At University, I had optional classes of Cutural History of Death. When discussing about the imagetic representations of death and the appearance of the decay or skeleton figure (the Reaper), the depiction of the Death as an Archer was said to be a representation of the Plague. Not necessary one specific plague episode, but of the peril and lethality of diseases and infirmities that surrounded life at the time. Death as an Archer could be seen as an indicative of its silence an quickness to kill, but also of how it kills by the bunches, hitting plenty and fast; targeting anyone indiscriminately and from far away, as no one could exactly know what caused. Can't say if it's for this specific reason, but the fact that the image shows it holdind/shooting multiple arrows, it kinda gives said vibe.
Yup I agree. I wouldn't have had all the background for it, but the character design usually isn't done by chance. There often is a deeper meaning or message. Especially since those characters aren't just doodles but thought out and planned projects
To anyone curious and looking for more in-depth reading on late Medieval Europe imagetic representation of Death (but not necessarily on the "Archer Reaper" topic), on Johan Huizinga "The Autumn of the Middle Ages" (1924), there's an specific chapter about images of Death and concepts like "la danse macabre" (Dance of Death). The Reaper (or Decayed) as an Archer can also be seen in other pieces like: - Bartolo di Fredi "Trionfo della morte" (1360) in Arezzo (Italy); - Giacomo Borlone de Buschis "Trionfo della morte" (1485) in Bergamo (Italy) - with the presence of not only an "Archer Reaper", but of a "Hand Cannoneer Reaper"; - A specific fresco in the former Abbey of Saint André de Lavaudie (France), with a woman (Plague?) holding stacks of arrows, surrounded by people struck by arrows on the neck and armpits (places where buboes normally appeared); - A fresco in the Convent of San Francisco in Morella (Spain), sometimes called "Danza de la vida" or "Árbol de la vida", with a skeleton archer standing next to it, saying "Nemini parco" (I spare no one). - The Struggle of Men and Animals against Death and Time, by David Vinckboons (1576-1632); - The XVIII Century statue of "La Muerte Arquera", by Baltazar Gavilán, in Convent of San Augustin in Lima (Peru). That's all for now. Share some more stuff if you're aware of other historical and bibliographic references.
I'm actually impressed because i have a bow and arrows too and they never fly in a straight line because of their flexibility. An arrow of mine once flew straight at a target and then started to fly a curve and ended in the same position it would've had if it flew straight through the target. My teacher once said that they can land everywhere in 180° in your radius

In the middle ages and the Renaissance the grim reaper mostly was depicted with a bow or a javelin. The scythe was added in the late 16th/early 17th century.
I haven't seen enough of this creator's content to know if shooting at targets so close to the recording device is a common occurrence here. But that was easily the most suspenseful, frightening, and coolest thing I've experienced on TH-cam in a while. I knew from what I'd seen before that he was skilled, but Holy crap that precision and skill is beyond my imagining.
I am impressed that the archers could hold the arrows like that and shoot them one after the other quickly and fairly accurately. Five hundred years ago Indians of the subcontinent devised a bow assembly that could shoot multiple arrows without the archer holding any in his hand. People always have been both skilled AND inventive. Thank you for demonstrating this technique, and for putting it here for all your f us to find. 👍👍
The archer was copied from an earlier painting titled, "The Struggle Of Men and Animals against Death and Time" by flemish born artist David Vinckboons who died in amsterdam in 1629. This was not found in a traditional 'crypt' but rather inside a burial vault. Located inside the Church of the Nativity in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Loreto in Prague, the vault was commissioned by Countess Elizabeth Apollonia de Kolowrat and completed in 1664. The artist is unknown, but each of the murals in the vault is based upon popular art of the time.
That one on Vincboons painting using only one arrow. But I agree author of crypts decoration copied that, there's also copy of Rembrandt's Rising of the Lazarus. We don't know who was the artist, but he was probably not from Holland, cos they were protestants and builders of the church and crypts were catholic.
You are by far my favorite "weapon expert covers fictional weapon usage" youtuber. You seem to always have something positive to say about the subject, unlike most youtubers who just want to talk about fantasy not being historically accurate. I appreciate your enthusiasm. Also yeah, that skeleton is pretty awesome, and the clouds/background look fantastic.
That speed shooting, with such a great stance is quite aesthetically pleasing. Great to see you testing out the different ways it might be interpreted.
My first thought was Apollo and Artemis. They get associated with random unexplained deaths a lot (this is a key moment at the start of the Illiad) and after some Christianization the image of a deathly archer delivering disease or sudden death via arrow as kind of an alternate grim reaper vibe could have a neat historical through line.
It also wouldn’t surprise me if the image was made during or shortly after an outbreak of deadly disease. The reaper going around indiscriminately striking down the living is a popular motif when the general populace is keeling over left and right.
Remember, kids. It's worth learning archery if only for a fact that when you become a skeleton, you can be an archer skeleton, and we all know they are wayy cooler.
This Fresco was actually a character taken from a full painting. The Struggle of Men and Animals Against Death and Time by David Vinckboons. In it, the archer fires indiscriminately into a crowd to signify how death comes for all, regardless of class.
