This is a social justice protest song that his manager, NBC execs and sponsors refused to allow Elvis to sing, afraid of the social climate at the time, race riots etc. Steve Binder the lone NBC exec helped Elvis to get this song in right at the end of his special. Elvis was hurting bad after the assassination of MLK and Robert Kennedy and wanted to say something as the country was in mourning and chaos. Elvis struck an incredible tone with this song, which was modeled after MLKs I Have A Dream speech. Elvis was a rebel and this song's lyrics STILL resonate today.
You missed out the war in Vietnam too and I wouldn't call it "social justice" it was just common sense social justice is a little bit different as we see nowadays. He also went to President Nixxon to talk about the war on drugs too.

IMHO this was the most powerful song ever written and performed. The lyrics are astounding and it is arguable that no one could have - or will ever - perform it better. I say powerful because I honestly believe, that at sometime in our lives, we all feel exactly these words - amazing.

Contrary to what many may say, I suggest you watch him on his last tour. Just from a vocal standpoint he kills it. Perhaps 'unchained melody', 'hurt' or 'how great thou art' just to name a few.

I was 17 in 1968 when this was on TV. Everyone that I knew watched this. It was amazing and left me and my sister in law wiping tears. It was so powerful! It was the last song in the special. The big Elvis sign is on display in the auto museum across from Graceland. Wonderful World by Elvis is a sweet inspirational song. You should listen to it. Love watching these vids. Watching people hear Elvis , especially this song, for the first time in so awesome. To a person they're all blown away. Some admit they had no idea he was so good, they thought he was just a character of Hollywood's making. Then I become envious as they are all psyched looking forward to discovering the rest of his music.

He grew up with some of the best original soul, blues and R&B singers ever. BB King was friends with him. That's where he learned to sing. Formal training is one thing, but he had a Masterclass from some of the best to ever do it.

Yep- his last song & the movie holds true in that he fought the Col tooth & nail to close w it & not a Christmas song. Where the movie digresses is they use the album version. You can tell this is live as he jumbles/flips a cpl of the lines in that last stanza. All the more endearing for me. I imagine the raspy throat may also have had something to do w some nerves/dry mouth as it was one of a very few times he told the Col to go pound sand, but agree- if he could have just gotten ‘on top of his vocal chords’ I call it. No matter- beautiful song, purpose, message, & performance. I personally enjoyed the film. My husband had the incredible experience of seeing Elvis perform live & had been resistant, but enjoyed it as well. Baz Luhrmann has a frenetic style of directing, but for me, it worked. It’s a post production of a blend of their voices. But if you check the soundtrack, If I Can Dream is credited to Elvis Oresky, where as Trouble is solely to Butler. Maneskin also do a nice cover track of If I Can Dream.
He only sung this song twice for the special, NEVER sang it anywhere else. This was a very emotional song for him and he put everything into it. The special is a must see. After listening to the background of this song and those around him, during interviews. Elvis felt the song was needed during that time, between the JFK and MLK assassinations, he knew the raw emotions would not be transferred to any other performance. This has to be his most heart felt performance EVER, he knew that and wanted to keep it at that.
Still my favorite performance by him and there are many. Everything just came together for the finale of that show and I forget what Christmas song they had picked for him, it was something like I'll Be Home for Christmas. But he really wanted to do something that mattered and one of his songwriters who knew how torn up Elvis was about the assassination of Dr King and just all the unrest in general comma wrote the song specifically for him period when Elvis heard the demo he said I am doing this and I'm never going to do another song that I don't believe in. In contrast, when Parker heard it, he rejected it immediately, saying, this is not an Elvis kind of song.

I think people either forget or don't know that Elvis was first and foremost a Gospel singer so power and grabbing an audience was second nature to him. Of course he was more than likely born with a few gallons of talent that couldn't be taught but hey I won't hold that against him.

He used the rasp throughout the 68 special. There is another performance of this song in black leather from this special and his vocals are slightly more hoarse than on this take in the white suit. I bought the audio out take performances from this special and included are some cuts that were done in his dressing room like "When it Rains it Really Pours". That take is rasp upon rasp sweet goodness as if driving through Tupelo in 1945 hearing it from someone's porch. Try out One Night With You from this special in black leather. It'll be a treat. For endurance, he quickly phased the rasp out for the duration of his 1970s acts or else he would not be able to recover with back to back shows.

