Played 40k in the 90's, went on a 20 year hiatus, went back to painting and playing this year. But I never stopped reading books and following the lore in all these years. I get what you're saying.

Exact same story here. The time and money costs always stopped me getting back into it.
I bought 'Warhammer:Underworlds - Direchasm' and a vallejo paint set for myself this xmas to jump back in. The low model count and no scenery made it seem doable. What really sold me on it though, is that the 2 armies that come with it are set in different colored plastic, so I can play it with my housemate as a board game, and then take as much time as I need to get the models painted. Seems much more "busy adult" friendly! It's not 40k, but if you're okay with the lore/setting/styling of AoS, it seems like a great way to start the hobby again.
      Cant wait!

For Historical Wargaming, the 'Lore' is the interest in the History it'self. There are many people I know got into wargaming because of their interest in history. I Also know many wargamers who have started gaming because they love painting the figures and then wanted to do something with the figures they had on the shelf.

  • @hangarflying

I am of the belief that the crafting, painting, and wargaming hobbies are a Venn diagram of numerous circles that intersect in varying degrees for different people.
For me, my wargaming circle is the primary bubble, and the painting circle is entirely contained within. The crafting circle is as well, but it is a much, much smaller circle, as I don’t do a lot of scenery crafting. Regardless, these things are all done to support my wargaming.
There are people who have a different bubble as their primary, and wargaming is just a smaller bubble within, because the wargaming is a vector to support their primary interest, as opposed to doing that thing to support wargaming. Some people don’t have a wargaming bubble at all-they just like the painting or crafting, and don’t like playing any games.
It’s an interesting subject to think about.

I had a cool experience yesterday. I'm painting Ultramarine bladeguard, so I did the shoulder trim as white. The issue I had was I used a lot of greys to build the white up and it still kinda looked a little pale grey.
I also had done the robes red, because I was like "fuck painting more white", I went back though and redid the robes with Zandri Dust, Ushabti Bone and Skeleton horde, and amazingly, I've found that the white looks whiter? I have no idea what happened but don;t be afraid to change painting decisions you've made!

I have 'gaming friends' that I still get together with, that I have known for 35-25 years. For the more impulsive amongst us: COLLECTING. I have a collection of codexes and magazines that I have hardly read - though I have “digested” all the photography and imagery as well as the lore (at least as far as I can read) - and I have collected models almost purely for the sake of just having them before they go out of print - but I do have intentions on painting them all. Eventually.
Gotta have all those current and back issues of WhiteDwarf to paint them faithfully to the box art! The Lore is also important because it helps you understand the details and iconography included on the miniatures - I have “unlocked” so much through reading - which has helped my painting - but has also informed me about all the important, “big deal” characters and has had me seeking them out for my collection. Darn the lore!

I would be a bit more granular with Lore:
      Reading - what GW publishes
Writing - about my own forces and where they fit in the GW universe.
I feel GW is really encouraging the latter with the narrative Crusade campaign component of 9th edition.

On the lore-only front, I was one for years, as I started with the Dawn of War games, which got me and my pals hooked on the Grimdark even when there was no store selling GW products in my whole home country, I only got into minis when I moved to Europe and one fateful day walked in front of a GW store. There are so many elements of the hobby I enjoy to be honest.
Initially reading up on the lore of the different armies before deciding what models to buy.
Then there's the potentially finding bargains in terms of the a tusk purchases, this could involve ebay second hand models, that might need stripping or rescuing.
Then there's the assembly and painting one element I actually take loads of enjoyment in is the writing of an army list, then there's the gaming.
Also making scenery is another part that is great fun, so many elements to enjoy.

I think there can be Lore in historical games in a number of ways.
For pre-written history, the stories will can between tellings/translations.
New evidence can be brought to light on what is "know" about what was written.
And people like Bernard Cornwall can write historical fiction, which can be used to turn into settings for gaming - eg the Sharpe series of novels, and the TV movies based on them, "inspired" TooFatLardies' Napoleonic Skirmish wargame Sharp Practice.

Here's a question for you. I have only ever played one game of LoTR. It was part of a demo game and I took control of Godorian infantry and archers and a cavalry troop of Rohrim. I faced a solid block of Dwarven heavy infantry and a siege weapon, a trebuchet. For two moves I unleashed my archers at which ever Dwarf infantry block that was closest and just castled with my infantry. While he fired his siege weapon in an attempt to break up my infantry. On my third turn the Rohrim hit the back of the siege weapon. For the whole game he had watched my cavalry gallop down the far side of the table from his siege weapon, shielded by houses. I rode around the back of the houses and into the rear of the siege weapon and charges with no defensive fire. In that same turn my infantry moved towards his Dwarves to pin them. Next turn it was over as I hit the rear of his a block of Dwarves. The victory was so complete I never felt the need to game it again. Is that a thing?

