ah mate well funny and actually informative, funniest video on camping stoves on the tube.
Great vid & very informative. A tip for the survival stove - put clean sand in to stabilise and act as a wick so giving a more even burn{less plumes at the sides}
Never thought I could be entertained for 30+ mins by a video on camping stoves, but this is both comical and informative. Loved it!

Great review, BTW the Australian Army use the hexi stoves, they are the business. Grab a can of beans (or whatever) put a dent in the side, place on the stove. When the can pops back into shape its heated & ready to open.

The advantage of the 🔥 box is charcoal and a good ole 🇺🇸 cheeseburger. 😃 You didn't say put some shrimp on the barby or a dingo ate my 👶. Great job!

Would you consider taking MREs (Self heating millitary rations) on long trips instead of cooking equipment plus all the food? They are only around $10 each.

Had a bit of an incident at a lookout, due to the gas container not being fully connected. If it wasn't for a meditating hippy who just "happened" to have a fire blanket...well, we would have been on the news.. Double check the connection!! Like you say, you get what you pay for. I've got a Trangia mini. I sold my MSR Universal because it irritated me. It reminded me of all the stuff I was trying to get away from. But I also just have a small Eagle kettle I can hang from a stick over a fire. That's the best way, build a fire.

OK so I tested it the same as I did in the video and after 52 mins I gave up. I then retried using the metal cross bars and it worked better but are 20 mins of just simmering I put a lid on it and it then boiled 1 min later. I did the whole thing again using the cross bars and a lid and it boiled in 10 mins. Cheers... Mark
Biker Bits Thanks Mark! Very comprehensive of you, although Im sure you wanted to know anyway. Not the best "camping stove", maybe not "magic" but did the job eventually.
I have 8oooooo stoves but I always use the JETBOIL for convenience I also have the trangia WHICH is brilliant BUT
with the jetfoil you get 12boils out of a gas canister GREAT VID I REALLY ENJOYED IT KIND REGARDS PHIL

You only need 1 tablet at a time for boiling water lol.
Maybe 2 at the most but just put 1 in the middle , so you don't waste them .👍
A thoroughly entertaining, as well as educational video Mate. So I've got a request. Now that we've seen all of these gadgets for heating water/food, how about sharing some recipes and/or tips on how and what to carry as far as nourishment is concerned, besides a cup o' Joe.

I'm just thinking, surely you don't pack a burner just for coffee, but maybe you do. If not, show us what your cooking, how your packing it, etc.

If it isn't super wet out, three pine cones will make a cup of coffee.
Penny stove and little plastic bottle of Heet or pure alcohol packs the smallest and will make coffee with an aluminum foil heat shield. (Cost 1 penny and the easy to carry and obtain fuel)
As you show that hexane stove is small but will start a fire underneath it. You must sit that on a big rock or clean damp gravel.
The butane stoves are butane stoves. Bulky but convenient and safe, especially the big one. The little ones are tippy.
The gasoline in a coke can is a tip incident waiting to happen. It falls, and the petrol spills in a flaming line. That one is better as making a penny stove, since it won't spill easily.
Oh the gasoline doesn't explode because the octane is above 80%. Old movies loved to show exploding gasoline. Pre 1950 lots of countries used heptane gasoline. 40octane means 60% heptane or pentane. Very low flash point. Very dangerous. Knocks badly in modern motors.
The firebox is best for heat. If you tarp camp you can put that in the mouth of your bushcraft tied plow front lean to. Being super airy the sticks burn too quickly to be convenient for cooking, but heat is good and safer than an unbounded unringed campfire. The best small woodstove for cooking or inside a canvas tent or tarp is a larger ammo can cut for the purpose. Nylon tenting means best fire is no fire.

I watched your video yesterday of cheap camping on surplus your Honda 110 Postie bike... Exploring the quarry shack recently used by the Toecutter Gang.
As a man living in the Southern Appalachians I had to say, brother from another mother. I ride into the mountains on a 233 old Honda tricked out for camping, and I would have done everything you did, except sleep in a dome tent, but I'm a out by the fire camper under a tarp if wet or cold. I live inside a national forest, so fun and beauty is never far away. As long as I don't find the Deliverance family as my "Toecutter" North Georgia equivalent .
Used the Hexamine stove whilst in the Army between 1967 to 1969. The fuel tablets were nearly as big as a matchbox, and used one at a time. Very effective little cooker.

