Grew up in Pittsburgh and love your drone photos of the changing colors. Every time your camera goes to your double garage, I wonder why you haven't built a wooden deck on the back of your house so you can sit out in the evening and marvel at everything you two have created and obviously love about your property. And a deck will give you protection from rain and snow when you drive home without having to open your garage.

50 years ago a builder told us to determine the size building you think you need, double that and then add 10 % and over the years, that has been right on.

With all that expensive equipment and attachments it makes sense to have another building to protect that investment (and a fuel tank) ... PA weather (and winters are very hard on machinery, so I use a lot of fluid film to prevent corrosion) ... and remember it effects electronics to too, switches, solenoids, magnetos, brushes, starter motors, connectors, batteries, grounds ... and as I mentioned before ... YT Fact Checkers have found that Mikes statement of "that ought to be it for stone for awhile" was found to be mostly incorrect ... I always liked the Pole Barn idea where it's open on the long run like the drying shed you built from rough milled lumber ... it's easy access for larger machines and attachments and keeps a lot of weather out ... doors can be complicated, but added later .... HD tarps can work in a pinch on covering the opening ... and being a carpenter for 40 years I can tell you a Dust Collection machine is worth its weight in gold indoors ... lot of good, inexpensive custom build as you go components ... and remember, airborne dust in an enclosed building is explosive and also brutal on the lungs ... I knew a guy who had to be hospitalized to remove years of built up wood and drywall dust (he never wore N95 masks because he wore glasses and they fogged up, his excuse)

I have a barn about the same distance from my house where I keep my tractor. One thing I do is save enough room at the house for the side by side. In my case and for you, it is nice to have the side by side somewhat warm to jump into to drive down to where the rest of the equipment is. just for a warm seat as you first face the cold and it keeps the battery warm for that initial start before going out into the cold.

Expanding the woodworking operation. Now that's a great idea. I've been a hobby woodworker most of my life. May I suggest moving the dust collector near the top of the priority list. Keeping the fine wood dust out of your lungs and off of the floor makes the entire experience much more enjoyable.

This is my PERSONAL OPINION, but you put way too much time on picking, cutting, moving and splitting your wood. If it's mostly half dry (or something like that) get a PalaX C900.2 with X-Aim, if it's fresh get a Palax D410 / KS 45S or a big Japa. Call Metsa machines...
If you would only do firewood (or just make it for fun) excavator/chainsaw/splitter would be ok. But with multiple businesses, family and "life" you don't have the time to play around.

Yes, a CNC-router needs dustcollection (should be integrated in the machine) and needs a warm place. But I don't see how yhat would be a problem? A designated dust collection is quite easy to build. I would say that the "enterprise" is at a cross-road. They/you can keep it at a "fun thing for the family" or go all in.
If it is on a "fun thing for the family" level it's the same how the "wood-pit" works. But if "kiln-dryed bundles" and kiln dryed lumber is the way then the gameplan changes.
I don't have the ultimate answer, but the decision will have to be made. Good luck and God bless!

Mike you are right. A building is never big enough. 12 years ago I built myself a retirement shop here in Minnesota 30 x 78 with in floor heat (You'll love it). Everyone thought it was too big. My comment at the time was I never heard anyone say they had too much room in a building. Well I'm out of room. Be careful with your wood working side. My woodworking takes up a third of my shop and I don't have a CNC machine. I want one, but no room. Another third for vehicle maintenance with a lift and the final third for storage of vehicles and such that need to be kept warm. I love the sweatshirt Mike I have a t-shirt with the same design. Good luck and God bless.

I was one of the group that thought quietly that you needed a bigger building than the one ya'll built. 60x60 would be great for the new building down by the wood.processing center. If you get a kiln, that will take alot of space. It will fill up quick. The. kiln as well as staging wood and storage of finished product. Then add space needed for tractors, attachments and tools. Big HELLO to the family and stay safe. See you on the next video.

Good morning Morgans and all! 41F/5C here in the western Ozarks. Finally clear after about 48 hours of dreary cold rain. I hope the fall progresses quickly here; I checked out a deer stand location and visibility in the woods isn’t good yet. Too many leaves on trees and underbrush.
Even you two knew there’d be a time when the vast expanse in the building would fill up. Adding CNC wood milling and a spot for the excavator probably took a chunk of it. But you’ve got a solution that’ll probably be more efficient and solve other needs too, such as the roof over the Woodmizer mill and a place for the splitter and conveyor in the off season.
    Have a day!

