My brothers Platoon Leader on this deployment. My brother was on that mountain top on June 10th. I'd talked to him many times about what was going on over there during this deployment. Due to opsec, he was vague. I read the book when it came out and realized just how close I came to losing my brother, and I balled like a baby. I served. One tour in Iraq as well. How I wished we had leaders like Sean Parnell. If I could meet him, I'm not sure I'd let him go after hugging him. Did his job, lost some men, but brought most of them back. Thank you, Jocko, for this. From the bottom of my heart

I had eye surgery and had to be facedown for two weeks. Only able to get up for 10 minutes out of each hour. I spent the rest listening to about 20 podcasts from Jocko. This is what kept me going and it fed me everything I needed to remain humble and to still continue the mindset of a winner.

I am retired 82nd airborne division I listen to your podcast every day all day at work it’ flooded me with memories and moments that overwhelm me at times , some good and some not so good , but I am alive thank you for what you do thank you for keeping me alive in my memories... AA...
Other vets are glad you made it!!! A large number of Americans who served saw no, none, zero combat, but are worthy of the admiration and respect afforded their combat brothers and sisters. It takes many people to support one combat soldier, and those vets deserve an atta-boy too. Everything relating to their job task, says they were there too!!! Great job men and ladies!

Dear Jocko , Charles and Sean,,, I cried, laughed and was amazed through this podcast,,, I provided Dick Thompson, The Frenchman , and other SF Vietnam Veterans with oak firewood on the central coast,,, my Dad was a (volunteer) 199th light infantry 2 years on Cambodian border, wounded badly but carried on ,, when I was young and acting up Dad would say Your Cruzing for a Bruising,, Thank You and God Bless You All...

Lance Ward def a good one. But i still am not sure if it can top all of the sog podcasts. However i guess you can group all of john stryker meyer’s podcasts together. Episodes 180-181-182 and 186 and consider them one podcast. And do the same with dick thompsons sog stories episodes 204-205-and 206 group them into one podcast and then this is most definitely a top 5.

I’ve listened to this 5+ hour podcast twice and it’s enthralling! Jocko and Sean Parnell put you into the world of war. I’ve never served or been to war. I’ve seen a lot of movies and revere and admire many of our veterans. This podcast drops you into this world better than any other I’ve listened to. This makes me want to do something, anything I can for our American Veterans. You will understand the meddle of our American Warriors after hearing this.

I’m an old Vet and listening to this all the years after reading Sean’s book has been so Good for me and, my Wife has started to Really Listen With Real Interest to this, Shawn Ryan and Andy Stumph’s show’s as well in an effort to “get” why I and the Select Few Brother Vets I spend time with are the way we are, partake of and live Life. Thank you Sean Parnell for the Book, this Podcast, and for being a Great PL for Your Troops, OUTLAW PLATOON. You embody and exemplify what an Infantry Platoon Leader is and should be. Drive On.
Jocko...you should be a professor of Military History at the Naval Academy; or at least a visiting guest lecturer. I know you have your consulting business and authoring books....but the Naval Academy would certainly benefit from your experience, wisdom, and unique teaching style. You do a fantastic job...keep it up!

I agree, he should be. Another suggestion, I`ve heard and I know that some people will automatically balk at it and dismiss it as nonsense and even as selling out but I`ve heard some people suggest that Jocko do voice-over work or consider going into acting.
Just to be clear, I like what Jocko is doing right now with his consulting business, the podcast and writing books and I don`t think he needs to do anything of the sort as it relates to acting but it`s not like it`s such a crazy and far-out suggestion considering how there are MANY different military veterans who have gone on to have careers in acting or voice-over work. Rudy Reyes(who would make a great guest for the Jocko podcast) played himself in the HBO Mini-Series Generation Kill, based on the book of the same name and Kevin Lacsz, who served in Task Unit Bruiser with Jocko, played himself in Clint Eastwood`s film on Chris Kyle, American Sniper. And honestly, if Randy Couture(as much as I like Randy Couture), who is also a veteran, can act in a movie, then, yes, Jocko could do it, too but again, I don`t think it`s something he needs to do but yeah, he definitely has a voice that would work for voice-overs.

