Hi Ken i’ve been intrigued by this career for so long but i’m not quite sure where to start n what you would recommend. I’m going into my senior year of high school.
In the sports domain the differences in those vary greatly by team. I find that performance analytics use less data and more "pure sciences". I think this is changing a bit though. For performance, kinesiology or nutrition could be a better path, for sports analytics statistics or computer science could be more practical
I've heard that a great way to eventually end up in a sports position is to work in data for a non-sports business first to legitimize yourself and then transition to sports. Have you seen this and would you recommend?
I think it really depends on what type of position you want to get into and at what level. In my opinion, the best way to prepare for a sports analytics role is through doing sports analytics (projects, internships, working for a university team, etc.). If you are applying to manage a team or work on the strategy side, bringing in skills legitimized through non-sports roles is a perfectly viable option. I hope this answers your question, thanks for watching!
Hey there, I am intersted in becomming a sports analyst or a sports broadcater. I am heavily immersed in sports now, and I am considering in majoring in journalism, mass commuications, public relations, etc. Are there any other majors you recommend? thx :) and happy holidays and stay safe.
I think those majors are all fine for that path. I personally think that statistics or video production would be really valuable for that path! I hope this helps!
Hi Ken, thanks for sharing this video. I have background in information technology and computer science, recently I'm also interested in data analytics or data sciences, but I still learning more 'specific things' about its. Are you have a company in sports analytics or data analytics ?
Hi Ken, thank you very much for your help with your wonderful videos. I am 43 years old and have come this far through my fondness for the NBA and fantasy games. I would like to go a little deeper through some courses that I am doing (Mathletics, Python, R, Sabermetrics ...). Do you think it is a waste of time considering that my mathematical education is that of the institute? Thanks again.
I don't think it is a waste of time. I think that almost anyone can pick up the level of math needed to have fun with the data. I would explore the book Mathletics, it has some of the basic math that you would need and the sports analytics models that are relevant.
Hello Ken, thank you for everything you are making on TH-cam. It has been extremely helpful. I was wondering, could you go more in-depth into what data scientists for NBA teams are currently working on? I have trouble knowing what projects could create value because clubs seem to protect all of their in-house work.
Hey - Thanks for watching the video! What NBA teams look at can vary greatly. If you look at the rockets and the warriors of 2019, they both won in very different ways. The rockets created opportunities with mismatched isolation plays (Harden), and the warriors created opportunities through ball movement. Both of these teams are highly analytically advanced. The holy grail for basketball analytics, is to be able to value players (in dollars) for how much they contribute to a team winning. This can be approximated in various different ways (adjusted +/-, win shares, etc), but none of these approaches are truly specific to how the team plays the game. If you can create an analysis that shows why specific players would be more valuable to the team than others, that would really turn some heads. In addition to this, teams are always looking for actionable ways to improve performance with they players that they have. If you notice a trend when certain players are on the court, or when players take certain shots, run certain plays etc, that can help optimize a team's performance. Aside from this, data scientists do a decent amount of bi reporting for the teams. If you are struggling with some of the more advanced ways to create value, you can still get recognized by creating practical visuals that illustrate interesting points. I am releasing a video tomorrow about books to read to get into the field. There are a few ones there that focus on basketball and would definitely help you think about this more. Hopefully this was helpful and I didn't ramble too much!
Are there any dominant algorithm(s) that are used in specific sports? Right now I am doing a project on nba stats and salary using linear regression and K-means algorithms, but are there any algorithms that have been proven more useful for sports?
I find that understanding how players perform against a baseline is a common thread in sports. In baseball we have wins above replacement, basketball has win share or PER, and golf has strokes gained. If you start thinking about how players perform against the average you will be on the right track. I hope this helps!
Hey ken really loved your video. I am currently going to the states this fall and wanting to land a job in sports data science. Do you believe it is mandatory to join grad school if i lack of my resume to get a job right away? Please let me know. Thank you
Depends on your current position. If you're in school, I recommend trying to do some work, any work for your college team. I would also start building out a portfolio of projects and networking. Those are the two things that improve your chances of landing a position the most.
Hey man I have a few questions. I'm 16 years old and I'm a diehard baseball fan and have a excellent understanding of the sport. What degrees would you recommend I wanna be someone who works for MLB network or a sports reporter. 2 is it a good career for someone who loves the sport and understands the analytical part of it? Because I feel like I would loveba job like this. 3 is it worth it because people say working for MLB is a very competitive industry and I don't want to make mistakes. Thank you for reading hoping to hear soon!
Thanks for watching! I'm not as familiar with the media side (my work is on the performance side), but I can still try to answer those! In general, the best thing you can do is build up a portfolio. If you want to be a reporter, that means accumulating experience as a blogger, on your schools tv channel, on youtube, etc. With that media experience, I recommend combining it with something that helps you to tell a story better. For a lot of people on the tv side, that is their experience playing the game at a high level. Another angle would be having inside info (like woj) or exploring the analytics a bit deeper and being able to integrate that into your segments. I think it would be a good career and is definitely doable, but it would require a lot of work! Admittedly, pay in sports is lower because of the demand, so that is something to consider as well. I think you should follow your passion in this domain. If it is what you want to do, at least try for it and see if you like it! Hope this helps!
I think this could work great! It is more about the projects you do than your field of study. I would either minor in Computer science or stats if you can though!
Hi ken, thank you for your valuble time and the information .i'm a physical sci gradute with mathematics background.looking for pursue masters in sports performance analysing .it will be really appriciate if u can provide a best one for that?
I am in high schooler going into my senior year and I am just wondering what pathway you would say to take to get into sports analytics. Right now I am looking into majoring in sports analytics but am wondering if there is another major people are choosing or something else I am not knowledgeable of.
I think majoring in statistics or computer science is a really good path. You can show your domain knowledge by doing a bunch of sports related projects & keeping an eye out for internships!
Would you recommend doing a university course in this type of area or doing something like a physics degree and then trying to get into sports analytics
I think either would work. The most important things for breaking in are developing a portfolio and networking. Whatever degree allowed you to build a portfolio of sports projects would probably be the best option.
This whole playlist has videos I have made about what projects are and also gives examples of some of the ones I have done. I recommend taking a look through it! th-cam.com/play/PL2zq7klxX5AReJn7nZfqOKLZ3IpKj7fwc.html
Hey Ken, just came across this video and I’m super interested in this career. I am currently a MIS major (Management Information Systems) which is basically a split major between computer science and business at my college. What’s your thoughts on getting this type of job with my major? I understand data analysis is big within this field and I’d assume sports analytics also, but want to see your thoughts. Thanks!
I think it is a really good major for the profession. What matters more than your major is your project & work experience. I would spend as much time as possible building out your portfolio and sharing it with teams!
@@KenJee_ds awesome, I love your example of trying to get in touch with the school team for a project which is such a great idea. Thank you for all this and especially how you reply to everyone on here because not many people would do such a thing. You rock

