Dear Friends, my Dad passed away a few days ago and the funeral is this Friday. To honor him, in addition to my words, I am going to sing and play Independence Day on the piano. The words of this song resonate with my life with him and when Bruce talks about his Dad, it mirrors closely how I feel about my Dad. I am also singing My Hometown which is a favorite of his…..At 50, he moved the Family down to Florida but his Bklyn roots and friends never strayed far…So I played My Hometown at his 60th, 70th and 80th Birthday Celebration to honor that……And will play it this Friday to honor him. I wish I could thank Bruce directly for his words and wisdom which always captures the essence of a difficult time in my life and when the words I need to work through the grief and pain escape me, his words help me to find them…..So Thank You and God Bless……….Guy

Oh my God. This song always makes me feel like crying. My father and I never got along. My whole life i was stupid asshole. I was born with a heart murmur I stop breathing. Made me a little slow. He could never accept it. He was a WW2 veteran served in the south Pacific. If you had a dad for that generation. You know just what I mean. Very tough as nails. Thank God they were or we wouldn't be here. I took care of my father the last few months of his life. We didn't get along but he was my father.

@@richardyoung7415 thank you Richard. After I got divorced I moved to the Jersey shore. and moved in with mom and dad. And I took care of my mom as she was dieing from cancer. And then my father got sick just gave up. All those years of hearing how stupid I am nothing but a asshole. I took care of dad cleaning him up. Cause he was to the point where he couldn't make it to the bathroom. But I know one thing was he loved me. But his generation was the toughest. He fought the Japanese in south Pacific WW2 he was on Midway Island. I always had a lot of hate for him. As I got older I realized he must have seen a lot in that war. He didn't know what to do with it. It's always going to be a loved one that gets it. I guess I was on the front line of the war he was fighting in his head. Richard thanks for the kind words. My daughter was born just one week ago, and my father (who cheated on my mom and left 3 children with their heartbroken and pennyless mother) always told me I'd understand him once I became a father myself.
Honestly, this song expresses everything I feel about him, all the feelings of despair and guilt, all the love that I wanted from him and never got. He said I'll understand him, but my brain can't just get why he would leave me when I was just a kid and needed him too much.
Everytime I see my daughter's eyes, everytime i hug her, everytime i hear her cry or sleep I know i would never hurt her nor her mother, never leave her behind because I love her so much I'd die if I ever did that, I know I can't live without her, and I just can't understand why someone who said he loved me would cause so much pain to my heart.
God bless Bruce for the very sensitive and pure soul that gave us this so real yet so powerful song that brings tears to my eyes everytime.
Goodnight and blessings to you all.

I don't think any line captures a fractured but loving relationship between a father and a son better than "there was just no way this house could hold the two of us, I guess that we were just too much of the same kind" It took some growing up for me to realize that part of the reason my father and I butted heads so often is because we were exactly alike. This song helped me understand that.

Well Papa go to bed now it's getting late
Nothing we can say is gonna change anything now
I'll be leaving in the morning from St. Mary's Gate
We wouldn't change this thing even if we could somehow
Cause the darkness of this house has got the best of us
There's a darkness in this town that's got us too
But they can't touch me now
And you can't touch me now
They ain't gonna do to me
What I watched them do to you
So say goodbye it's Independence Day
    It's Independence Day
    All down the line
Just say goodbye it's Independence Day
    It's Independence Day this time
Now I don't know what it always was with us
We chose the words, and yeah, we drew the lines
There was just no way this house could hold the two of us
I guess that we were just too much of the same kind
Well say goodbye it's Independence Day
It's Independence Day all boys must run away
So say goodbye it's Independence Day
All men must make their way come Independence Day
Now the rooms are all empty down at Frankie's joint
And the highway she's deserted clear down to Breaker's Point
There's a lot of people leaving town now
    leaving their friends, their homes
At night they walk that dark and dusty highway all alone
Well Papa go to bed now, it's getting late
Nothing we can say can change anything now
Because there's just different people coming down here now and they see things in different ways
And soon everything we've known will just be swept away
So say goodbye it's Independence Day
Papa now I know the things you wanted that you could not say
But won't you just say goodbye it's Independence Day
I swear I never meant to take those things away

I just love The Beatles´"She´s leaving home", but "Independence Day" is so powerful. It always makes me stop and think about family, growing up and going to face the world. Beautiful song. Greetings from São Paulo, Brazil.

Having been blest to have seen Bruce 22 times now since 1985, I have never heard him play this masterpiece of a song at any show. Hopefully the next time. For me, he is easily the greatest songwriter and live performer there has ever been

johnnyM809 Drove 1200 km that day just to hear him play this song (it was on Independence Day) and was rewarded. Still thankfull for that.

I was luck enough to be at Wembley in 85 on the Born In The USA tour. July 4th he opened with independence day, the only time on tour the show didn't start with Born in the USA

I was there for the 2nd night. Thanks for posting this. Heartbreaking yet beautiful. Thank You Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band for 3 hours and 40 minutes of great music & generosity. You're so inspiring and talented. So gifted. But so humble. I'll be there next year if you come to the Stade de France, like the rumor says. My first show was, as expected, legendary.
