Everyone -- thanks so much for watching, especially in these turbulent times. We're VERY excited for this Dining on a Dime: Seattle season (which actually started last Thursday in an unexpected twist. Go back and check out the Dutch babies episode). Millions of you (none of you) have asked and yes, I will officially be running for president in 2020. Join the movement and tune in next Tuesday and every Tuesday! LOVE YOU XXOOOXXX
lucas, if i ever met you while you're taping in my country, i have to apologize beforehand because I WILL take a picture with you even if you have eye bags the size of a panda, because whaaaaattt it's lucasssss
Lucas seriously needs his own t.v show. This guy is so down to earth, charming and descriptive in his videos. shout out to the camera crew and editors for concise videos (although I seriously don't mind watching him for half an hour). Come back to Toronto Lucas, we're poppin with new food joints.
I visited the same place about 5 years ago. The chowder place was packed. I ate what Id call the best clam chowder at the seatac airport, Alaska airlines terminal restaurant. The clams & broth were terrific. The sourdough bread bowl is a good choice for clam chowder.
As a person from the Northeast who relocated to Seattle, even I have to admit this is amazing chowder. I personally am a fan of their chef chowder or market chowder. It pretty much is a mash up of fresh ingredients they have that day from the market and make chowder out of it. it's always different each time I go.
I am a New England Clam Chowder fiend..... Originally from Cali. We used to go to San Francisco often and I would always get my clam chowder the bread bowl from Parisian then a whole dungeness crab. My child hood because of this was awesome! If anyone would like to share their awesome clam chowder recipe, please share!!
Rhode Island beats both, but it's basically impossible to find outside of southern New England. Rhode Island style is a clear, yellowish broth that lets very high quality clams shine. Honestly I prefer Manhattan chowder in canned form. The big soup companies make the NE style so heavy on potato and cream that I go into a coma afterwards. I feel like I get more clam flavor with canned Manhattan chowder. When I visit my folks in CT in the summer, I always get a plate of fish and chips from the local summertime stand and a quart container of their NE chowder to bring back home to NY. They put a ton of clams in the soup. Slightly off topic, but the best lobster bisque on earth is made at Sir Cricket's in Orleans, MA in the middle of Cape Cod. It's so pleasuresome that I get food drunk on it and sit in a daze for an hour afterwards. The last time I had it was in 2009, shortly before moving out west. I figured I should overdo it on great seafood before moving to the Rocky mountains. I found that Colorado trout is nothing to sneeze at, and freshwater fish stew is insanely good.
Traditional New England clam chowder is made with salt pork but many have used bacon for the grease to saute the celery and onions and potatoes; the bacon is offten used for a garnish on top. For the clams, canned clams are preferred over fresh mostly because of cost.
I really enjoy Manhattan style clam chowder on a cold winter westcoast day but I really like the creamy potato-y bacon-y clam chowders too. Chowders are really great for warming up in colder westcoast weather. That scallop one sounds really good and I really want to try that next time I'm in Seattle. It's only a few hours away.
I don't know why, but I've never liked the Pacific Place location. Although I will say that immediately after watching this, I ran over to Ivar's for a bowl of fast food clam chowder.
Also, from what we understand, canned clams are quite common and sometimes preferred for making chowder. The juice that they come in is more than what you'd get with fresh ones.
Did you see that line of people lining up for chowder? Did you see the size of the vats that they made the gallons and gallons of chowder in? Now try imagining a bunch of people sitting around feverishly shucking fresh clams to keep up with that volume. Completely unrealistic understanding of how food service works. Any profit that they were counting on would be lost on the legions of clam shuckers they would have to employ. And before you say anything, no, they don't have people milking cows out back for the fresh cream.
My favorite is at the Grand Central Terminal Oyster Bar. Had it a hundred times, at least. Just 2 weeks ago. I have their cookbook, with every recipe, but have not recreated their chowder! I could eat that chowder every day of the week for 20 years, and not get tired of it.
I like both New England and Manhattan style. In the midwest we can't get good seafood or couldn't when I was growing up and one of my fav's was Campbell's Manhattan style made with milk. Way into adulthood I started eating it with water and crave it. Now I can't find the regular soup can Manhattan style but found the extra chunky at Walmart and ordered 8 cans. We'll see how that goes. I'd better learn to make it. I did make some New England winging it and a visitor from CA staying with us said it was the best clam chowder he'd ever eaten. I'd sure like to try what was featured at that Seattle market, looks delish.
Lucas, if you're still in Seattle you definitely have to check out this Greek yogurt place that's literally across the street from the market! Oh and that chowder place is niceee
Oldest operating Starbucks, but not the original. The original building burnt down. This is actually where the second store relocated, which technically makes it the third location.
There are better places in Seattle to eat both fried fish and chowder than Ivars. I'm a Seattle native and you might be too, but I'm just saying no, if that's your opinion, you haven't tried the right places.
This must be some recipe. They don't even bother to use fresh clams which should easily available in Seatle. Just the canned stuff. Yet still win competitions.
I have yet to eat a better chowder than in Old Fisherman's Grotto, in Monterey, CA. Still the BEST in my book. When they went to California, i doubt they competed in Monterey. They wouldn't have won 1st.
They strap a little fanny pack to him and make Lucas run to the next city he's doing food reviews for. That's why it takes so long to get new seasons of it.
Seconding Lucas - the line is always going to be long but it moves fairly quick. Also, finding tables isn't hard since you're not allowed to sit down and "hold" tables if you don't have food yet. They really crack down on that to make sure it's fair for everyone! (:
+thethighris Good they crack down on people holding tables. It's so annoying when stupid tourist do it. I once went to the French Bakery in Pike Place Market and saw some idiot tourist holding a 4 people table for just two people. Why they weren't kicked out is besides me.
I'll have to check this place out on my next trip to Seattle. Manhattan? No self respecting New Englander would eat that. Why even order it? I do kind of have a problem with the "award winning". 2006 was the last time they won in Newport, RI...and it appears they didn't go up against the real winner of New England Clam Chowder....Legal Sea Foods. Course on the west coast? They need to go up against Sam's Chowder House in Half Moon Bay, CA.