This is one of the best combat books I've ever read. I read it shortly after it came out and it's stood the test of time as one of the best around!
Read the Outlaw Platoon book, and it was absolutely incredible. Didnt realize he did a podcast with Jocko. This will be an amazing 5 hours i can guarantee it. This man and his boys went through hell and back. Thanks for your service Sean.

I admit, this is the first podcast I've ever listened to front to back. I don't usually have time to complete one. I made time and I sat and watched/listened to this podcast for 5 hours, 24 minutes and 15 seconds today. Outstanding conversation that felt far less than 5+ hours.
I listen in the car daily. It’s the best time for me to get it in.
These podcast give me so much perspective on my life and how lucky my family really was to be born and live in this great nation. I NEVER complain or feel sorry for myself after hearing these amazing stories. I teach my kids the same.

Words do not sufficiently articulate how enjoyable it was to listen to this podcast. Out of 192 this falls into my top 10. An unbelievable story with so many lessons. I read the book years ago but hearing it from Sean added so much more. I’ve listen to it twice so far.
Jocko’s intros are legendary. The man is brilliant.
I had a similar experience as 03:34:30 While in Iraq in 2003. I had to go to Al Jabar Kuwait for a day. The AF 2nd Lt in the Chow Hall or "Dining Facility" didn't want to let us Marines in with our weapons. He finally got over it. There were AF chicks running with little shorts on, They had Ice Cream in the chow hall, and fresh fruit, cold drinks, etc..We loaded our packs and pockets with fruit and other junk food.. We found a Hygiene trailer and basically took baths in the sinks.. We left that thing with a mud pile on the floor. Lol.. We were all almost sick and a bit pissed that they had it so nice. They had no idea.
They discriminated against AF folks too. As a USAF Civil Engineer on ARMY in-lieu of orders, we followed Army rules on weapons handling. We was sent packing, not allowed to eat. This look of confused horror on their face.
Well, after a year in Vietnam as a USAF pilot protecting and saving Army and Marines in an AC-47, and another year in Thailand in B-52’s flying against N Vietnamese SAM’s, I’d like to say that these comments don’t represent the AF as I knew it. We all deserve better now, so let it go.
Its crazy hearing this. I was on the Marine ETT co located with these guys. Hill 2474 , Shkin, oh man this brings it all back!!! Also.....it was an honor helping you guys that day. I would love for you to hear our side and optics to this!!! It was a "Blackhawk down" moment for sure. Ill never forget this deployment and that day. 3rd Group dudes ( Msgt Lathem ) was the bomb. That 7th group team was ass. I enjoyed doing war with you guys.....SEMPER Fi!!!!
This Podcast has become my #1, so far, of all that I have listened to.. And I have an office job so I listen every day all day.. Jocko with Dakota was my fav.... This was better than reading Sean's book.. which I read a few years ago.. great book I might ADD !

I’m binge listening to warrior stories as my youngest just finished Airborne and is getting prepped next for Selection. 18D. I’m seeking an inside look into the psychology of a warrior so that I can be there for him as much as possible. I know each of us has a calling within to find and he found his just as I found mine.
“Big ears and big eyes” is a great way to say one of the core leadership points made.
I’m deeply indebted to all the warriors and first responders that keep us safe. This son and my other are FF/Paramedics, aka human angels as I call them.

The dialogue at times, brought tears to my eyes. This talk is one of the best, and so much better than the usual political banter and civilian bullshit.

I learned about Sean from this podcast 3 years ago. Remembered it and rewatched today, after reading a post on one of his socials. Great story, and especially impressed with Jocko's conduct of the interview. He leaves enough space, lets his guest speak their mind, and gives great support and encouragement when Sean talks about things he wished had gone differently. Thanks to both.
I am not a stoic man by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it’s safe to say that I have little control over my emotions, and they often get in my way when I need to make difficult decisions.
I am someone that can be described as morbidly curious. I am not a veteran, although I wish I could say that about myself. That is a long and personal story for another time.
I have listened to dozens of these podcasts now, finding myself deeply imbedded into the stories and lives of some of the greatest human beings that I have the privilege of sharing existence with. Jocko is no stranger to evil, neither is his podcast, and as I continue to familiarize myself with the warriors’ mindsets, I find in some vicarious way that I too am not a stranger to evil. Because of that, there may be a part of me that has developed a callous to hearing these real tales of horror, camaraderie, and sacrifice.
For some reason this one in particular was really difficult to listen to without shedding tears. All I have to say is thank you Mr. Parnell for immortalizing the valor of your comrades, and thank you Jocko for giving the public the chance to understand. You always find a way to humble me.
3:07:58 - absolutely agree. I've called myself a 'culturalist' for about 15 years now. I believe in the good cultures of the USA (and the world), and am against the bad cultures within it. Race doesn't come into it - either one is both productive in society, and good to their fellow man, or one doesn't belong among those of us living here.