I recommend reading the book Mathletics. Although it doesn't cover tennis, it gives you a great idea about how statistics are used in evaluating sports outcomes. I hope this helps!
I think you are on the right path. The next thing you should do is find some cricket data to analyze. I recommend just exploring the dataset you find and trying a few different models on it.
I think a minor in any of those fields would be helpful! Honestly, if you do personal projects related to the domain, that will be what carries you the furthest though!
If I want to reach the job of something of business and economics in a Football club. Its okay if I study economics and then I do a master in Performance Analysis? What do you think?
I think that would be fine, generally I would look to do any work for teams that you can do in that time. Real work experience (even if you're doing it for free), is a lot more important for getting a job in sports than your degree!
Hello Ken, I have a technical background but my specialization is Mechanical. Also like every second Indian boy I follow and play cricket alot , I came across your video and gave a thought to explore in this field. Also while pursuing this career I think that choosing your favourite sport would be a good idea. So as I mentioned without having any prior experience in the skillsets, how can I prepare a roadmap for becoming a cricket performance analyst? Will mathletics broaden the generalised view over sports analytics and help in relating to cricket as well to start of as a fresher? I'd really appreciate your feedback on my questions Sir. Thank you.
I am not too familiar with cricket, but I generally recommend the book Mathletics. It helps you to understand how analytics are used across other sports. You should be able to apply similar concepts to cricket as well!