Hey Mark, been toying with the idea of getting a postie bike for some long distance adventures when I came across your vids. Love em, well produced mate. In my recent research, that "Magic Can" stove thing (with the wick), i think it's a variation on "Sterno", a.k.a "Canned Heat". (Wiki link for those interested: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sterno ) and it looks like (based on the picture on the box) that you may have had it setup incorrectly, accidentally obstructing the holes and starving it of oxygen. It would be interesting to see how it goes otherwise.
I've had some experience with one of those Hexamine stoves and one thing I will add for your viewers is that those things REALLY don't like lighting in the wind (Unless you happen to have the boot of a Gemini handy). Oh, and they stink cause the Hexamine breaks down into Hydrogen Cyanide, Formaldehyde and others (of course, if you smoke cigarettes like me, this is kinda a non-issue ;) ) 4 tablets broken up can heat one of those Harvest-brand canned meals but you DO have to cover the food.
Anyway, just my two cents, keep up the entertaining and informative videos mate!

I'm partial to what you call the Primus kind (mine's an MSR) myself, because even before I bought the stove, I'd bought the fuel bottles for them for reserve petrol, since they're sturdy and properly marked for fuel carrying, so no worries on that score. Only holds about 30 ounces (almost a litre), but in case I have to dump that in the tank, that's good for about 11 miles/17 km. Now that I have the multifuel stove, I can just carry that one bottle around to fill both needs. Of course, if I use the stove considerably, then I have that much less petrol to get me to a pump. Trade-offs. But yeah, the multi-fuel ones are pretty expensive. I do backpacking, too, so it was worth it for me. Cheers!

In my years in the army most people use it the same way up as in this video. Have seen it used the other way but it doesn't work as well. Try 1 tablet at a time. Can break the tablet into halves/pieces if necessary.
@@RAL1966 yes when I was out bush we would put the sharp edges in the dirt and you could fit 2 cup canteens fit easy on the flat part .

I wonder how much the Hexamine tablets cost ,would it be efficient to drop 1 or 2 into the wood burning stove once in a while during use , to me running out of fuel might be a deal breaker, since I can stay a week or two in the wilderness,and with an abundance of wood free laying ,the wood stove might be my choice .Awesome vid bud stay safe .

I think for myself, with motorcycle camping in OHIO in the U.S., I'd rather go with the wood burner, because of the woods all around me. 2nd, I'd go with the beverage can, but I'd have to carry a bottle of kerosene in my sidebag. The other pre-packaged fuel containers don't make sense if your away from stores and don't know who sells those containers of fuel for that particular stove.

I know this was done awhile ago but a pro tip on hexamine stoves if you get the square hexamine tablets and break them in half they burn at a hotter temperature then the tablet being whole. I have used hexamine stove when I went camping and they are a great stove to use
the summery at the end about trangia an MSR stoves was priceless....:)

That was fun, and a bit scary! I like that little wood burning box. Very compact, and a good backup should you run out of fuel for your gas stove.

Good Video mark, I used those Hexamine stoves when I was in the Army but back then the Tablets were rectangular and we used to put half of one in the middle, when you lit it I thought to myself, God I hope that's not a melamine board on the bottom that he wants to keep as it's gunna burn through and ruin it, RSMF.

once again, another great video, Mark. Glad to see that firebox back in action. I watched your review of it when you 1st got it. I've been wondering if you ever use it. (I agree though, the downfall would be constantly feeding it. Who wants to do that?) Now, the one you use all the time and sell, does it come with the orange storage container? And do you also sell the adapter, and if so, does it come with a storage container as well?
Anyway, great video! I always look forward to your installments. (with the damage that one folding stove did to your board, imagine the dangers it would pose on the ground in the wild. *yikes*)
G'day Charles, thanks mate! I have taken the firebox on a couple of trips but never ended up using it, only because at time it was easier and cleaner to use the gas one. I've used it plenty of times in the back yard just mucking around :-) I sell both the stove and the adapter, the stove comes with the orange box and the adapter has nothing. I would think you could find them in the states! Cheers... Mark

Cool vid mark. Pfffft Trangia! I made a double walled alcohol stove from a aluminium bottle, it boils 2 cups of water with 1 ounce of metho in 4mins 20seconds, the $38 Trangia to do the same took 8 minutes, not to mention the diy stove weight barely registers and the Trangia is heavy as shit!

Another great video Mark as always. Funny thing was I actually just bought myself a Trangia (see www.anaconda.com.au/Product/Camping-Gear/252-aluminium-kettle#90002588) just the other day for my motorbike camping trip in Dargo next week. I also bought, as an alternative measure, a genuine Trangia gas burner for it so I have the choice of both. Planning to film a review on it. I too have taken the same cooktop (the black one) on many camping trips and has been fantastic each time and for something as cheap as it is it is also very hardy.
