are a real team made up of real people, our scores were 140, 230, and 85.
    Our first run found our horizontal arm sticking to the mat and having difficulty sliding objects but we took a touch penalty after our robot got stuck and then run a "salvage mission" and managed 140 points. We suspected that the mats used at competition were less worn smooth than our practice mat so we upped the power of that function and corrected the problem.
    We then had a complete run that went smoothly, unfortunately a pipe fell off while moving, the fire truck didn't lock into our arm as expected, and fixing the broken pipe became bound on something so didn't sit properly at the end of the match. We may be forgetting something else but ended that run at 230.
    Shortly before our final run, we realized that we had left a piece of our "thwapper" arm behind at the last run. We hastily rebuilt the missing piece but apparently didn't have it quite right. This caused our arm to trigger early and blocked our robot progress. We used another "salvage" mission and came away with 85.
    On a bright note, our robot interview went fantastic! Thank you to those that gave us suggestions for that part of the game. Our robot went through the missions with near-perfection and that judges seemed to really like to hear what we had to say.
    We are awaiting our judging rubrics but the entire team (and coaches) felt that they did well in the project and core values interviews.
    All in all, we had a great time and hope teams continue to be inspired to keep upping their game!

    nice. this is one of those robots that everyone is going to underestimate because you can't change attachments, then suddenly faint because you do so much in a single run.

      No, it folds up against the robot until the arm starts moving. Everything is legally within base at the time the start button is pressed.

    Coach here.
    This is the best robot that doesn't use power take-offs of this year. Probably by a long distance. I might go so far as to call it an engineering work of art, perhaps in the Rube Goldberg school.
    We (my adult FLL friends and I) are particularly impressed because the arm both lifts and extends, and it lifts more than we would have expected. What did you use to lift the arm? Also that you did the whole thing in one run.
    I saw that you went to the regional last weekend. How did you explain the innovation of the Robot design?
    Good luck at the state championship. I'm sure that a good presentation will get you the Robot Design award.

      Thank you for the kind comments. To answer a few questions: A rack and pinion gear system lifts the arm... it is powered by a large motor. As far as the robot interview, it was a very odd interview with the judges asking very little. It was early in the day and they had part of the mission field build wrong so some time was wasted correcting that. We tried to explain our innovation as a system that wastes no time in base for attachment changes. We also described the main movements as being much like a CNC machine.
      We are hoping to create another video showing close ups of the mechanisms for this robot.

      Coach again -- You probably know everything I'm going to say here, but I suggest you look carefully at the rubrics and explain your solution in a way that applies to them. Its not enough in Robot Design to say what you did, you need to explain why you did what you did, what alternatives you considered and what your improvement process was.
      In preparing for Robot Game, perhaps think about the following questions:
      - HOW did you decide on an integrated approach vs a modular one?
      - You could have used the CNC machine analogy with out the second motor lifting the arm -- WHY add the lifting mechanism?
      - HOW did you make the trade-off between hardware and software complexity? -
      - Once you decided on an integrated approach and an arm that moves in two dimensions,
      - HOW did you determine how strong the arm needed to be? Did you test the strength needed? How? What were the results?
      - HOW are you documenting the design process? (The video showing mechanisms is good, and don't forget to mention it in Core Values -- its an inspiration to other teams)
      Depending on the quality of the Judges, they may have asked few questions because they were a bit out of their league and didn't fully understand what they were looking at. Make it easy on them and explain the how and why clearly, and practice your Robot Design presentation with people with backgrounds similar to your judges.
      Also, though I referred to the "Rube Goldberg School", it was meant humorously. You want to make sure the judges don't see your design in that light. Make sure they see it as VERY well thought out engineering.
      Good Luck in the Regional, and I hope you get to the World Festival in April! (And a special nod to the RoboSavages, who were Tops in Robot Performance last weekend!)

    great stop motion! dumbfounded at how all of that fits in base. sidenote: you guys might want to fix the bending of that linear actuator that does pipe replacement, flower, and other missions. might break during a run..

      Probably about 2 months and then constant "tweaking" of various attachments.

