A most amazing bird - the one and only Resplendent Quetzal!!

- I've been trying to see a resplendent quetzal since our first trip to Costa Rica in 1986. I got a look at one in the pouring rain in 2002 but this last week was the first really good, long looks I've had and I got to film them too! Such gorgeous birds! Be careful what you dream because your dreams do come true.

I have never seen one before I watched this, amazingly beautiful
I never did see one in Guatemala, but I did see a mated pair in Costa Rica, near Monteverde. I hired an unofficial guide, who happened to be a friend of someone who worked at the hotel where we stayed, and so we got a private personal tour to see the birds. It was a dream of mine to see this bird, and I did not expect it to happen.
The first one I ever saw was in Monte Verde but it was super early in the morning and pouring rain. This one was near Paridiso Quetzales Lodge in Costa Rica which is a really sure place to see them, especially if you stay a few days.
The music goes with the elegance of this bird.

Resplendent quetzal .......Pharomachrus mocinno...The Resplendent Quetzal is indeed a fascinating bird. Its vibrant colors and long tail feathers make it one of the most beautiful birds in the world. It’s unfortunate that it’s considered near threatened due to habitat destruction. Its cultural significance, especially in Mesoamerican mythology, is also quite interesting. The association with Quetzalcoatl, a deity, shows how deeply it’s embedded in the culture. And yes, it’s the national bird of Guatemala and is featured prominently on the country’s flag and coat of arms. The Guatemalan currency being named after it further highlights its importance to the country. Thank you for sharing this rare and exemplary video. IUCN Red List....

It was incredible Wandering Sole!! You have got to see one in person someday. A lodge in Costa Rica named Paridiso Quetzal is the most reliable place I know to see them. You stay at the lodge and their guides take you out to some farmers land who gets paid for leaving quetzal habitat. Their favorite food is wild avocado. We were there this last December. I can't remember the exact range of time they are ripe. Obviously they have to eat something all year long and the Paridiso Quetzal lodge guides know where to find them. They've found if they put up perching spots near the avocado trees, like you saw in my movie, they come to perch in early morning and late evening. I've seen close to 3,000 species of birds and it is, without a doubt, the most beautiful, graceful one I've ever seen.

I’m sorry but don’t disrespect us Guatemalans guatemala is the home of Al quetzal that’s why our currency is called el quetzal and the reason my flag is so beautiful because it’s our bird not Mexicans or other Central American countries if that was the case they would of use this beautiful bird on they flag but they don’t Guatemala does and for the record Mayans are Guatemalan not Mexican my people move to Mexico because the Spaniards brought theirs diseases with them and tarnish my beautiful country just like the Americans and English

My favorite bird! Bucket list...
I've spent a lot of money on 3 different trips to try to see one. Your best chance is Paradiso Quetzales Lodge in Costa Rica. They pay local farmers to leave wild avocado trees growing and that attracts the quetzals. If you spend 2 or 3 days there, especially in December when the avocados are ripe, you'll see them.

Reading a story that includes the quetzal so came to see one. I was surprised to see its body smaller than I imagened but overall as beautiful as hoped. No surprise on the tail as the writer's description was quite clear. I realize now that my mental image of the body was based on the heart and soul of the bird so I was expecting it to be as majestically sized as an eagle. Beautiful video and thank you for using local music to showcase him. Him.....hmmm, now I need to look up male and females to see if she's like most, plainer to blend in a nest for safety. Love the internet!
Mizera if you look at around 3:19 there is a female. Not as pretty as the male but not bad. To give you an idea of the male's size its tail is about 2 and 1/2 feet long. The female is the same size as the male, obviously with a shorter tail though. They were filmed outside of Los Quetzales National Park where farmers are being paid by bird watching guides to leave some land in its wild state so that wild avocados and other food for the quetzals can survive. The birds come in to eat the avocados then come to perches the guides have put out and regurgitate the seeds. The wild avocados aren't like the grocery store variety. They have very little fruit in relationship to the size of their seeds. The male at the very beginning is just swallowing one as it lands and the same male is swallowing another one at :21. Setting the land aside is a win for the birds, the guides, the farmers and bird watchers.

Is it aesy to see Quetzal in Costa Rica's National Park?
They truly are magnificent birds. It is possible to see them in some of Costa Rica's national parks but the best, surest way is to stay at Paraiso Quetzales Lodge. www.paraisoquetzal.com/en/index.php I say that because they have guides who keep track of where the birds are coming to wild avocado trees, their favorite food. The best time to go is in December because that is when the avocados are ripe. You will have to pay extra to go out with a guide but it is worth it. Plan your stay so that you can go out at least 3 times (morning and evening are the only times they are active) so you will be sure to see them. The lodge also has some great hummingbirds.

The word "CemAnahuac" interested me because we live near the town of Anahuac, TX and Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge. From what I read they said CemAnahuac was where Mexico City is now. So my question is: What does CemAnahuac have to do with a resplendent quetzal who's range is well south of that area. Do you mean it was sacred to the Aztecs?

People arguing about where this bird is from. This bird is all over Central American like most birds they have wings so they will fly wherever they want. But they are Guatemala’s National bird. Just because it’s Guatemala’s nation bird doesn’t mean it resides there most of the time ! It’s a bird!! Idk why some of y’all are arguing about to being in Costa Rica and not Guatemala. I’ve seen them in both countries but point is i look at it and see Guatemalan history 🇬🇹 it is stunning no matter where it’s at☺️

Came here simply because I read that the mayan and aztec Serpent gods were inspired by these lads because they looked like serpents in flight.
Gotta say, I do see the form that most Serpent gods are represented in (the "the head and the wings close to it being up with the rest of the body forming an S" form. Or the in-flight version) in one of the last shots.