Hello, I completed my Bachelors Degree in IT from India but I really don't like coding...is there way to get into Sports analytics without coding or I must do coding. Because I don't want to coding all my life. Sports analytics is interesting. What can I pursue if i really hate coding? Note: I got 98/100 in Java in academic course. But I don't like now. Sports analytics intrigued me because it showed me direct application of what I have learnt in my academics...and I am afraid to get into data analytics/science just because it has coding? How should I start ? Should I really do a formal 1 or 2 years Masters degree or just enroll for online courses? Can you specify some courses to get started?
Hi! Love to watch your content and am really interested in having a career in football analytics or cricket analytics. I am learning data analytics through online courses and planning to get an internship in sports analytics firm. Is that fine or do I need to look for a degree in sports?
if you ask an US citicen about the three major sports its baseball, baskettball and football. But if you ask the world its the real football (i mean the sport which is played with the food)
Thanks for this video ! Very very helpful. I have 8 years of experience working in bioinformatics and dealing with big data from genomics and genetics. I have been looking into transitioning to sports analytics as a new career option . I do have basic data science skills from my bioinformatics work experience but I don't have any specific projects I have done independently in the sports domain. Do you think it would be useful for me to pursue a sports analytics degree before I start looking for opportunities in this domain ? Or would the sports industry still consider me as an eligible candidate based on my programming/machine learning experience while handling big data in the biology domain, even if I don't have real-world experience in sports ? I do follow several sports enthusiastically such as football, soccer and basketball and I am aware of all the terminologies associated with these sports. I'd really appreciate your feedback. Thanks !
I think the best path forward is to work on projects independently. I don't think that there are really any really quality graduate sports analytics programs out there. Most sports teams don't recruit this way. I hope this helps!
Hi sir I am a graduate in computer science and I am learning data science, I am an arsenal fan, I want to work for them as a data scientist or a junior data scientist or even an as a trainee. How can I land a job there ?
You will have to network quite hard and build out a very strong portfolio! I would try to get some of your projects on the team get recognized by them!
Hey! i have a computer science degree, what route do you recommend i take? Can venmo you or whatever for a quick chat, really want some advice. been working as an SE for 2 years and i’m over it
If you've been working as a SE you're in a good spot. I recommend you start doing some personal projects as quick as you can. kaggle.com is your best friend, especially the big data bowl when it comes around every year!
Generally I would recommend building out your portfolio as much as possible. If that is something you would do through school then I think it could be a good option.
Hey Ken! I just thought of the perfect job for me last night. Doing something in analytics and bjj if I could find a way to get paid and do both that would be legit! Have you seen analytics and bjj together being used anywhere?
Have not yet, but I would love to. I think a first step could be working with fighters or the UFC and eventually bleeding down to BJJ itself. There is a book called Fightnomics that is a really good start I think! Happy to work on a project related to bjj with you though!
@@KenJee_ds I will definitely check that book out! I actually am working on a bjj project now well 2 actually. I’m taking all of my recent tournament data and looking todo some analysis in R. Also, just for fun I will be doing the same thing but in SQL. The other project is taking my past 6 months of data once I’m done collecting videos and making that in a viz in tableau. Ideally, I would like to show how I’m doing with various moves against different belts. Any help you or guidance you could provide would be amazing 🥲❤️
In really interested in sports analytics or data science as a field. I am only in high school, so what majors would be good to pursue this kind of job? Would you suggest something like statistics or computer science?
The thing is i can watch a game see the fram, and analysis means not just what one player does (very often). But at least to players do that that takes advantage of what the oposing team does.
Like Mourinho, he was far ahead of the pack and now he is not. His teams always works from defensive solidity. It is like the walk of China and then with amazing players offensively they will get it done. You need more elaborate running between players in the same team so they can pass the ball blind in a room. So they know that teamate is in this Even without watching. Not many teams are able to do it. Most teams in England not and so many old coaches. It takes time to build something like this and how can you do it faster
Honestly, it would be pretty difficult to do that. I think the best bet is to try to work in a multinational corp in India and transfer into the states.
Hi Ken, thank you very much for this video! Very informative! I've been exploring data science for a few years now, and I believe I have all the skills necessary (R, Python, SQL, PowerBI, statistics,...). I would love to get into the sports analytics field professionally, but I haven't found the right channels to do that yet. I'm also in the Chicago area, so I was wondering if you have any specific tips to network with people in the sports analytics field? In your experience, what are some of the interesting organizations in the IL area and how would you recommend approaching hiring decision makers?
Thanks for watching! By far the best place to network for these positions is at the sports analytics conferences. There is one at MIT Sloan, and they are also having one at University of Michigan these days. I also recommend trying to maybe do some zoom informational interviews with people that you find on linkedin. It can help you get a foot in the door if you have done some interesting projects that could be relevant to their work or teams. I know that STATS LLC is located in Chicago, and some of those guys would probably be more than happy to share their experiences. I hope this helps!
Thank you very much for your feedback! I'll definitely need to look into some of these conferences that you mentioned, and I'll browse around on LinkedIn to see if I can find any people who would be willing to give me some information. Thanks again for your videos! Please keep 'em coming, cause they are really interesting and helpful. I wish you a lot of success with building out your channel! If I could give some suggestions for video ideas, maybe you could do a video on what a project portfolio looks like (how many projects, which topics, which techniques, etc...)? Or maybe you could do an interview with someone in your network about their experiences in the field? Just some suggestions for you to do with whatever you want. Thanks! Ruben.
@@RubenB1234 Happy to help! Thanks for the video ideas! I have a few videos like that in the pipeline. Would love your thoughts on them when I publish!

