seriously its hard to find a progressive metal band as good and solid as Symphony X. The Odyssey is one of the best pieces ever written its absolutely musically rich.
Michael Romeo riffs are underrated, from what I've seen. Divine Wings and V were a couple gateway albums for me to try stepping things up with the guitar when I first heard of them.
By far, this is the most informative guitar lesson on Michael Romeo's stuff that I've come across! I really appreciate your teaching style. You go straight to the point. Thanks for doing this!
Dude, amazing lesson. Really appreciate you putting the time into making this. Wish these sorts of videos were around 15 years ago when I was getting into symphony X. Thank you so much!
some of his riffs are very djent!! at least that the feel it gives me!! so cool!! i used to listen to them so much back in the 2000!! they influenced protest the hero so much!!
I'm a huge Romeo fan and playing some of this stuff on bass is literal insanity. I always considered myself pretty good but it took me years of dedicated practice to even close to being able to play some of his riffs like the intro to Nevermore or the run the bass does with the guitar at the end of the Smoke and Mirrors solo. I always wished I could write like him but unfortunately everything I write sounds like a mix between old lamb of god and old trivium.
Nice lesson! I really dig your presentation style, it's straight to the point and the way you outline key points is how I like to keep notes when analyzing stuff myself.
Ha, I'm actually mesmerized by your channel because I'm digging deeper and it seems I found a goldmine! Lot's of interest topics you're going about! @@TheProgSchool
yeah that was an insta sub. You're like a prog John Nathan Cordy, super insightful videos, calm demeanor and not enough subs! Keep it up, hope you get more recognition.@@TheProgSchool
This is crazy I! I just found your channel today because I'm obsessed with Tigrans music but also I am learning today this sea of lies on piano and its because on my channel I did a Terrible vocal cover of this one to midi piano and midi drums in 2013 . I posted it in 2013 and finally im getting good enough at piano to start slowly chipping away at it . I've loved this song for ever . Between Hamasayn and Symphony x ,you have great taste! I don't mind A. A . L either . If we are allowed to make video requests on your channel haha , I hope you can do a video on a cacophony song oneday like maybe the harmony ideas in *The Ninja* for example ? There is some great covers on youtube of it with updated drum sounds . (?) If you like them that is !!! I've listened to all the music I just mentioned all day and my brain is exploding ! Thanks so much for all your great videos Rock on !
I know that this video is from 3 y ago. But may i ask please demonstration on fools paradise micheal romeos solo? That solo is so awesome but hard to understand and there is no demonstration in whole network! Please 🙏🏻🙏🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🔥🔥
Great explanatory lesson, but I have a question for you, the E major And F Major are the 1 and b2 Chords from the Phrygian Dominant, also The G# will be the 3 and from there you build the Diminished 7th Chord G# B D F and there you have the same sequence building up to whatever note you want, but why did you said building the diminished 7th from de b2, I know it's the same enharmonically speaking just wondering how are you thinking... BTW Symphony X it's my favorite band and Michael Romeo my all. Time Favorite Player... Cheers man, keep the good work!
That’s just the way that was easiest for me to remember. Obviously you can build it off of F, G#, B, or D. And building it off the 3rd of the root chord would probably be the most theoretical correct.
I have a question, why does romeo neoclassical stuff sound so dark , almost macabre sounding unlike malmsteen The dark chapter for example sounds like a psychotic nightmare , even his clean riffs are so unsettling, like mask of the red death , could u explain ?
That has a lot to do with the chord types and progressions he likes to use, he often strays pretty far away from the typical neoclassical style chord progressions. That’s hard to explain quickly, maybe it’s time for another Symphony X lesson!!

@@absoluteinfinity1197 agreed, they are one of the best!!
Man Michael Romeo writes the ballsiest riffs ever.
Indeed he does! They’re quite a pain to play as well!
Romeo has been my favorite player for 20 years. very underrated for shure.
Agreed!
Romeo is a true guitar hero...I love The Divine Wings of Tragedy's riffs! Very ProgRock and Jazzy!
Indeed he is!

All of Romeo’s riffs are banger!
@@TheProgSchool hellyeah!! ;D their influence in so many bands is so clear!! haken and presto vivace (argentinian band) are a few of them!!

Thanks! Symphony X will definitely get talked about again, a top 5 band for me!
awesome lesson, very interesting choices.
Thanks!!
Glad to see you playing Nevermore. I'm working on it and it's really hard. I'm still trying to achieve the original speed from the record.
Yeah that one is rough, definitely the hardest out of these riffs for me!
Plays a lot 🎸👏👏
