  • Black 5, 44871 is seen working 'The Birmingham and Shrewsbury Christmas Express' charter.
    First seen arriving at Shrewsbury station ,then, after the passengers have left the train, heads on to nearby Coton Hill T.C., with class 57 diesel, 57316 on the rear. Later the loco heads back through the station to turn on the triangle and returns back to Coton Hill for servicing.
    Finally at night the railtour returns to pickup the passengers and heads back to London Paddington.
    An interesting station , with 2 large signal boxes, ( Severn Bridge Junction Box, was once the largest operational box of its type min the world), and still plenty of semaphore signals around.

    I really enjoyed watching the video - very atmospheric! There are four signal boxes in Shrewsbury. The big one (Severn Bridge Junction) IS now the largest mechanical signal box in the world still in use, following the closure of a larger one a few years ago in Sydney, Australia. It has 180 levers about 90 of which are still in use. It is a grade 2 listed building. The other box seen in the video is Crewe Junction Box where the Crewe and Chester lines separate. It has 120 levers (not sure how many are in use) and is also a listed building. Just to the east of the triangle, the train passed Abbey Foregate Box which has 93 levers (again not sure how many are still in use). A short distance to the south of the triangle is Sutton Bridge Junction Box where the Hereford and Aberystwyth lines (and formerly the Bridgnorth [Severn Valley] line) separate. It has 61 levers. I was in school in Shrewsbury many years ago, and a regular train spotter; I still enjoy watching trains of course! There were seven signal boxes in Shrewsbury then.

    A cracking show, thank you. Great to see the in-between movements too. Yes the box was the largest mechanically operated box in the world. Great that it is still performing, though I don't know how many semaphores are attached these days. It needs preserving for as long as possible as a monument not just to engineering, but also to the dedication of generations of signal men over so many years.

      Thanks Robert. Yes I believe the box has a preservation order on it. 😀

    Is the use of a DPU at the rear compulsory??…VK6GIA

    • @philclarke3203
      @philclarke3203  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No not compulsory, but usually necessary for operational reasons, and for a backup.

    Yes, quite evocative of the years I spent train watching as a young lad (70+ now). There's one thing I have to know. Why all the release of steam on departure? I don't recall that as a youth. I've seen it happen in many other videos. That photographer at the platform end probably thought he had a great location. All he'll end up with is grey fuzz. I notice that you kept well clear.

    • @philclarke3203
      @philclarke3203  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, yes I have learnt to stand well in front or behind a departing loco where possible. It seems to be a bit controversial , as to how much it is necessary . The idea is to open the drain cocks to release any condensation in the cylinders, and avoid any damage. Thanks for the comment Robbie.

      @@philclarke3203 Thanks for the reply, Phil. Maybe the way locos are used nowadays, as opposed to being in use all day, has led to this procedure. Perhaps we'll get lucky and an expert will explain.

    Superb video. I was born in Shrewsbury into a Railway family, my grandfather was a driver here for most of his adult life and my father was a fireman/ guard here for most of his adult life.
    I could still make out my favorite train spotting area which I loved to spend my summer holidays at.