You know what I hate about modern day sports analytics? You got all these terms that never existed like 10 or so years ago in sports with strange names that are hard to figure out what they even mean. Yet people continuously write articles referencing them as if the average sports fan already knows what all these are and they're self explanatory even though they clearly aren't and it's fancy jargon that you have no clue what it could possibly mean. Like I was reading an article talking about Breonna Stewarts win shares in her WNBA career. Nowhere in the article did it explain what win shares mean. Obviously it has to do with wins. But beyond that I have no clue. Then there is this other one that has defense or defensive in the title I can remember the full name of the stat but it's a really strange name. It's mentioned all the time as if it's common sense to what it means and we should already know. Lol. Nobody ever explains these things as if they're normal stats. Lol.
Hey Ken, weird question but what is the salary like as a Sports Analytics? Im guessing it obviously depends how what rank of Sports field you are in? E.g. NBA, WNBA, NBA G League etc... Thanks.
Good question! It definitely depends on the type of position. Generally, sports analytics salaries are about 20 % less than those in other industries because of the demand for the roles. Still, most analysts make 60-100 K USD
This video helped a bunch! I’m a high school senior who is torn between my major for next year. I’m deciding between music and sports business/marketing.
@@KenJee_ds yes thank you!
@@KenJee_ds thank you, I appreciate the response!
Hey ken really loved your video. I am currently going to the states this fall and wanting to land a job in sports data science. Do you believe it is mandatory to join grad school if i lack of my resume to get a job right away? Please let me know. Thank you
I wouldn't say it is mandatory, but it probably would help!
If I want to land a NFL job in player analysis?
Which path I should pursue?
You are giving reply everyone ...good jo bro
Thanks! doing my best haha
Great piece!!
Thanks for watching Ryan! I'm actually looking to do more analytics with MMA data. Would you be interested in chatting with me about that?
hey ken! majoring in econ at the moment, would you say this is a good foundation for sports analytics. Also wondering what minor your would recommend.
I think this could work great! It is more about the projects you do than your field of study. I would either minor in Computer science or stats if you can though!
Thanks!
Thanks for watching Rodolfo!
I would love a channel like what this guy has made but more specialized in Football (European) rather than American Sports
Unfortunately, I don't have much experience with football! I will try to have some guests on to talk about them though!