I was listening to the Elvis channel of SiriusXM a while back, 4-5 years ago and they said that he actually had a bit of a cold during that performance and it affected his voice but he soldiered on. I wish that my voice sounded as good when I have a cold as his did. No, not comparing my voice to his. He was just so, so good.
Elvis's talent was natural he didn't need to time or knowingly pace himself. I believe you failed to recognized he did that live in one take in front of millions of viewers.

This was the final song sung in the 68 comeback special. It was explained by the producers of the special that during the rehearsals, he was totally spent and lying in a near fetal position on the floor in the dark singing this
You also gotta remember this was his last song after singing for 2 hours on stage. Great voice!
He grew up with some of the best original soul, blues and R&B singers ever. BB King was friends with him. That's where he learned to sing. Formal training is one thing, but he had a Masterclass from some of the best to ever do it.

Yep- his last song & the movie holds true in that he fought the Col tooth & nail to close w it & not a Christmas song. Where the movie digresses is they use the album version. You can tell this is live as he jumbles/flips a cpl of the lines in that last stanza. All the more endearing for me. I imagine the raspy throat may also have had something to do w some nerves/dry mouth as it was one of a very few times he told the Col to go pound sand, but agree- if he could have just gotten ‘on top of his vocal chords’ I call it. No matter- beautiful song, purpose, message, & performance.
I personally enjoyed the film. My husband had the incredible experience of seeing Elvis perform live & had been resistant, but enjoyed it as well. Baz Luhrmann has a frenetic style of directing, but for me, it worked.

The movie version is Austin Butler singing.
It’s a post production of a blend of their voices. But if you check the soundtrack, If I Can Dream is credited to Elvis Oresky, where as Trouble is solely to Butler.
Maneskin also do a nice cover track of If I Can Dream.

He only sung this song twice for the special, NEVER sang it anywhere else. This was a very emotional song for him and he put everything into it. The special is a must see.
After listening to the background of this song and those around him, during interviews. Elvis felt the song was needed during that time, between the JFK and MLK assassinations, he knew the raw emotions would not be transferred to any other performance. This has to be his most heart felt performance EVER, he knew that and wanted to keep it at that.
One of the only songs he never preformed live. He perfected it in ‘68, no more needed to be said.

Still my favorite performance by him and there are many. Everything just came together for the finale of that show and I forget what Christmas song they had picked for him, it was something like I'll Be Home for Christmas. But he really wanted to do something that mattered and one of his songwriters who knew how torn up Elvis was about the assassination of Dr King and just all the unrest in general comma wrote the song specifically for him period when Elvis heard the demo he said I am doing this and I'm never going to do another song that I don't believe in. In contrast, when Parker heard it, he rejected it immediately, saying, this is not an Elvis kind of song.

He used the rasp throughout the 68 special. There is another performance of this song in black leather from this special and his vocals are slightly more hoarse than on this take in the white suit. I bought the audio out take performances from this special and included are some cuts that were done in his dressing room like "When it Rains it Really Pours". That take is rasp upon rasp sweet goodness as if driving through Tupelo in 1945 hearing it from someone's porch. Try out One Night With You from this special in black leather. It'll be a treat.
For endurance, he quickly phased the rasp out for the duration of his 1970s acts or else he would not be able to recover with back to back shows.

Unless you know something I don't Elvis in black leather singing If I Can Dream , he was lip syncing. This is well known.
I was listening to the Elvis channel of SiriusXM a while back, 4-5 years ago and they said that he actually had a bit of a cold during that performance and it affected his voice but he soldiered on.
I wish that my voice sounded as good when I have a cold as his did. No, not comparing my voice to his. He was just so, so good.

From a vocal analysis, I appreciate your comments. From a musical history point? Not so much. This is the most heartfelt performance of any meaningful song by any performer ever. It was indeed the last song of a show that was supposed to be a Christmas Special but Elvis had other ideas. Next time you listen to the song, just listen and feel. :)

Not only was it the last song of the special but he sang that song three times. The one shown being the last (3rd) version.
I believe there is two diff versions of this performance. Only noticeable through where his eyes are and how he holds mic in the beginning. You might pick out diff observations on the other one. I can hear diff.
