As a kid I slept on the living room couch often. One night sometime after midnight I woke up but couldn't figure out why.
Then a half second after looking around my family dog walked past the living room into the kitchen on its hind legs like a person.
Freaked me the hell out because our dog to my knowledge couldn't walk on two legs.
Then I realized our dog was under the blanket at my feet. Asleep in a ball.
I lost my mind and screamed for my mom. Who came and calmed me down.
It was almost certainly a waking dream, something kids experience often.
But holy hell I hated that "not dog"

@@sarahthesarah2850 what about a moving water stain about three foot wide on your bedroom ceiling.
As a very young kid I would tell my mom the stain moves at night.
Mom thought I was noticing more water damage.
That's not what I was seeing though, it would move while I was watching it in the dark.
It would move a couple inches to entirely new tile. And the parts of the tile it was on would be free of any stain come morning.
I drew a crayon circle around it once to prove to my mother it was Infact moving.
      And it never moved again.
I was definitely just half asleep.
But part of me wants to go back to that old family house and find out if it's still there.

@@FeedMeSalt Drawing circles around things is said to contain them. Shadows are a very interesting topic. There are many biological and spiritual causes attributed to them. I am the friend who people recommend for help with the strange. I like to look into scientific, psychological and spiritual explanations for things. Truth is for the most part we don't know and are all exploring ways to figure it out.
From the fluid motion you described though it sounds like a dream eater, if it was something spirit based. They like to feed off the ambient energy humans produce when dreaming, meditating or imagining. For the most part people don't notice them, they blend in really well. Some sensitive folks are said to see them. They're not usually dangerous but can be unsettling. They can become parasitic in some cases.
There are many things it could have been. I'm sure you've heard the scientific and psyche explanations.
We hallucinate our experience of reality though so the lines of human experience can blur in some interesting ways. Your experience and how it contributes to your life is most important. I've helped people who went on bad trips. It hurts them, even though it was from them.
We often want to know if something is caused by internal or external stimuli. Usually it's a combination of both though. Hope that helps.
Should you encounter more strange and unusual in your life, I pray that it blesses you in the best and most beneficial ways.

@@sarahthesarah2850 thank you sincerely for the response. You gave me a worm hole of topics to fallow.
Some part of me hopes it actually was something real and not just my child neurons pruning and giving me lucid dreams.
The concept or idea of extra planes of life or hidden creatures existing beside most of us we are totally unaware of reminds me of germ theory.
Telling people in our early industrial history about bacteria viruses and microorganisms didn't go over well for a very long time.
I guess my experiences made me curious. Nothing ever made me feel like it wanted to harm me. Even the "not dog" I was totally ignored for the couple seconds I saw it. And the water stain wasn't scary it was just super friggin weird.

Love how some of the rural myths have been gaining relevance as SCPs. The "not deer" has been a myth down here in rural Mississippi for a long time too. But it also borrowed attributes from skin walkers and windiegos.
As a kid I was taught how to hunt and handle guns. Namely, how to be safe with firearms, and how to make clean, ethical kills. We were regaled with stories of people who would let animals suffer, being found barely alive, but fully skinned and some of their guts eaten/removed only to die a short time later from extreme trauma and blood loss.
Legends were of deer that looked just not quite normal, emaciated, almost decomposed, joints int he wrong places, or bending the wrong ways, horns that moved or twisted, extra eyes, no eyes, wrong eyes, wrong teeth, covered in blood, or walked/moved in erratic jerky, or otherworldly manors. Normally after witnessing the beast and acknowledging something was not right, they'd twist their head around in impossible ways to stare dead at the hunter, and standing up on hind legs. Only to either sprout root like tendrils from their bodies, or grow rapidly and their skin shredding as they enraged and enlarged and then chasing down the unethical hunters for their own sick sport. Always though, blood curdling screams and them shouting either just the person's name or "WHY !?" Though oddly some times it was reported that they'd even use the voices of loved ones like wives, daughters, sons, or such.
In some of the tales they even apparently had some control over the minds of their prey, or very nature around them. Making a clear day storm, or turning the normal game trails into endlessly twisting paths of living thorn brambles that shred people as they flee. Tales of roots pinning people in place, or the treetops growing so dense mid day became pitch as night.
When asked what the creatures were, or came from, we were told it was an endless cycle, that unethical hunters would be eaten by the not-deer and their souls would then inhabit the dying game they'd let suffer, and their twisted visage was a reflection of what they'd done. Or that some committed the ultimate sin of hunting man like game and eating his flesh, only to turn into this twisted abomination of predator and prey.

My theory for their divergences from deer behavior is that they’re testing the limits of passable deer behavior. It’s possible they aren’t intelligent, and are simply performing observed behaviors until something doesn’t work. If their disguise fails, they destroy the witness and try again. One day they may become seamless deers.

