A great tool for removing nails is a long set of "nippers". These are flush front diagonal clippers. I have a pair about 14" long. You grab the nail near the wood and then leaver the nail out. Farriers use these to remove horseshoe nails form horses hooves. Try a pair, you will like them.
Dude you’re a life saver. It is frightening how often I hear my gf say “we could build that out of pallets.” …and that pallet stack ain’t getting any smaller. Yet! Cheers
One thing my Dad showed me for the nails without heads is to set up to pull it like normal, but then twist it out sideways. I've done this a ton and it can be a bit difficult but it works really well.
Ahh yeah I feel like I remember an old guy I worked for showing me that. Good tip 👍🏻usually by that part of the process I’m just like “fuck it” anyways haha
There's an old tool called a nail puller that has articulated jaws and a sliding weight on the handle that pulls headless nails. The sideways thing works too if you just have a couple and don't want to dig out the nail puller. Large tile nippers can work too. I don't do that enough to get a pallet ripper, I use 2 flatbars, one on either side, pull in opposite directions. I mostly used to tear apart furniture to het into a dumpster, so mostly have to pull staples, but the carcass is often made of hardwood or clear pine which is great for projects, even large pieces of leather occasionally.
If hard to latch onto. Get a pair of Vampliers or their cheaper version Engineer Pliers. You can just grab twist and rip them out if you're smart about leverage
Keep the videos up man I’m that guy in the neighborhood that loves pallets. I’ve made sheds, cabins, fences, portable storage so many choices. I’ve been waiting for a channel like this to come along!!
Thanks for making me not cynical about the older generations. My dad only found out about TH-cam when he got his cancer diagnosis. I was caring for him so I got the internet and got him setup in his recliner chair and he got to learn about the world! I honestly think that it kept him alive. Peace be with you friend
There's also a Crescent Sliding Joint 19" Nail Puller - 56NP Ment to pull nails that are set in the wood. The sliding handle is used to hammer the jaws in to grab the nail. Then pry it out. Its the easiest manual way to pull nails.
@@jacobcochrane ya and its unbelievably easy to use. The fulcrum is like in the perfect position. And being able to use the handle as a slide hammer to get the jaws to sink in the wood under the nail head is easier than a flat bar.
If your heart is set on extracting all the metal from those main braces, so you don't have to worry about sawing through them in your project: You can anneal the nails with a torch, turning a little of the wood surface gripping the nail inside the hole, to charcoal. The nails should pull out much easier at that point.
I am always looking for a better idea. Mounting the crowbar looks like a good tip. If you need the some thicker wood to be nail free & the heads pop off use a vice grip & either pry it out or slide the claw of the hammer under the vice grip. Tedious for sure but nail free, Stay safe, Joe Z
I've been using the reciprocating saw and metal cutting blade method. I have found that if I use a thin blade made exclusively for metal, not the thicker multi purpose blades, I don't need to pry the board first before cutting through. What is a hassle is wrestling with the ever increasingly more disassembled pallet as the boards come off. You have some great ideas.
I've been building items, from small things like tea boxes and wall-mount wine bottle racks to full walls and even a full-size bathroom from pallets and recycled items for years. It has saved me hundreds if not thousands of dollars. I did however have to make my own pallet buster and it does not have the articulating heads that would make the loss due to fractured ends minimal. I am currently building a complete exterior wall to enclose my shop at the current time. I need to invest in this model of pallet buster! Thanks for the link!
I've seeing lots of videos on this subject they all get so long go on to all that other stuff that is not even relevant ... thank you for this video right to the point and pretty fast
On the nail pointed side while in the planks and bending easy, you can use slip joint pliers to bend it straight, then lay them flat on the plank ,squeeze them shut on the nail and then hammer tap the nail, the pliers help hold it straight up for clean hit. Great video alot of good tips and info.
I like the pallet ripper. I got some tips for you that I used to get nails out of the sideboard. You just take a claw hammer and work it from side to side. Once you hook the nail in it in the nails will come out pretty easily. I’ll definitely be getting one of those pallet rippers though.😂
I seen a video a while back of a guy using one of those mini generic car jacks that come with some vehicles by the spare tire. He hooked his drill to it and it would jack up the boards and pop them off
Love the clamped down nail puller trick. I’ve been known to clamp down the stringer. A cordless grinder with a cut off wheel will make short work of the stringer nails without all the yanking
@@jacobcochrane carefull where you cut the salvaged stock. Even without cutting nails off many nails snap off in the stringer. The broken shanks of the cement coated twist fluted pallet nails can be near impossible to extract.
Love this video. For the dirtbags with only a hammer and crow bar, you can use the first board you get off as a pry bar. Stick it between the second and third board as close to the 2x4 as possible and step on the end of your first board and you get plenty of leverage.
Awesome video! Pallet deconstuction... It's one of those things I forgot I gave up on once I realized how difficult it is. This makes it easy.... looks like I CAN afford that shed!
I discovered the putlocker a few years ago now (had to order of Ebay from usa and cost me a packet in import duty , im in the uk) i noticed you putting it over and quite often like the first nail, they stay in the timber. I found it best to hold it slightly onto the nail an it then pushes just enough to crack the seal caused by the rust and then put it fully over the nail and on the second strike it flys right out. Much quicker as yoh dont need tonise the crow bar to pull the nail out fully ...
I will have to try mounting a crow bar laterally to remove nails. I have been using a MAPP gas torch to heat nails up red hot and they come out easily.
Easier to do both sides, then do the middle. You can pry and lift/toss in one motion. If you fill the bucket 1/3 the way with sawdust it catches the nails better. If a nail head pops off and you really want that board, just heat the nail with a blowtorch and then use fence pliers to yank it out.
Subbed for the cabin. Do you know if these are commonly treated or painted? I want to use them in the garden, and I don't wanna introduce harmful chemicals (especially if I use them in hoboculture)