I feel like I have an odd relationship with wargaming. Me and my brother kinda almost got into 40k when we were kids. I really liked the mini's and the lore and we liked painting them. But I didn't have the patience to actually figure out how to play the game.
Years later I discovered Dawn of War and LOVED it. I love RTS games to begin with but DoW was just one of the best in it's class and I also loved the 40k aspect of it. It got me back interested in 40k but only in reading about the lore (aside from playing the game).
In the past few years I got a bug up my butt and wanted to actually play the tabletop game. And then I learned about GW's business practices. With the game being cost prohibitive, I thought maybe I could get a few older editions, try and find cheaper used models online, and convince a few friends to play. Now I'm also discovering a whole mess of games that aren't 40k that actually look really cool. Some of the rules are even free.
So I painted a few minis as a kid, but spent most of my time in the hobby reading lore. And soon I'm gonna try and play a few games that probably won't be 40k lol. But I bought Frostgrave and downloaded Star Breach, Grimdark Future, Age of Fantasy and the variants (firefight, regiments and skirmish). I think this new/old hobby will be fun.

Excellent takes and thoughts all around.
For me, I'm here for the paint. I actually hate assembling models, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. I think the game would be a lot of fun, it's the sort of thing I'm into, but it's just not in the cards for me at the moment. The paint also does rely on the game, and mostly, it's popularity. I want to paint cool detailed models, that's fine. The popularity of the game lets GW make those sorts of models. Without the game, the models don't exist (as evidenced by how small and niche model only products are).
As for the game. It is two hobbies. This concept was introduced to me in WoW. There is the active part of the game, where you've moving little men and shooting lasers or whatever. Then there is the part of the game that takes place outside of the game. The army building, the theorycrafting. The part of the game where you develop massive interlinked spreadsheets to get the most mathematically powerful squad for the options at hand. The part of the game where you develop a computer program to simulate wow combat to find out if +20 str or +20 agi is better for your character based on 1 million simulated fights vs ragnaros.

In my local club we have a wide spectrum of people(i think most clubs do)
We have people who only care about playing and tactics.
On the other end we have people only into speciffic crafts.
And theres people who just come by to talk about the lore and roleplay.
Imo my group is richer by allowing each person to pursue their own hobby. We dont have "only play with painted figs" or "to attend tournament you must participate in tournament" rules.
Our tables are better because we have some railroad guys who just want to build dioramas(terrain).
Our tournaments are more diverse because the tactitians are not forced to buy and paint everything they want to try out.
I myself dont play much but I love building small scale siege equipment from chopsticks, toothpicks and thread.
We have been going for more than 20 years and most of us have drifted to different hobbies over the years. And it just seem strange to one day gang up on a friend and say "because you dont do x you cant be in the club"
And everyone gets to enjoy our strange little hobbies, drink coffee and nerd out.

As has been aluded to I, as an historical gamer, have thought along these lines for many a year. Justification of 'playing with toy soldiers' forced this on the older gamer. There's the craft, history and play as you rightly say but also technical elements. The what ,where when and how of kit, units, hardware, to&e and context is also another stand alone hobby. The chaps I associate with make journey's to battle sites, Waterloo, The Peninsula, Thermopylae, Berlin, the Western Front, the D-day beaches, Falaise, Caen, Rome....and a miriad of museums and galleries. Either singly or in groups we compare notes on topography etc. I do however, when asked say that I play with toy soldiers'. They snort, or smile at my 'infantile' persuit little knowing how vast it's interior really is.

Another possibility; combining the Craft part (building, converting, painting, scenics) with History (learning, reenactment). And then just make diorama’s or/and PLAY with the minifigs!
Just making youre own stories, like we did as a kid with playmobil and toyfigs. No wargaming-rules needed 😎🤠

I think it's fair to say that there are definitely 2 main hobbies within 40k, but I think there are some specialisms within that which people enjoy which could be called separate hobbies.
For example I think terrain building is different enough to be considered a different hobby. It's something that some hobbyists specialise in and some avoid completely.
I think the theory crafting of the play aspect is also significantly different enough from actual playing. In the same way that doing the deckbuilding of MtG is kind of a different hobby to playing MtG.

I'm just into painting the eyes of miniatures. I have a bunch of minis just primed (some times not even) with just their eyes painted. Some times I don't even build them; just head not attached to anything with beautiful eyes. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, so I like to surround myself with small heads with pretty eyes to look at me. I had some attached around my monitor at work, but the manager told me to take them out because it made other people uncomfortable. I don't see what was the problem with it; everybody got some decoration around their desk and I don't tell them what they can or can't put on their desk. If they don't like it, they should just look away.

If it can be broken down to a different activity, it's a separate sub-hobby. If it's merely a different technique within the same activity, that's not a separate "hobby".