Wow this is creepy. I lived in southeast Missouri for a few years and one night, the dogs were going nuts outside. Normally I would poke my head out with a flashlight and scan the treeline around my yard. Most of the time it was a raccoon, opossum, and more often, it was an armadillo rooting around. But this time, what I saw I was a deer that was bigger than any I had ever seen, but it walked funny and was making weird noises that had the hair on the back of neck standing on end. I thought it was sick and grabbed my rifle to possibly kill it or just make it go away because I had to be at work at 6 am and just wanted the dogs to calm down. I fired a shot at it and I'm pretty sure I missed, but it ran off and after that, I would hear some strange voices off in the woods. I didn't think much of it until I read a cryptidwiki article on the Not Deer. Maybe it was just an injured and/or sick deer, but it was the strangest thing I had ever seen or heard.

We legitimately get these in the cascades. Not nearly as dramatic as the SCP artical though. You know how maple trees get topped in a storm and, as they get older they form a cradle up to 20 feet up? I've seen a blacktail just standing in one of those cradles like it's any other day, and it wouldn't take it's eyes off of me.
Had one instance where a blacktail started standing up and shifting its shoulders back like a bear would. Never got a good look, I just immediately turned around and noped out that time. We also have something out here the local natives call "deer lady" and my friends decided to F around and find out in her neck of the woods. I think they all became religious that night when something with hooves started circling the tent and left gashes in the tree next to it.
But this artical is pretty well written. For the record, I've never heard of an encounter ending with an attack. That's actually pretty rare with most things you'll run into. You come to realize pretty quick that you're about the scariest thing in that forest as far as everything else is concerned... aside from maybe grizzly bears, they don't care about anything.

Loved this so i thought id share an actual wierd encounter Ive personally had with a deer thingy:
Back in January 2020 at like 3-4am i went downstairs to grab a bottle of water from the fridge. Just before I was about to open the fridge i saw what i thought was a persons head in the window at first (I hadnt turned on any of the indoor lights, it was pitch black inside so I could see out the window barely. All i could see was the silhouette of this thing in front of the dim garage light on the other side of the clearing in the yard). I was fuckin terrified i swear i was about to shit a brick. It moved a little bit and flipped its ears up after a little and i realized it was a deer's head not a humans, which made me feel better. Anyways it eventually turned and walked out of view to the right(my right, its left) of the window.
Now afterwards I assumed it was a normal deer and actually laughed my ass off about it with my buddy once i got back upstairs(we had been up hella late playing videogames). The thing moved funny when it turned to go away but i tried to forget about it, and honestly by the time me and my friend were done playing games i had largely convinced myself it was just a goofy deer. Just kept making fun of myself for shitting bricks over a deer lol.
Anyways, next morning, as soon as the sun was up i went outside and checked, there were in fact tracks there at the window. Wierd thing is, they looked more bipedal than 4 legged, and the tracks were not deer tracks. They looked less like full hooves but moreso either thin wide curved lines, or, the thing that creeped me out, the way that humans know to walk quietly while hunting: Walk on very edge of foot, and go heel to toe to ensure the footstep is as quiet as possible. Maybe im looking too far into it, couldve just had fucked up feet, but that detail of it looking less like normal deer tracks and more like one walking on the edges of its hooves really fucked with me. Anyways, tracks led from outside the kitchen window, right, towards the back of the house, and then went into the treeline right near our little wood shed. Anyways the two last details: the house is built on a slight decline, so the kitchen window is about 10 feet off the ground from the outside, so this had to have been a really big deer. And 2: the way the thing turned when it left also now sticks out to me. Im not good at explaining this but, a 4 legged animal like deer have their heads at the front of their body, while bipedal animals like humans have their heads pretty much centered with the rest of the body. When this thing pivoted to the right, it turned on a point almost perfectly like how a bipedal animal just turns and looks. Ive seen deer on their hind legs before and they always have a very uncertain hunch forwards and they shake a lot while trying to stand like that, this thing just turned like a person thats comfortable standing on two legs.
It freaked the fuck out of me and if im being totally honest I get this really uneasy feeling around deer now. I know it sounds stupid but they just sort of scare me now. I dont have any idea what it is, and trying to put a name to it makes you feel like your some kinda schizo so its easier to just pretend it doesnt exist. I dont have a name to give it so I just say this. There's some wierd shit in the woods sometimes, just make sure to lock your doors, dont go out alone at night, and just try to ignore wierd shit. Biggest lesson Ive learned from this, is to buy some blinds for your windows.