Not all cultures or belief systems are created equal. You're absolutely right that race doesn't enter the conversation. Culture and lifestyle are what matter not color of skin. I wish the modern left and snowflake groups could understand this. You should be judged as MLKJr said, by the content of your character.

I was enraptured during this whole podcast. It started it off with a literal bang, describing the horrific first day and the death of the little girl. But, I lost it when Jocko and Sean started talking about the abuse the little 6-year old boy endured. My boss heard the sniffles I was trying to hide, this not being the first time he's caught me in tears listening to this podcast. He threatened to ban me from listening to it, but I believe the look I gave him ...he will NEVER make that suggestion again.
Another great podcast, Jocko. It was so long, it left NO time to listen to anyone else today. (Hmmm ...might be a good strategy to monopolize because this is my first choice.)
Ditto. 6-year old boy story will NOT leave my head. These are sick animals that need to be put down.
I just finished listening to this lengthy podcast. God bless you Jocko for bringing these truly amazing American warrior stories to the Forefront.As a 55 year old former member of the National Guard and Army Reserve, I have total respect for the warrior class, and those who have actually seen combat. Again, thank you for all that you do in bringing forth the stories of the American combat hero. Our culture needs this reality brought forth now more than ever. I have every intention of buying this book. In closing I must say, Sean Parnell and Outlaw Platoon where and I are an amazing group of American Heroes.

This podcast has a similar feel to when Dakota Meyer was on. Two of the best podcasts you've done. I love the in depth look and honesty of deployments.
Patrick Johnson you need to check out the podcasts he has done with guests from vietnam who served in sog. Episodes 180,181,182, and 186 with john stryker meyer. As well as 204,205, and 206 with dick Thompson. If you have not listened to them already that is. Some of the most intense stories from combat you could ever dream up let alone know that they are actually real.

I've listened to every Jocko podcast.I think this might be my favorite one. Gotta get this book. My brothers served in the same area in the 10th mountain and 173rd. I wanted to tell them about this podcast. However after hearing the first story I knew better. Much respect Sir!
The Vietnam Sog stories are prolly the best in my opinion they had waaaaay less high tech shit and it was insane some of the stories.... like the guy jumping from the rope into the top of a tree that was 150 feet tall just to grab a branch after he got thru the canopy was nuts to rescue people that were down with almost no rounds cuz he wasnt supposed to be on the birdie when it left he had 2 days of r and r and didnt get shit

I can count on one hand how many books I’ve actually finished. This one consumed me. He captured the emotion of battle, frustration of deployment politics, and the connection between the dudes down range that can only thrive then and there. Books like this make me wish I wasn’t such a knuckle-dragger and could force myself to read more. There’s so many books with similar stories out there. This book has given me a drive to start reading those other books.
Sean Parnell - so articulate! Was good to hear that you want people to know the story of your men's experiences in Afghanistan as sometimes I feel uneasy or guilty about finding war stories so captivating. Mind blown as to how you or anyone survived the environment and continue to fully participate and contribute in this lifetime. Getting book ASAP!!

Read this book while deployed to COP Bermel/Boris Afg, my 1SG served with him (“SFC Burley”) there and then few years later deployed with us to the exact same COP and would tell us so many memories of that terrible tour.

Which others would would you recommend?
Matt about face by colonel David hackworth is one of the best military books I’ve ever read. WW2, Korea and Vietnam veteran.

