I got mine in August 2020- nickname- The Green Mile. Green Manalishi was already taken. I put 4300 wonderful miles on this bike, include a century and a couple Katy Trail 5 day bike packing rides. This bike empty is 14.3 mph bike. Very comfortable and balanced bike.
Got the same bike last fall 2022 and very solid well built. So neutral and 3X is hilarious when you currently ride mountain and gravel bikes with 1X.. Love the 1X drivetrains these days.. So l suspect the Disc Trucker does not come alive until you pack the bike with gear... That would be this summer 2023.. Love your channel
Nice video man. Thank you. Thanks to the information you gave me, I made the decision and got my own Disc Trucker and I am absolutely happy. The only hesitation I had was for the shortest chainstay. But comparing it to the Trek 520 and the Kona Sutra - two successful models on the market - I found that Surly’s chainstay is still longer. So there is no issue with the pannier bags and I confirmed it during use. I am 177cm tall with 81cm inseam and 60cm arm length. I bought the size 56 (700C wheels). Thanks again from Athens/Greece 😊
Honestly i would go for the older frameset, the 12mm thru axle fitting is a deal breaker as i only roll with Shimano hubs with steel axles and i am not willing to go down the route with a bunch of adapters, also i would like the longer chainstay.
I will hang on to my old LHT, I like the new bike but the long chainstays are what make it the smoothest bike in my stable, and they should have stayed with XT 3X10 ,the other changes are OK but the losses are too much!
Surly not only down graded the spec but also didn't fit the horizontal rear drop outs as fitted to their Troll, Ogre, ECR so a Rohloff hub could be fitted. Fail.
Who asked for a taller LHT with shorter chainstays? What used to be THE unicorn of functional long distance touring has now become just another hybrid-gravel bike? Keeping my old one, I guess...
Yep, Surly messed up, they need to keep their fleet well defined and honest for their intended purpose, history shows us that trying to make one thing do it all simply doesn't last.
what do you think of the fact that there is no replaceable derailleur hanger, but it's integrated in the frame? Sure it's steel so you can bend it back, but what if that happens on a tour and you are far away from a bike shop?
I appreciate the lower standover height and the more upright position. I don't know how to feel about the shortened chain stay since that was kind of the point of getting a lht. Also, the specs do not match the price. Overall I am pretty disappointed by this update. I hope Surly understands that being affordable with decent components is what made them such a popular brand. I would also be interested in an actual review of this bike once you get more time to test the bike instead of a spec sheet read. I would especially be interested in your honest opinion about the changes and the value. You do a lot more miles and have way more experience so maybe you know more about why Surly made the changes they did.
From riding around Minneapolis, it has a great city feel, not sluggish but also not fast, could certainly see adding some fenders and a rack and getting to and from work on it.
not really. nothing wrong with Alivio from a durability/simplicity perspective, super robust. also now the highest level shimano parts compatible with road for shifter/mech mixing (since deore is no longer 9 speed). wouldn't bother me if i was road touring.
Even though it's the latest tech, I don't believe proprietary thru axles are good for world touring. If you need to replace a wheel outside North America, it could be a problem
How much did Surly pay you to advertise the new Disctrucker? Seriously, this is not a review, did you even ride this bike ? The way you promote the “captured thru-axles” (which suck!!), how the drivetrain is "great" (it's not !!) .... you are definitely drinking the Surly Kool-Aid!

That color is a throw a way color. Unless manufacturers want to save money there is no use for this color. Wherever you look, whatever the product, this disgusting green always is in stock last when all other colors are sold. In resale it always gets the lowest price.

Disc Trucker is neutral, Very solid well built, and green looks good.. I have never packed the bike with gear but summer of 2023 gonna do some tours
You forgot a huge change. They dropped the bar end shifters for the sti shifters. That was a staple for Surly.

The official specs state there is a BB RS500 (with 2*2.5 spacers on NDS), not BB52. Can you confirm that?

It can take a dynamo hub no problem and it actually comes with internal dynamo routing in the fork.