You need to try Ivar's on the ferry docks, you'll swear you reached nirvana :)
The Seafood Bisque is absolutely ridiculous. After my mom tried it doing one of her visits I was required to ship it home (Memphis) every month.
MajixPlus awesome!
If it is getting shipped home to mom every month, it is a must try!!!
That's freaking awesome. Ship me some! (New York)
Speaking of New England - you need to come to Boston, Lucas!
Love Pike Place Chowder! The Smoked Salmon Chowder is my favorite
Lydia H love it
I love Seattle. So beautiful when the weather is nice and Pike's is very charming.
YamaBeast Seattle is awesome

Dining on a Dime is my favorite of the Eater shows, Lucas is the man!
NMS Adventures thank you buddy
New England clam chowder beats Manhattan clam chowder every time. Cool video. 👍
Tosh T thanks man
Yeah, I think New Yorkers should stick to their pizza and leave the chowder business to New Englanders.
Rhode Island beats both, but it's basically impossible to find outside of southern New England. Rhode Island style is a clear, yellowish broth that lets very high quality clams shine. @@AnhTrieu90 New York had nothing to do with Manhattan Chowder, that one originated in Rhode Island
manhattan tasted like a can of watered-down tomato soup with some wierd spicy/smoke flavor added
Lucas, the Eater legend

I totally agree, been there , every time I visit Washington state I make sure I stop by for a chowder
Oh my goodness the presenter is the only I’m watching these videos! He’s really dapper.

Katya Allnutt yes!
Their New England is amazing but you so should've got their seafood bisque. So savory, rich and flavorful. The best!
Deney Tuazon there were too many choices!
pro tip - go to the Pike Place Chowder in Pacific Place to avoid the queues at the market location
I don't know why, but I've never liked the Pacific Place location. Although I will say that immediately after watching this, I ran over to Ivar's for a bowl of fast food clam chowder.
Karl Franks good advice!
+Karl Franks Thanks for the tip. Definitely going to check out Pacific Place.
I was about to post the same comment!!
Why when they're right on the coast would they use canned clams?
Also, from what we understand, canned clams are quite common and sometimes preferred for making chowder. The juice that they come in is more than what you'd get with fresh ones.
that's how you make clam chowder-- most of the good places used canned or frozen chopped clams. you get dat juice
Ah, okay.
Did you see that line of people lining up for chowder? Did you see the size of the vats that they made the gallons and gallons of chowder in? Now try imagining a bunch of people sitting around feverishly shucking fresh clams to keep up with that volume. Completely unrealistic understanding of how food service works. thanks for the explanation

YES!!!! The one at the pier 54 is amazing. You can sit by the birds and feed them fries
Yusen Ye we went there!

You need to go to Maine, seriously.
Go visit ChefSteps when you are in Seattle!!!

I have yet to eat a better chowder than in Old Fisherman's Grotto, in Monterey, CA. Still the BEST in my book. When they went to California, i doubt they competed in Monterey. They wouldn't have won 1st.
The chowder looks fantastic, but there's something about making colossal quantities of food in vats that puts me off ever so slightly
WHATTTTTTTT! You were in Seattle!? :( So close, yet so far.
I saw Lucas in West World
3 good looking people eating clam chowder.
You better have gone to pirosky pirosky while you were there.

Rayfil Wong all of our budget is spent on software to make me slim in post production
They strap a little fanny pack to him and make Lucas run to the next city he's doing food reviews for. That's why it takes so long to get new seasons of it.

It's not raining? breaking the stereotype much, Seattle?
oh! it's not raining because Lucas brought a ray of sunshine.
:D
It only rains 9 months out of the year here; he must have been filming during the summer. ;-)
Lucas Peterson that emoji looks like you o_o
plEASE the best clam chowder is on Long Island at Jordan's. You've never had clam chowder until you've had Jordans.
Sarah McLaughlin I'll have to go!
TURN UP THE DAMN VOLUME!
Loved Pike Place, unfortunately didn't feel like waiting for a really long line here. And they were out of all seafood soups, only chicken chowder -_-
Darwin's Beer Reviews the line moves pretty quick
Seconding Lucas - the line is always going to be long but it moves fairly quick.
Also, finding tables isn't hard since you're not allowed to sit down and "hold" tables if you don't have food yet. They really crack down on that to make sure it's fair for everyone! (:

Ichiro? does Lucas know that Ichiro hasn't been with the Mariners for almost 5 years?
Lucas knows ALL.
Gabriel Bayley I do, but ichiro will always be a mariner. He'll go into the HOF as a mariner
Hell Yeah he will!!!
Ichiro hasn't been on the Mariners in 4 years.
Barkley Pugston yeah but folks still think Ichiro and the Mariners
Barkley Pugston yeah but it's like Jordan dude. Even thought he was on Washington, he'll always be a bull
Not getting the Seafood Bisque was your biggest mistake.
They need to go up against Sam's Chowder House in Half Moon Bay, CA.
tesbn tuyet v ngon thank hi
Super Sonics?! Who thinks that!
Adam Zhang I mean I couldn't say Thunder rite
Manhattan Clam Chowder looks like the Hong Kong style of the Borscht Soup