    How does the big arm not break when you lift it up?

      It took some trial and error to get it right but if viewed in cross-section, the arm is something like a "plus" sign. There are ribs on the top and bottom to add strength. Having said that, there is a limit to how far the arm can go out from the robot before it flexes too much and will not lift.

    Tha... that thing is a huge monster. I couldn’t stop laughing since this does 395 points in ONE SINGLE RUN while we can barely do two in the same program. I wonder if it’s legal to have lego outside of the main walls though.

    In the scandinavian final, they said that if any part of the robot was sticking out of the table, the whole run would be invalid.

      The following is copied directly from FIRST challenge updates: UPDATE 8 - BASE RETURN LENIENCY
      A Robot entering Base will be considered “completely in Base” as soon as it matches the 2nd picture
      in Rule D07 even if there are portions of the Robot or something it has transported partially past the
      west or south border walls. This leniency does not apply for Launches.
      Prior to this rule update being released, we sent an email to official FLL robot question address and received confirmation that this would be legal so long as we didn't touch it after part of the robot leaves base.

      No gyro sensor this year. As the robot only moves left and right, did not need one. We use 2 color and 2 touch sensors.

      Limiting our robot to traveling along the wall without making any turns frees up 1 motor for us to use elsewhere. This helped us a lot so that we could do so many things in one go.

      We did not qualify for World Festival as we received second place at our state competition. However, we were invited to attend the FLL North American Open to be held at Legoland in California in May 2018

      Im pretty sure they used four which is allowed. I think he only used 1 motor for the wheels at the bottom and used the other 3 for the attachment. Again which is allowed.

      Correct, we use 4 motors. 1 large motor "drives" the robot between east and west. This gives us 3 others to work with. One extends and retracts the large arm. Another lifts the large arm. And the 4th gives us the horizontal swing motion.

      I hope you have realized by now that your robot is considers "Out of bounds" Every part of your robot has to be within the field boudaries, and your masterpice has some parts leaning over the side.
      This robot is stll amazig though!!!

      It has worked well for us. Very repeatable results. Unless a mistake is made in set up, it works well. Not easily seen are touch sensors and light sensors that help ensure we are in the right position on the game surface.

    Unfortunately the starting is out of base. However when the robot returns after a run things may be out of the table such as the side of it.

      The robot is actually entirely in base at the start of the match. It folds up so that nothing is outside of base. It is also (just barely) under the 12 inch height limit. After pushing the start button, it unfolds. Our team confirmed with FIRST by email that part of the robot sticking outside the game mat is acceptable. Also rules update reads:
      UPDATE 8 - BASE RETURN LENIENCY
      A Robot entering Base will be considered “completely in Base” as soon as it matches the 2nd picture
      in Rule D07 even if there are portions of the Robot or something it has transported partially past the

    Your robot is cool, but how can you transport it? My team has a very small robot so we can drive under the cloud and save time. I think it’s more challenging to build a very small robot reaching 535 points than a huge robot.

    It is not the greatest idea to put all of your missions in one run. If one thing messes up, the whole mission will be a fail. The robot is awesome though!

      Funny that you mention that... During our 1st run, it would not move at all. It appeared that a motor wire was not plugged in completely. Fortunately, we had created a short "Salvage" mission just in case thing went really wrong. Got points, at least.

      We had highest robot game score at regional. Didn't get our top score because of some issues that came up (we are working on a video of those) but still had enough to pull it off.

    Everything is beutiful exept the fat that a part of their robot juts out of the mat and thaat is not allowed. Acording the judges, if u have ANY part of the bot jutting out, then u have to STOP the run

      only 4 motors (EV3 only has 4 motor ports regardless of FFL rule limit of 4): 1 motor drives wheels, 1 motor extends the large arm, 1 motor lifts the large arm, 1 motor swings the horizontal arm.

      Please see our description but there is not any specific FLL rule this year that says one cannot do this so long as the entire robot fits within base at the start of the match. There is also an official rule update that allows parts of the robot to be outside of the game mat and be considered "in base" when it returns into the base area.
