Bro... HANDS DOWN, best subnetting tut out on the web. Some tutorials are overly complicated methods, some try simplistic approach that I feel doesn't cover all the bases. This cheat sheet has helped me to get a grip on how to answer subnetting questions. My problem is that I'm taking my CompTIA Net+ tomorrow online and not allowed to use scraps of paper.... they want you to use a virtual whiteboard function PearsonVue exam application and is kind wack for writing things down but w.e, first thing Ill do is create my cheat sheet.... thank you so much!
Erick that's awesome! Glad to hear you're getting your head around Subnetting questions. Yes, most certification exams don't allow bringing notes. But they do provide a way for you to quickly jot down notes. That's the benefit of this cheat sheet is how easy it is to quickly jot down the three lines at the beginning of your exam.

@@PracticalNetworking Can confirm...Currently in training for a job and the school side did explain the concept I somehow could use it in docker but never really solve it that fast. I solved all 4 problems probably within 5 or 6min. My personal problem was to calculated the subnet of the before and after and the BC-adress. You just made my evening with these steps

Can confirm after several videos, this was the easiest for me to understand. I' am also currently in a CISCO course and found this video easier to understand than the QA teacher :D My company is paying for the course but 2.5k is joke when I can get the info in videos lol
Hi. I feel like you could have precised that so far, we're only able to solve ip subnets from /25 to /32. If I were to go on the website rn for more practice, I wouldn't be able to solve a subnet with /20 for example. That's a little confusing but great job still.

@@PracticalNetworking Yes, it will be much helpful for students! Supernetting and subnetting go hand-in-hand in the university curriculum. WRT VLSM, it is sort of a pre-requisite/assumed knowledge when we study network design, making it really important. Also, isn't VLSM just so interesting? :D
Did you use the problem generator? Did you solve all seven attributes? Reply to this comment with the IP address, Subnet Mask, and seven attributes you resolved.
Correct me if I'm wrong because I'm new to subnetting and you have much more experience than me, but I think when it comes to determining the number of subnets and hosts, I think this chart may be flawed. Maybe I'm overthinking it, but here's my thought process: the number of subnets = 2^x, where x = the number of host bits turned on (the number of ones) the number of hosts = 2^x - 2, where x = the number of host bits turned off (the number of zeros) The example at 3:53 is a class A IP Address, which means the first octet is for the network, and the last 3 octets are for the hosts. So the number of host bits in total are 24. Of those 24 host bits, 17 host bits are turned on (they are 1s), so 2^17 = 131,072 subnets. (I'm assuming your "# of IP addresses" is the number of subnets). That means 7 of those host bits are turned off (they are 0s), so 2^7 - 2 = 126 hosts (usable addresses). So I guess the hosts (usable addresses) part is fine, but I'm concerned about the part about the subnets. Don't get me wrong, bless you for making this cheat sheet because it's so simple to understand and I love it, but I don't know if I just confused myself more about how to figure out the subnets. Could you please clear this up for me?
Hi Jose. You're referring to networks and subnets from a "Classful" perspectives ... but Class A/B/C networks have been deprecated for nearly 30 years. Problem with subnetting is practice. Tedious problems like subnetting ones require thousands of problems done before you actually learn them. They are so quickly forgettable.
@@PracticalNetworking I had so many negative experiences with math and CS that I developed antibodies for it. But ... have to learn it. It took me a year and three months to learn subnetting and I still don't know it. And it is just incredibly annoying. Subnetting, that is. But people gotta do crazy things to survive in capitalism.
@@anasmanjothi It's on my list. But my background is Network Engineering. So it will be a while before I can understand Software engineering enough to teach it. I've started to learn developing though and am enjoying it.

@@PracticalNetworking Can confirm...Currently in training for a job and the school side did explain the concept I somehow could use it in docker but never really solve it that fast.
I solved all 4 problems probably within 5 or 6min. My personal problem was to calculated the subnet of the before and after and the BC-adress.

Hi. I feel like you could have precised that so far, we're only able to solve ip subnets from /25 to /32. If I were to go on the website rn for more practice, I wouldn't be able to solve a subnet with /20 for example. That's a little confusing but great job still.
This is part 4 of 7 in a series or videos. Video 1-5 will teach you to master Subnetting /25-/32, and videos 6&7 will teach you /1-/24. =)

WRT VLSM, it is sort of a pre-requisite/assumed knowledge when we study network design, making it really important. Also, isn't VLSM just so interesting? :D

Correct me if I'm wrong because I'm new to subnetting and you have much more experience than me, but I think when it comes to determining the number of subnets and hosts, I think this chart may be flawed. Maybe I'm overthinking it, but here's my thought process:
the number of subnets = 2^x, where x = the number of host bits turned on (the number of ones)
the number of hosts = 2^x - 2, where x = the number of host bits turned off (the number of zeros)
The example at 3:53 is a class A IP Address, which means the first octet is for the network, and the last 3 octets are for the hosts.
So the number of host bits in total are 24.
Of those 24 host bits, 17 host bits are turned on (they are 1s), so 2^17 = 131,072 subnets. (I'm assuming your "# of IP addresses" is the number of subnets).
That means 7 of those host bits are turned off (they are 0s), so 2^7 - 2 = 126 hosts (usable addresses).
So I guess the hosts (usable addresses) part is fine, but I'm concerned about the part about the subnets.
Don't get me wrong, bless you for making this cheat sheet because it's so simple to understand and I love it, but I don't know if I just confused myself more about how to figure out the subnets. Could you please clear this up for me?
Hi Jose. You're referring to networks and subnets from a "Classful" perspectives ... but Class A/B/C networks have been deprecated for nearly 30 years. I wrote about Classful vs CIDR in this article, I think it will help you understand:

Problem with subnetting is practice. Tedious problems like subnetting ones require thousands of problems done before you actually learn them. They are so quickly forgettable.
Certainly, practice is absolutely required. That's why SubnetIPv4.com exists. But practice without a solid teaching base doesn't lend to mastery.
@@PracticalNetworking I had so many negative experiences with math and CS that I developed antibodies for it. But ... have to learn it. It took me a year and three months to learn subnetting and I still don't know it. And it is just incredibly annoying. Subnetting, that is. But people gotta do crazy things to survive in capitalism.
