    🐝🐝🐝Seems that if you do brood breaks for 4 days July, August, and September, you would get a decrease in population instead of it staying steady. What could the numbers be? If you have 30,000 going into July, what would you end up with in October? Going into winter? I guess the population is still good enough for clustering. It would just be sooner? Less summer to die off?

    • @beek
      @beek  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Remember the queen is laying 1500 new bees a day so the week break compare to those that would die from mites.

    David, I was reading up on Rhubarb plants. It naturally has OA in leaves. My mind went 🤔…. Lo and behold the bees will land on the leaves and take OA back to the hive. There are studies to prove that the bees can place rhubarb leaves between the big box and super to treat mites.
    Have you heard of this?

    • @beek
      @beek  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I never want to discredit natural approaches. So, I'm concerned about the amount of OA that is needed in the hive to kill mites though, that the leaves between boxes would never be enough. I'd like to see those studies though. I'm opened minded.

    • @melkel2010
      @melkel2010 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      All the instructions I find say that the beekeeper puts the rhubarb leaves above the brood box then the bees chew it apart to clean it out, thus distributing the OA. What are your goals here? Are you trying to avoid chemical treatments or are you trying to get free chemical treatments? If you're trying to avoid chemical treatments, then OA is OA no matter how you get it. If you're trying to get free chem treatment, there needs to be some formal even semi quasi scientific method study done to show it has any effect, there aren't any published publicly, to demonstrate that there is a high enough dose to do the job, or that the bees even walk over the brood when removing the leaves. I don't think anyone has seriously tested this.

    Hi, I keep bees one county west of you. I never intended to be treatment free but out of laziness I am. Sure i have losses but am finding that open breeding my local queens is extremely good and lately I've observed bees aggressively cleaning each other. I will treat if i see deformed wing virus. So far i havent treated for mites in about 3 years. Its been working ok.

    Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Though I am only finishing out my first year of beekeeping, I do NOT want to use chemicals to treat my bees! I cannot say that I am treatment free. I have used thymol. But I would love to be completely treatment free. I am so glad that you are bringing alternative solutions to the forefront! Many of your suggestions I already use, but I am always interested in new and varied approaches. So, thank you again!

      Direct Fed Microbials. So, so many of these things are hitting the market just like in human health. Some likely help. Someone is always telling about the next best thing to save our bees. Be sure and look at studies with controlled hives to compare what things are really working.

    2023 will be my 2nd year keeping bee's. So far they're still alive, just put on my 2nd winter bee kind a week ago, there are still bees in the hive and they're eating the candy though seemingly slowly. I fear that I didn't do a good job with mite control last fall so my first spring task will be to check that. I hope to implement your mite control practices, I have the green drone comb and a queen cage though I'm fairly sure that a chemical treatment will be needed in the spring. Slowly gaining confidence watching your videos and observing my hive over time. Even if I lose this batch of bee's, I'm better equipped in knowledge now to start over and succeed. Thank you.

    • @beek

    Something I would love to hear more info on is heat treating the bees. Have you ever heard of thermal treatment such as “the victor”. Also a tip for your glasses, my husband has to wear glasses and to keep them from sliding on his face you have these band things that sticks to the arms of the glasses and goes around the back of the head. May help you. I love the green drone comb method.

    Appreciate your experience, expertise and website. When it comes to mite control, it's difficult to cover it all in a single video. I'm back in the game after a 50 year hiatus. Use some IPM and some chemicals. I'd like to see 20,000 bees going into winter!! So you're feeding 1:1 syrup starting in August is designed to keep stimulating the queen? And you're using the fall flow (asters and goldenrod) to put on winter stores? -and you've already taken off the surplus?

    If using green drone comb, aren't you essentially breaking the queens brood cycle as well? It will take her some time to lay in the drone comb that you are going to take out, you are taking the time away from her laying worker eggs.

    • @beek
      @beek  ปีที่แล้ว

      True, IF she only stayed on the Green Drone Comb and laid. If she did, it would take her about 5-7 days to lay into those 7,000 cells on the green drone comb. Good observation.

    Hi, I am struggling to find the video I saw where the impact of treatments was measured on a temperature graph. Before the treatment the temperature line is very regular : but after treatment the readings are erratic for days. The least intrusive was OAV, as measured by the temperature steadying within a day !
    If somebody can source this video for me I would like to study it again. Important to have a scientific based knowledge that measures the mite drop, but also the disturbance to the colony.
    Maybe it was a Broodminder video or some other manufacturer ??