The other day you mentioned a 30 ft flag pole. Just want to bring something to your attention regarding the position of the pole. I have found this to be a problem since I have a 30 ft pole. I like to fly a 5x8 flag on my 30 ft pole. It looks to be the right size. The problem comes in when you fly it at half staff. The 5x8 is about 9’ long on the diagonal. That means if the top of the flag is at the 17 ft marker the flag hangs about 8 ft from the ground which appears to be well below your gutter level. This will mean the flag will be constantly rubbing on the gutter/facia of your bldg at half staff. You might be better suited to mount your flagpole further from your bldg somewhere.

I just bought 2 fuel tanks from a local (to me) company called WeMac Fuel Tanks. They are located in Atchison Kansas. They build to order and quoted me 12 weeks to build them, but I think I ended up getting them in about 10-11 weeks. It was about $4400.00 with tax for 2 tanks, one 1000 gallon and one 300 gallon. That includes the pumps, hoses and nozzles. They appear to be really nice quality and should last a lifetime. 1k gallon will be on-road diesel for my Peterbilt and the smaller will be off-road for my skidsteer. You might give them a look, friendly to deal with.

Sounds like a great plan you guys - keep the non-hydraulic equipment out of the warmth and maximize the living/woodshop space. Dust collectors are loud also guys - may want to make an attached shed-like, lean-to enclosure to let it sit in (outside the main space), and feed the collection ducts into the shop. Remote controls will turn them on when needed but you're not hearing all that racket...

Mike, You mentioned that you were going to fill up your 4 gallon propane bottle. If you take it to places where you exchange bottles for somewhere in the $25 range you are only getting about four (4) gallons of propane!!! Weigh a refilled bottle and you will see what I'm talking about. If you have a large tank (250 - 500 gallons) for your home you can fill the 5 gal. bottle right from it.... It's easy !!!!!!

    • @h.w.kueckelhan2322
      @h.w.kueckelhan2322 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Sorry I should have said your " 5 " gallon propane bottle!! Weigh the full tank. Then subtract the tare weight of the tank that is stamped on the top of the handle section of the tank. Then divide by 4.2 and that's how many gallons of propane you paid for.

Before you buy a fuel tank, check with your local farm co-ops. Around Northern Arkansas and Southern Missouri, a lot of the Co-ops will set a tank for free (or a very low cost yearly lease) if you become a co-op member and buy the fuel from them...and they will probably be your best rates for off-road (or what everybody around here calls "tractor diesel").

    Suggestions?

Mike, you need to stack that wood. You will get a much better product and increase the amount of wood you can store by 20%. You have proven that yourself on video. Granted it will take more time but stacked neatly with cross stacked ends you can go much higher with your stacks and the circulation in the wood will be much better too. You KNOW this to be true as you don't just dump fill your baskets and you try to keep the wood you use in nice neat stacks and not just piles! You KNOW this!

Once your firewood fills the firewood bin cover it with a tarp for the winter; uncover on sunny days.

Did I see right? Does your wood conveyor have hinged wheels so they can be turned and the conveyor pivoted on the loader end?

THANKS for another Great video. Here is an ides, it might not be as big as you want but it might be a start for a diesel tank. Check Arms Family Homestead, Daniel put together a 100 gallon tank with a pump and puts in on a dolly in his shop. I've thought about the same thing but put it on a metal or plastic pallet and put it under a shed.

I, and many farmers, use a heated shop for workshop/warm up area and other storage areas for just storage to keep machines out of the elements. My rule is to not crowd the work area.

I have not heard anything about solar to power your house or the new building. I have panels on my shop roof and I'm able to be almost off grid. Used 10 kwh last billing cycle.

Mike if you park your equipment together in the approximate space of a new building you will get a good idea of how big to build leave space for turning

When you built the building you had one idea.... then you expanded ( "now we have a building, let's put this, do this...") lol
On a tank for diesel, is it to fill machines on site?
They used to use 275 gallon tanks like for in homes that heat with oil...? See plenty of those I believe.

Hey like your channel. re concrete woodpile area, why not a plastic tarp if you plan to dry the wood. Rain and snow will keep it wet continuously.

Mike and Melissa, just keep peddling! You have accomplished so much and I for one love being included on your journey! I agree with the heated building logic, all you need is to keep the implements and equipment out of the rain! Finally, Charlotte has a Fall morning and I’m ready for the first snow in Western, PA!
