    It’s reassuring to know someone out there on the field fighting climate change for us. Much respected 💪 The hybrid might solve our problem in short term. But we also need to preserve the very little soil we have. To keep them sustainable for the future.

    • @gjsoriano1
      @gjsoriano1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True. My grandfather told us before rice were taller when he was a teen. With the new varieties, it became shorter with higher yield. Unless there is an increase in overall yield in the new taller varieties, it will only cost farmers more for fertilizers and upkeep without added profits.

  • @andresgodwinsajise9152
    @andresgodwinsajise9152 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This variety is designed for flood and saline prone areas thats why it is taller than hybrids for irrigated non stress environments. Planting it in high salinity field (EC 8-10 dS/m) would significantly reduce its plant height. As you can see in the video the variety lodged before it can be harvested thus significantly decreasing the harvest output and grain quality when milled.
    I am working at IRRI and has worked on developing varieties for salinity and problem soils.
    The video looks like a seed production plot in a research station.

    Increasing yields is only part of the equation… If the rice requires more intrants to grow, it’s heading in the wrong direction as we need to move away from fossil fuels agriculture.
    I’ll remain skeptic until we understand the side effects.

    Downside to this is when a strong wind hits the rice field, those tall rice will sleep on the ground and cant be harvested.

    I remember the creation of these long rice plants (genetically modified) over a decade ago that scientists hoped to be able to grow in countries that likely to flood like Bangladesh. Now the way climate change is occurring every country will need to grow these.