The Last Punisher is an amazing book by Kevin Lacz. He was part of Task Unit Bruiser under Jocko's command and is an excellent writer!!

I'm new to this podcast. Listened to about 20 so far. I couldn't stop listening to this one. I will make sure both my college age kids listen to this. This podcast is an amazing gift - everyone should spend the time to listen to understand what our warriors go through. Buying the book tonight - giving this 6 out of 5 stars - just incredible.
I’m joining the military soon. Honestly only got to wait for my system to clear so I can go see the doctor and swear in. Everything else is done. Wasn’t sure what I wanted to do but I knew I’m not gonna be a pencil pusher or behind a computer. I didn’t think I wanted to be a warrior. This instilled passion and motivation in me unlike any other moments, hours, or day of my life. I’m outside of my recruiting station and I’m about to go tell him I don’t wanna do what I was gonna do anymore. I’m gonna be a warrior. Thank you sir for you sacrifice and your service. I’m literally itching to leave now and can’t wait to go become who in my mind I want to be and know I can be. We need more men like this and we also need more men to realize what they can become and achieve. I’m scared, but the fear only makes me wanna do it more and prove myself wrong. Everyone. Ima go inside and get this done then finish my process as soon as I can. God willing I will be shipped off in a months time. Thank you all who’ve served and sacrificed your own freedom for everyone else’s. I don’t want any glory or self worth, I want to be part of something important and bigger than myself. I served with Sabo in 2001 in Bosnia days after 9/11, and in Aghanistan in 03, 04!,, Aco 3rd Plt 2/22 , 10th MNT. Crazy hearing his name on this podcast. Dude had a pentagram on his neck!! He was a good dude.

I tried, but I don’t have words for some of the stories in this and the other pod cast. Thanks for sharing your experiences. They’re very heartbreaking, and very humbling.
As someone who has never been in the military I'll say this is the best shit I've ever heard and I know nothing about military strategy. I know feeling and a riveting story when I hear one. These podcasts are amazing and should be mandatory for every American. Maybe then vets will get what they deserve in return finally. They think they know but they have no idea what you guys do myself included. Now I do! Truly amazing and from the bottom of my heart, thank you!
This was one of the best podcasts you’ve ever done, the five hours went by fast, really enjoyed it. Tried to by “Outlaw Platoon” but it’s sold out.

Don't feel bad Sean. It breaks my heart how he feels so guilty and like he is burdening someone he trusts with what happened. He needed to talk to someone and regardless of what he said not talking about it is a heavy weight to carry alone. Veterans die over these things because it is truly what might eat them alive. Yeah youre a bad ass and can survive the crazy stuff, you also had the courage to decompress. Do not shame yourself from something that is more lethal to a bad ass than a war zone and takes far more courage than most will admit. I'm not saying that you need to reveal classified stuff but the fear and the lonliness and nobody to have someone to trust as a sounding board is not healthy.

Such a great back-and-forth conversation between two combat-hardened leaders who think on the same frequency. Very rare sneak peak into the thought-processes of warriors who lead other warriors.
Not finished this yet but I love this guy ... He almost tells some parts like he's recalling a crazy stag do!!! He's a total legend and hero!!! His honesty and bravery is overwhelming. And Jocko appreciating the british office for its sadness or darkness, epic. I have never or will never have the minerals to do what these men have done. But i thank them deeply for their service and outlooks. And irrespective if you (like myself) are sitting back in bewildered awe at these guys, there are so many transferable lessons here to be learnt in every walk of life. Bless!!!

Damn it Jocko, you got me on this one. I sat and listened to the whole thing. For got to pick up the dog,shopping didn't happen either. My whole family is brow beating me......I had to make dinner,do the dishes,clean the kitchen.........It was worth it.

I watched the documentary on this back when NRA.TV had their website and videos. Awesome you got him on. Real American Hero's.
I appreciate Jocko's service and Sean's service in bringing these events to be made known. We can't possibly repay the debts of those who gave their lives. I hope we can honor their sacrifice by building a country worthy of it.
Wow this may be my favorite podcast so far. The back and forth between the two was great. You were pretty much finishing each other’s sentences at certain points. I read his book years ago and it was great to hear him go into deeper detail. Thanks a lot , time well spent.
