i spent many a night in a darkened room absorbed in this game, round and round and round, oh yeah, i love you, ozric tentacle. Jeff Minter pure genius!
Damn this shareware game takes me back, one of the best shooters on the amiga period. Sweet solid controls, excellent response on one button joysticks, wicked arcade experience, and hard as balls. I beat the whole damn game one saturday morning while back around 93' I believe.
Thanks for showing all of the message at the start--what an incredible time capsule! And the fact that Yak could already see in 1991 that game development was getting too corporate and focus tested (for the hypothetical 14 year old called Darren), wow! Things haven't changed much since then!
I got the iOS remake of this game for my iPod called Minotron 2112 - it's virtually the same as this version, but you control a minotaur (that's Minter's new favorite beast, apparently). You hear "EXCELLENT!" from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure when you rescue the last Beastie, but my favorite sound effect is the "Wilhelm Scream" when you shoot these colored arrows!
I remember just playing this game for the SFX. Some of the boss levels were hilarious too. There were also a few easter-eggs to be entered in the high-scores list too. At least one was easy to find without trying too hard.
An Inspiral Carpets song! Thanks, that is cool. Jeff Minter is a fan of theirs, I think. Along with being a fan of The Ozric Tentacles, of course!@@PWEIcom
I remember that if you hit Pause JUST as you died on the ST one it would play the sample in full instead of cutting off at "Ohhh!". Similar with the Mandyboss, if you weren't able to kill it and wanted to hear the scream in full without anything interrupting.
Today I beat the game for the second time after yesterday. And I did it from level 1 on, without save states just like yesterday (and with the droid as helpful cpu partner). I'm surprised about myself. Today I didn't even have to use a continue to get through. The last boss the Ozric Tentacle (a reference on the psychedelic rock band Ozric Tentacles who by the way are one of my 3 all-time favourite bands) was easy, only the 4 space ships that attack horizontally and vertically were annoying so it was best to destroy them first. The boss shoots slowly moving homing missiles which you can destroy and sometimes there's even an extra life item coming out of them. I hope Jeff Minter can read this, I'm playing this game and the other shareware game (Revenge of the mutant camels) very often nowadays, with the WinUAE emulator. I wish I had known both games back then in 1994 when we had an amiga 500. I just love those colourful amiga graphics. Both games belong to 16 others I play very often even if I memorize everything all those games never get boring or old.
I remember beating in the Atari ST version. It loops, but faster, and there's a level that's almost impossible the second time around (and would be definitely impossible the third).
This game is mental. Never before or since has a game been so insane. I recently played it for the first time in many years and recorded the result with my live audio commentary. It's on my channel if anyone is interested in my rather amateurish performance and hopefully entertaining comments.

I lost the plot when the mandlebrot set started chasing him, in an intergalactic field of strobing hamburgers.

This game was the greatest thing that ever occurred in my life.
The brain enemies were rather terrifying though.

You are missing out of dozens of extra lives... collect all the beasties in a level!

those sound effects freak the hell out of me
Remember playing this on the Atari ST as a kid, loved every minute of it. Looking at the game play again, I'm stunned I didn't have an epileptic fit.
I'm surprised the flashing effects didn't cause the same for me neither.
Ah, the brilliant Llamatron wrote by a man constructed almost entirely of hash, acid and a pair of wellies.
I'm glad I read that readme, revenge of the mutant camels. I knew I didn't dream that game up.
Played this with an Amiga 1200 and a CRT tonight. Flashes, lots of bright flashes, and lots of fun! Recommendation! ;)

What was it please?

Playing this Game in a Dark Room is very Cool ^^
Remake available on the Nintendo Switch March 2024! As part of llamasoft Jeff minter story?
I've seen video of the PS5 version. Doesnt look like a remake but uses the Atari ST version.
What is that glowing screaming thing supposed to be???

Yeah sorry didn't mean remake, still looks good to bring back a few memories tho😊
Amiga - 'Revenge of the Mutant Camels'. A spiritual successor?
Anyone ever have kids cube?

How many waves were there? I got well past 100 on the Amiga.

I wish someone would re-compile this game to run under XP/7/8 with sound without having to use a DOS emulator
I played the living hell out of that game.
Top, top game
hehe, that was unlocked at around 6.35 on the highscore table ;)
minter needs to 3d this up
BOOM!

4:35 Yello - Oh Yeah
4:19 Yello - I Love You
LOL Coke cans!
The long intro was unnecessary
