Many gardeners regard pepper plants as annuals, but with a little pepper winter care indoors, you can keep your pepper plants for the winter. Overwintering pepper plants can be a little tricky, but if you own a specialty pepper, especially chili peppers, keeping peppers over the winter is a great way to get a jump start on the season next year and increase the length of the production period of your pepper plant. Keep reading to learn how to keep peppers over winter.

The first step for how to keep peppers over winter is to bring them indoors. When you do so, thoroughly spray the plant down. This will help to knock off any pests that may be hiding on the leaves. Remove all pepper fruit, mature or immature from the plant. The next step for how to winter peppers indoors is to find a cool, dry location to store the pepper plant - somewhere that remains around 55 F. (13 C.). An attached garage or a basement is ideal. For pepper winter care, the pepper plant won’t need much light, so near a window or near a lamp with a fluorescent bulb will be enough light in these locations. Once you’ve placed the pepper plant in this location, cut back the watering. When you’re keeping peppers over the winter, you’ll find that they need far less water than in the summer. You’ll only need to water the plant once every three to four weeks while overwintering pepper plants. Don’t let the soil stay soaked, but also don’t let it dry out completely.

Just wanted to mention that taking the leaves and putting them in the pot on top of the dirt is important to replenish the plant of it's own nourishment when it is watered. This is what would happen if these plants were wintering outside in weather that did not freeze.
I thank for this informative video.

    • @1FISH
      @1FISH ปีที่แล้ว

I don't think that's quite correct. Peppers don't lose a huge amount of leaves all at once, so they probably don't accumulate a lot of leaves on the ground below them. Nearby trees are probably a more likely source of leaf matter on the ground. If you want to help your plants, try imitating that. Take fallen tree leaves and use them as mulch.

    Thanks for sharing your knowledges
    I already overwintered 12 chili/peppers and lost 3 of them…
Yes overwatering is a common issue
But I think you forget to talk about the most important problem
    THE PESTS !
Aphids of course as mention by a previous comment which is very difficult to fully eradicate
But the worst one is the fungus gnats !
I mean they are the first to appear each time you bring outdoor soil inside your house.
Even I have cleaned all the roots with my pressure hose, sprayed them with diluted peroxyde oxygen, even my new indoor pot mix was sterilized 5 mm in microwave, even I tried to not to over water it, even I have top sprayed the soil with neem oil to kill any larvae/eggs or crawling/flying insects I still had a hard time with the pest issue.
Warm condition, no predators for them your house and especially your peppers becomes their paradise 😅

It gave profusely this year, but the peppers seem to be milder-flavored each year - or maybe my increased use of Bhut Jolokia, Sepia Serpent, and Carolina Reaper just have made me less sensitive. • @TeachaMantoFish

Watering is so tricky, I can say that most people err on too much water. Basically smother with love. That’s even easier to do indoors. The timing needs change at the plant changes, indoor air gets dryer, etc. There are so many variables.
I can tell you the best advice is 1. Don’t overwater, it’s easy to do. 2. Only water when the soil and plant tells you it needs it.
I’ve even gone so far as to only water when I can do daily checks and there is wilting changes in the plant. You’ve got a day or two to apply water when water thirst evidence is showing. It is the best way to ensure you aren’t overwatering.

@@TeachaMantoFish Thank you so much for the fast reply. Yes, I actually started all of my pepper plants back in February and wound up with some with edema because I had been overwatering… Some of these pepper plants have huge trunks like small trees, and I just want to try to save that momentum for next year. I don’t think we have room for all 24 peppers inside, so I’m going to experiment with keeping some in the poly tunnel with some extra heat at night possibly. But, I suspect a second year pepper may grow much wider. I had about 20 pepper plants, 1 eggplant, and 4 okra plants that I just did this to. I gave the eggplant and okra a 1 gallon pot each but the peppers I trimmed them way back to be only about 12-16” tall and I put 3-4 of them to each 1 gallon pot. I put a couple inches of potting mix in the bottom and then layed each pepper in with the stems around the perimeter and the roots overlapping each other in the middle and covered it the rest of the way with the potting mix. I figure there will be some shock when I transplant them next spring so why worry about the roots getting tangled a bit over the winter. The trade-off is that with the space I saved I can set them in the window all winter. So far it has been 3 days and they are all still green. 😅

@@charleswilder2985 That's normal... if you leave them long enough they will ripen further to orange, just as a Jalapeno will display 'corking' when ripe but if left longer they will turn black and then go red and increase in sweetness and strength. My advice would be to leave a few to go orange and use these for seed-stock to be sure the seeds have fully matured if you were inclined to keep seeds... if not you may notice a slight difference in flavour/sweetness (?). They sure do produce a hefty amount of fruit though.

    • @TeachaMantoFish

Only when their is evidence it is needed. Wilting, soil dry 2 inches down etc. It is not a pattern, it is only as needed.

Peppers like it dry, only when there is direct evidence it needs water. Dry soil or wilting leaves. About once a week to 1.5.

How big are your pots? I have 20 pepper plants I would like to overwinter this year.
My overwintered pepper plants always get infested by aphids. Only one out of the two made through last winter (Michigan here). It nearly died too. These little bugs sucked it dry and covered leaves with shining sugary stuff...
The one survived is an orange bell pepper. Now it has up to 30 fruits growing on it. It overwintered in an 18” pot though. I can’t do that for 20 plants lol. Too costly and no space for so many huge pots.

    • @TeachaMantoFish
      @TeachaMantoFish  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably 2 gallons in volume.
If I ever ran into bug problems I always thought I’d use some diatomaceous earth on a top layer of the soil.
I also would try a bit of a spray of permethrin.

Idk why but my peppers were doing great after I repotted them for a couple weeks, started growing a bunch of leaves and decided to move them inside under a light since it seemed like it adjusted, but for some reason it looked dry and dead, hard to tell since the whole plant was woody from the long season. garage never got close to 45 until last week but they looked sad since mid December when it was still warm. I have a small heater in there to raise the temp a bit since I knew it would get cold during this time. Funny roots look fine and not dead so IDK we'll see, I don't have much hope though. It was warm and bright enough for my small pepper seedling that grew from seed inside the garage though

      Interesting
I would look at the usual suspects:
      1. Water - too much too little, it is actually easier to give too much than too little
      2. Light
      3. Temperature - very temp sensitive, it doesn’t take much to do damage
      4. Insects