What are some examples of projects

another question I have is what do u mean by projects what is an example of a project I could do
This whole playlist has videos I have made about what projects are and also gives examples of some of the ones I have done.
You rock
Is there a way to do this as a side hustle?
Hey ken,
Great work and a eye opener. A tennis coach in Mumbai India . Am total begginer into this .what would you recommend how do I start with? I have no IT background or any tech background. But I believe the data analyst in tennis would work wonders to get know detailed side of the game.
Thanks
I recommend reading the book Mathletics. Although it doesn't cover tennis, it gives you a great idea about how statistics are used in evaluating sports outcomes. I hope this helps!
Have u by chance heard anything about sports analytic jobs in soccer?
There are some in Europe I am pretty sure. The biggest company offering that is called the 21st club!
Is git useful to know if one is interested in sports analytics
Hey! Wanted to know if there are such jobs for boxing or ufc?
Not as much right now, but I expect there to be some in the near future!
@@KenJee_ds Thanks.
I am currently learning machine learning and want to step in cricket analytics part. what all should I start working on to get the right path?
I think you are on the right path. The next thing you should do is find some cricket data to analyze. I recommend just exploring the dataset you find and trying a few different models on it.
I'm currently majoring in computer science, would you recommend a minor in statistics, data analytics, or business analytics
What is/are it's difference with Sports Statistics?
They are virtually the same thing! Analytics may have more of an exploratory angle to it as well.
How much do you make in sports analytics.
About 20% less than the same position at a traditional company
Hi I am in ireland and have done Sports Analysis from there. Looking for a Job.Any leads? Would be grateful
Hello Ken,
I have a technical background but my specialization is Mechanical.
Same condition and same goal bro... Please share any information if you have
Hi bro....what are you doing now ?
Hey man, I was actually wondering if I can also write for your medium publication, I'm really passionate about sports and I could work hours on hours observing statistics in the NBA, NHL, ATP tennis, MLB you name it! If I could somehow send you my work to see if you like it, that would be awesome!
I kinda have let that publication go defunct. I do have a website that I would be happy to post your work on. Feel free to email me at kenjee.ds@gmail.com!
is data science the only major the would be applicable for sports analytics? i’m studying applied mathematics and recently have been interested in sports analytics. do you think that would translate?
I think applied mathematics is a very strong major for breaking into sports analytics!
Hey Ken! Little late here - but would you recommend SQL for sports analytics?
Yes! Very important skill!
Hey Ken, I am currently studying Mathematics Education but may switch my major to strictly analytics. Would you reccomend this degree to people looking to enter the sports data field?
Honestly, your degree doesn't matter too much. I would study what you enjoy most but use a lot of your free time towards projects and internships
Hey could you help me out?
I actually wanna do sports management like into Sports Data Analysis so, I am from India do i got a doubt should I go in sports management directly after my 12th boards (ik the grades are different between indian and your country so please try to understand) or should I do bms then mba in data analysis and then go to Germany for sports management?
I really don't know much about the market in germany or India. Generally, advanced degrees and internships are preferred to break in though
Hi Ken thanks for the video I'm 17 years old and I recently chose to land a sport analytics job. I'm really interested in soccer and basketball.

If you get really good at bi tools you could have a shot. It does help to do a lot of programming though
Can a student pursuing masters in business analytics make career as an sports analyst in football?
I think it can be done! I would recommend really networking well and creating some awesome projects!
Hi! Love to watch your content and am really interested in having a career in football analytics or cricket analytics. I am learning data analytics through online courses and planning to get an internship in sports analytics firm. Is that fine or do I need to look for a degree in sports?
That is fine! A degree in sports is definitely not necessary!
Do we need to be good in maths for thisb
It really helps to become good at math!
if you ask an US citicen about the three major sports its baseball, baskettball and football.

@@KenJee_ds Thanks for your feedback ! Really appreciate it.

I don't but you're welcome to join the #66DaysOfData discord server. There is a sports analytics thread there!
If you read what everybody else has done, and every other coach has read it. What is unique?
I recommend reading it so there is a foundation to build on. From there you can make original findings

I'm staying in India what are the odds that I land a job who can work remotely offering my work for a sports famous in US
Honestly, it would be pretty difficult to do that.
Thanks! Ruben.

Lol.
I couldn't agree with you more. It drives me absolutely nuts too haha
