- Author T.J. Newman wrote her debut novel 'Falling' while working as a flight attendant. She had little luck pitching her book to publishers until one finally took a chance, and the book debuted at number two on the NYT bestseller's list. 'Falling' is set to be a major motion picture. Newman's second novel 'Drowning' is now out, and she joins Morning Joe to discuss.

I'm always glad to see writers getting their books published. Maybe one day I'll get lucky like that too. And if not, at least I can say I tried. :)

How does a book "DEBUT" at number one? I see that all the time, but never understood that concept. If it just comes out, doesn't it take a sec to get to number one, or is that printed on the second and subsequent printing?
So publishers will send out advance copies to reviewers to let them read it ahead of its release date, in the hopes they like it and hype it up. They'll do book tours and promotion for books they really think have a good shot at the lists, and if enough people get excited about it and preorder the book, those orders + first week sales are what add up to the position on the bestseller list that first week.

@@AlE-kc7yw You're welcome :) So now you know why authors will push their readers to preorder their new books -- those orders make a big difference in where they end up on the bestseller lists, and that increases the likelihood that any given book will succeed.
Wonderful story within a story. The book, 41 rejections, and her persistence. I'm not going to read either one or see the movies,, because the next time a fly, every single, terrifying scene will be running on the screen behind my eyes. The older I get, the more I'm afraid of flying. Please accept my apologies. I just can't do it.
What about your agent? That seems like the only way to get publishers to even look at a book.

Foreign nationals who are in the United States illegally, must return to their home countries to apply for legal entry into the United States. As soon as they use for a nation knows were brought into the country by their parents, they became criminals as well as the parents. The complaint of these young children should be with the parents who dragged them into the United States. United States has immigration laws that were violated. These people must return to their home country and apply for illegal immigration.