I live in Western Pennsylvania, particularly on the edge of the more heavily wooded areas Northwest of Pittsburgh. My morning commute starts at 4 AM, long before the Sun is up, and I often enjoy seeing deer on the edge of the forest as I near my workplace or when I look into the valley near my home during the day. They're adorable, and I often say, "Hello, deer/dear" as an inside joke to myself
I specifically waited until my morning commute to watch this video. I'm already paranoid about things lurking in the shadows as I step from my door to my car. I break out in a cold sweat leaving my home every morning, thinking I may hear or see something on the edge of the woods.
This video did exactly what I expected it to. I... am not going to enjoy the next few weeks. Very well done!

"Since the capture site was relocated to another continent, no deer have been caught."
They knew that other deer could rescue them using tunnels. Now that this is impossible, they aren't letting themselves be caught anymore.

So, this means they clearly don’t get how the foundation rolls, guess what, there are multiple of you, you’re disposable, if they have it their way, you are knocked out, put in a room, researched, and killed if you do anything *suggesting* you have a plan to escape, this is likely why they stopped trying, the other site, as well as being on another continent, probably has advanced sensors, and this could just suggest that they are in a limited area or avoiding the site altogether.

  • @TheAero1221
    @TheAero1221 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +729

What I think is most interesting about the not-deer in this case is not just that these guys are shapeshifting aliens wearing terrible deer disguises... but moreso *why* the deer disguises are so awful in the first place. For a creature that is used to being able to change its form and appearance at will (and assuming that this is a common characteristic among competing lifeforms in the environment they evolved in), it might not make any biological sense for them to be able to recognize slight differences in 'static' lifeforms. In other words, they might see their deer costume as being 'close enough', but to us, its an obviously incorrect representation.

    • @tamlandipper29

    • @WoobooRidesAgain
      @WoobooRidesAgain 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +70

There are two explanations that immediately spring to mind.
The first is similar to your idea. Namely, the aliens, being amorphous blobs of stuff, do not have much of an understanding of the differences between mammals and so construct the visage of a deer from what is effectively a limited understanding of what a deer is or should be.
The second is that the "costume" is actually not a costume so much as it is the equivalent of an EVA suit. They find a deer, kill it, and proceed to wear it like a skin coat, because deer are not only plentiful, but corpses of such are much easier to get a hold of, or they create a "not deer" suit on the basis of a deer. The "modifications" are done to better suit (no pun intended) their goals - being a creature adapted to placid grass grazing and the occasional bit of predatory behavior doesn't really work if your goal is to capture humans for some nefarious purpose or another. It may be because the aliens aren't quite capable of perfectly replicating a deer, or because they feel they don't _need_ to, and deem perfectly replicating a deer is merely inefficient, "perfect is the enemy of good enough" and what. They only need to get close enough to you to grab you, so anything beyond the basics harms overall mission efficiency.

"Your survival is dependant on your ignorance." it's such a good and creepy line, especially for us the curious ones.
I'm only half way, but enjoying it so much, love the little encounters, almost like an anthology of short horror stories.
Also yeah, a cryptid, but it reminds me of analog horror, with the emergency calls, and found footage of these occurrences.

Your comment freaked me out because I was reading the comments while listening to the video and the sentence "Your survival is..." Came exactly at the same time I was reading your comment

if it makes you feel any better, that was most likely an SCP agent that hijacked the line or was planted at the call center to gather more info

I was born and raised in the city and moved to a rural area and the 1st time a heard legit screaming in the woods I nearly s#+t myself only to have my neighbor laugh in my face the next morning saying "that's just a fox ya doofus"...fox my ass...

Fox screams echoing and distorting due to forest conditions become VERY human like. It's disturbing, but our brains are wired to listen for human speech and sounds of distress. Same with seeing faces in trees or outlet plugs. Our brains assume human, until proven otherwise.

don't forget about bobcats sounding like drunk sorority girls yelling at each other, or peacocks that sound like children wailing 'help'.
a new citypeople neighbor called a whole squad of cops to our 300 population holler cuz of a fox roaming the woods looking for a ladyfriend. Scared everyone half to death. Never seen so many rubberneckers on their lawns before.

Easily my favorite recent SCP. It’s not some inter dimensional threat to existence or some indescribable and uncontainable god with a novel’s worth of lore. It’s simply something we do not fully understand that is right here in front of us. It is both familiar and alien all at once and really plays at the idea that something is simply not right, like being in the dark and thinking you heard something from beyond the light. This is pure horror and I love it

I'm getting pretty sick of all the "big scary thing that blows up the world if too many people think about it/know it exists at the same time" SCPs that were flooding the site for so long.
I don't know what the admins were thinking letting so many samey stories through, while rejecting so many actually interesting and well-written ones. Here's hoping we get to see more like this.

@@zerrodefexthe writing quality tends to be higher but the actual content can be more homogeneous. Most of my all time favourites are medium sized and localized and I can’t think of any of the big ones I actually like overmuch. My faves that come to mind are Red Sea object, lamplight, and bodies in the water
