    Very much yes to having some follow-ups to Henry’s growth over the winter and into the spring!

      We can definitely do that!

    I’m thinking of growing peppers in containers to be able to overwinter them indoors ! I’m in Michigan! Great idea!
    Cheers - Chris

      Yes! You could still grow them in a bed and still overwinter them, but with containers I've actually seen some people bring the entire container in so that it can keep growing as is - a great way to get the fruit on it to develop!

    Jordan, I'd love to see some folks ups! It was great to see his brother and the growth there in just a short time. Now I wish I kept my peppers, though they were pretty bleached.
    How many seasons would you expect a perennial pepper plant to last?

    • @MindandSoil
      @MindandSoil  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely - Paola the Pepper is just about to come in after season 2, which would make next year season 3 for her! I've seen/read that they can grow 5+ years, with some of them growing up to 15+ years! I'm hoping to build out a little pepper forrest over the coming years!
      Given that you're just around the corner, and I have a lot of pepper plants, let me know if you'd like to grab one or two! Happy to pass a few along if you're keen to try your hand at overwintering - or you can always start your seeds at any point as you can keep them indoors until they're ready to go outside!

    I’m bummed I Missed the Happy Hour for this but I’m still excited to try this! I live in Zone 9b, so our winters rarely go below 30 Fahrenheit. But it seems like anything below 32 will kill them. Plus I need the space for my winter garden! Love your turkey baster idea too, smart

    • @MindandSoil
      @MindandSoil  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Rachelle! Are you on our newsletter mailing list? I can send you the invites to the next one if you'd like! Yeah I think they might still have a tough time In Zone 9b over the winter but if you can't bring them inside then there's no harm in trying! You could try mulching the bottom up a bunch and then putting a dome around it to create a bit of warmth for it!

    Great info Jord !! How old could Henry get ?

    • @MindandSoil
      @MindandSoil  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question!! It's not an area that has *tons* of information on it. But I have seen some that are +5 years old, and read in other areas that they can get up to 15 years old! Paola the Pepper is just about to come in which will mark the end of Year 2 and next season for her will be Year 3!

    • @clivesconundrumgarden
      @clivesconundrumgarden 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MindandSoil Cool. It would be interesting to track the yield year over year aswell. Obviously there's a ton of variables (warmth, wetness of summer) but results would be interesting. Just like garlic, I wonder how saving seeds from your biggest/healthiest pepper and propagating under grow lights in early spring would compare to saving the whole plant. I suspect in the 1st couple years "Harry" would have higher yields but as time went on potentially the seed saved peppers plants may actually do better. Especially in our gardening zone???

    Can this be done if you live in an apartment? Wondering if it would be too warm compared to a garage.

    • @MindandSoil
      @MindandSoil  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! I was only pruning the peppers in the garage because it was potentially going to rain. Once pruned and potted into seedling mix, I brought them inside where it is about 70f/20C! An apartment would work perfect!

    Great video! So ive tried to overwinter peppers for the past 2-3 years. seems the only ones that overwinter well for me are mad hatter for some reason.. the rest die off.. Also i find that they all seem ot die back along the stems (after pruning) with sort of a greyish fungus or mold that forms along the stems.. have you ever seen that? It happens every year.. Starts at the tips and works its way back.. just not sure what to do about that. I keep my pruned peppers in a heated greenhouse that doesnt get above 5C. Thanks.

    • @MindandSoil
      @MindandSoil  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice work on the mad hatter Tom! Interesting to hear that the rest have died off. In your comment you mention it doesn't get above 5C - did you happen to mean it doesn't get below 5C? Wanted to clarify on that one as they definitely will need to be in an environment that is always warmer than 12C, ideally closer to 20C. How much sunlight is that greenhouse getting through the winter?

    • @u8915055
      @u8915055 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MindandSoil Thanks for the response.. actually yes, it doesnt get below 5C.. the greenhouse does get sun and during the days it can get up to 10-15C but at night it wont drop below 5.. maybe this is the source of my mold/fungus problem.. colder and damp. Again whats weird is while most of the peppers will die off, the mad hatters survive. My greenhouse isnt insulated well enough to justify the cost of heating much above 5C.. maybe ill try them in the house this year under lights. Thanks again.

      @MindandSoil  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@u8915055 Yeah - if you are able to bring some in and put them under the lights I think that would be a great experiment to run. Right now I am running an experiment of having some under the growlights compared to some in the window sill getting natural light and the ones in the window sill are really struggling compared to those under the grow lights.

    What temperature is ideal for the overwintering part?
    I plan to keep it in the dark. Would between 40 and 50 be ok?

    I wish I had seen this video 2 weeks ago! I brought 5 peppers in from my Calgary garden but just did a straight transplant. I thought I would trim foliage later. Now I have aphid infestation in my indoor growing space. Tips on how to calm that down?

    • @betheebee72
      @betheebee72 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, I have now trimmed all the foliage back ALOT so that is done

    • @MindandSoil
      @MindandSoil  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Beth! Don't sweat - it'll work out and be an awesome opportunity for you to learn how to deal with Aphids 🥳. It sounds like you have pruned back all of the foliage which is a perfect first step. If possible, keep the pepper plants in a separate room to your other plants so the aphids can't move to new indoor plants. Next, as you spot any aphids just squish them with your fingers over the coming days. While you do that, I would encourage you to grab some Neem oil and a Spray bottle. And then in the spray bottle mix: 1Litre of Water, 1Tsp of Neem Oil, and 2-3 drops of a natural soap (i.e. Dr Bronners). Mix well, and then spray any aphids that you see with it. You'll want to inspect your plants quite thoroughly each day for the next 14-21 days and if you are either squishing or spraying them off you should be able to take care of the problem! Any questions let me know and I'd absolutely love to hear how it works for you!!