    I kind of get 9:37-10:44..
With myself I can kind of see as to how it applies with me and chess not the least because of the learning curve and subculture which comes with chess.. it can be so intimidating the exhausting to get into the theory of chess (not the least because it is a rare case of a board game with some centuries of dense 'theory-crafting') that I barely feel like working through a chest puzzle let alone playing for an entire game; I can barely make a draw or win with computers set at a rating of 1200. Also solely reading through chess theory in Spanish give me a unique venue to keep my non-English understanding adequate in a way which definitely is not always common when it comes to making conversational Spanish with someone else.
    __
I guess that's another example of pouring into or over 'theory and strategy' in a vein analogous to 9:37-10:44 is kind of like how much people can pour over and gush about literary theory and/or philosophy of language but seldom read much prose writing, whether in terms of fiction or nonfiction or even narrative or non-narrative. It's one reason why I feel comfortable working while surrounded by books at a library but not feel too guilty about not always actively reading and I feel privileged for knowing my way around the TH-cam video essay scene (including arguably this channel to some extent) so as to better soak up 'non-fiction' more expediently.

I will buy an army for a period of history after doing research on army and completing several lists so I have variable options of how the army can adapt tactics like they did in real life. I also look for manufacturers that have figs ill enjoy painting and basing then when army's compatible to play with people at the club before I will do an army.

For me the Lore comes first. And most of my list building falls more under lore than play since i build lists to fit with lore and don't care about building effective lists.
Collecting is also a huge part for me too.

I am of the camp: build and paint because that's the fun part. Play... meh I guess I have the models anyway.
I was very into the play portion until I was spanked turn 0 (yes 0) in 40k. I walked away from the dice and the brush for a while after that. The painting itch brought me back mid plague and now I listing to lore videos as I craft. I'm excited for the germs to go away so I can play again but this time it will be narrative.

You are on the same wave length that I'm on.
Little Wars is promoting their own free rule set...the problem is there are 1,000s of free rule sets. That's not the problem. You are dead on as to it being 2 separate hobbies.
If you want to increase miniature wargaming player numbers you need a new product that can be bought and played just by opening the box. It would include plastic pre-painted minis, a playing surface (like a thin fold or roll up mat) thats 2'x2' or 3'x3' and all the items you need to play (dice, measuring devices.etc) along with the rule book full of pictures to help learn the system and thus the hobby. A Viking skirmish box would likely be very popular.
This type of item serves multiple purposes. It brings in fresh blood to the hobby, it gets people over the hump of time and cost investment and it opens the door to those who want to go further into the more traditional side of the hobby.
The hobby has to evolve the same way that board wargaming has evolved. The 'monster' wargames of the past are pretty much a dying breed. They cost to much, need a huge amount of room to play and can take months to complete. The titles that do well now fit on a normal table, have an acceptable price range and can be played often in a few hours.
Adapting to a new generation of potential wargamers in general is a challenge in this day and age but we have to make things that young people can afford and have the time and space to play.

I agree with you that are different hobbies in Wargaming, the crafting, the reading and the playing. But I not agree with the fact that you describes your self as a Wargaming if you only reads lore aka fantasy books, that make you only a reader. If you only do the crafting aspect, build and/or paint, you are a modeler and/or a painter. And only playing games, that is making you only a player. For me the definition of Wargaming is doing all those aspects of the hobby, that is also why wargaming is so complete as a hobby and that in my book, is what is making you a Wargamer! :)

I generally concur here, but I do think "lore" (or "fluff" as it tends to be called in England) is a big part of it beyond the established worlds of GW and the other large franchises. A lot of gamers spend the majority of their hobby time coming up with their own lore for their projects, often more than they do painting or playing. There's a very strong creative writing element to the hobby and it's especially apparent in "loreless" games like Oathmark. It's an error to think of the lore part of thobby as just the stuff produced by the companies as official background.

3:12 I don't understand. Wargaming is traditionally often done with counters. Why can't you play these games with cardboard tokens?
From my perspective it's the craft that's dependent on the game, rather than the converse. That said, I don't wargame, I only paint (well, I have a few tactical solo games-they all work with counters!). But, crucially, I don't care if the miniatures I'm painting came from GW or somewhere else-a good sculpt that speaks to me, at a price I'm willing to pay? I'm up for that. But you notice: that's not ‘the hobby’ at all. I'm not a wargamer, just a mini painter.

  • @gamershed4000

I've been collecting the minis and rulebooks for years but the actual wargaming has been disappointing in the least. Once You get into combat range it's just rollin' rollin' rollin'. But I'm still on a lookout for a good ruleset - 5 parsecs from home seems like the thing - to do more than just roll to resolve conflicts.

Good video! One thing I would like to also dress when you start breaking up hobbies. Is that you will find many times people that just paint or model the craft side of the hobby do so and get praised for their taking part in that hobby. However if you are a gamer and you’re not really inclined to paint your models many times you get criticized. Being told that painting is part of the hobby, And if you’re not going to Paint your models you’re some sort of lower life form.
It’s interesting that they’re such a double standard
