    Whoever said that the kid is annoying doesn't really know what it is like to raise a boy. that little guy isn't just fine, he is super smart too. Creativity isn't just about inventing something to change to world, this kid traveled across half of the city by subway and buses without a penny, that's a real life creativity for a kid at his age, ask your own kids if they can the same thing?

      It goes to show that the western style of raising kids and placing emphasis on individual values make a massive difference, even though they are immersed in Chinese collectivist culture and attending a Chinese school. They've been diligent to make sure he's culturally European/western by varying his schooling and they've obviously prevailed in passing on their culture and creativity to him. Winston has covered how Chinese kids are raised and they would not do such a thing, they stick close to their parents because parents insist on it and are coddled and cloistered even and it stifles their creativity in place of military level studying w/ little to no play.

      Rex Nain LoL, keep living in your dream, HK, Taiwan, Japan, Korea have the same type of education system. Still, the old racist stereotypes that Asians are good in school but bad in actual work. Look into data, and see how many smart and hardworking eastern Asians and Indians work in the top field of science and engineers.

    • @M0ebius
      @M0ebius 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Ray King I don't know how old you are or where you're from, but in America the education system is all about passing federally mandated tests these days. Art and music programs are almost non-existent unless you live in a relatively wealthy neighborhood with high property taxes. On the balance the average Chinese is definitely more educated than their American counterpart.

    I very much recommend going to another country with young kids, and certainly to China, too!
    My 5 year old son visited a Chinese Kindergarten for 18 month. Afterwards he spoke Chinese like a local, and his maths skill was at least a year ahead. Now he is at a Singapore school. He is a bit behind in terms of English. But no worries, he did catch up quickly after returning.
    He did pick up a bit of bad behaviour from his peers, such as the pissing habit, or snodding, speaking too loudly, hygiene issues like not washing hands after restroom. But overall, he greatly benefited from being emerged into another culture.

    My child lives between America and China. I don't want to get into the reasons but he is really well adapted when it comes to both places. Besides his mastery of Chinese and English he also is very secure around other kids and makes friends easily. His mom is very tough on him when it comes to his math. At 4 years old he is doing division, multiplication etc and what not. I think the balance between the intense Chinese way of study study study with the American way of having fun and learning about lot's of different things rather than just focusing on one subject is a great tool for his growth. I'm not a big fan of the Chinese medical care though. Usually when he gets sick there they just hook these IV bags up to him for a couple days. I'm also not a fan of the traffic, especially crossing streets there :-(

      nebulapig how is a kid at 4 doing that kind of math when their motor skills aren't developed? I'm guessing in Canada, we go by the child's Developement for their age and how that range can differ. My 5 year old is in Kindergarten but she is spending time on learning routines, turn taking, sharing, printing name, P.E, music, play, ABCs and art.

    Wow. The private school is not informing the parents when the kid was lost for 3 hours. This explains a lot!

    I road my bike all around my town when I was a kid. Certainly it wasn't a big city, but kids are often capable of more than we parents want to give them credit for.

    Many years ago, American doctor found out my nephew need a serious major surgery to his head, because the head born was not developed right, his back head looked so flat than normal Americans. Without a surgery, he will become mental retardation. The family were suffering a lot. They lived in Kentucky, went all the way to the New York Chinatown, most of the doctors there they just have more experienced about asian guys body. So after the doctor thorough examination, nothing wrong with my nephew. The shape of the back head is our Asian unique feature. Today my nephew he is doing great in high school, and going to apply for Harvard University. My point is we are different not just in cultures. Hope this story will help for people live in a different country.

    your videos , believe it or not , could be adapted to many of the Asian countries . I enjoy watching all of your videos , I have been married to a Vietnamese and have been in Vietnam off and on for 3 years and they could just as easily apply here . To a T Winston , you nail every video . I am thinking of doing a similar style for travels to Vietnam .

    Exactly, give kids an adventure. I like the escape-from-school story, that's how safe Shenzhen is.

    I would like to say, the basic value of American society and the one of Chinese society are totally different, something like individualism and collectivism. In China, children learn how to obey the community and think about what they can do for their parents, a group, a class, a country, but not for themselves, thus there is almost only one answer for everything, which obstructs the creative thinking.

    Great topic! As for the kids being behind its fine they will catch up then speak multiple languages. Far harder to learn them later in life as adults...

    I was just like that kid back when I was a child. I was born in raise in China as an American. During my elementary and middle schools years, My parents decided to enroll me into a public schools in Taipei Taiwan due to private/international school being extremely expensive. What was nice about the experience of attending public schools was first getting to know the language and secondly, getting to know the culture of the education in China as well as making Chinese friends. Only problem was, I was a 屁孩 so I wasn't the most gifted when it came to the class room.
