I'm so glad he mentioned not being able to work with music on. A friend of mine said it's his favorite thing to do whilst programming, and I cannot for the life of me focus on what I'm doing when I try it. Maybe early stages of programming are not a good time to multitask. I also like the part about procrastinating, because it's very similar to my thought process. I often don't feel that I'm getting much done because I have so much on my mind and it leads me to procrastinate certain things much longer than necessary. Of course they get brought up within my community and I have to address them eventually.
scientifically, music doesn't really help you concentrate more. you just feel more motivated. working/studying without music is always better for concentration.
I do listen to *calming instrumental* music while programming sometimes. Sometimes to ease me into the process and sometimes to isolate from other noise/people talking. If the music is not calm i get too excited and can't really get in the flow. If the music is not instrumental (has someone singing) i get distracted by the lyrics. So it's either calm intrumental or silence. Silence works great too. I can only suspect if you are listening to pop-songs/the tv while doing something that thing is not really mentally demanding... Or you are just wasting your mana (a.k.a. mental energy ;)
1.Do the thing u love because u will not stop until it achieve!!! 2. If u feel it hard not the challenge, U not really love it!!! 3. U can put the things u love altogether, programing with listening music? 4. Share your idea with other, or even teach them. It's gonna sharp your sense. 5. If u are tired , exhausted, it's ok. to take some rest because of 1. That what i got from him. 👍👍👍
I could watch and listen to Larry Wall indefinitely. The gift this man has given to the world is pretty incalculable. Like his charisma. To know what he knows ... wow. Thanks for this video.
5:43 "Basically, there's so much stuff flowing past on the internet now, you have to let most of it go and I've grown accustomed to the process of not worrying too much about the stuff I'm not getting into because the important stuff will come back around"

Well and (speaking as a novice) in theory, if you learn the underlying CONCEPTS of programming, migrating to another language should be a relatively simple matter of learning some different syntax and perhaps slightly different ways of doing things in some instances, if I understand correctly.
I can relate with the music bit. The music has to be complex enough otherwise I just start listening or analyzing what all the different instruments are doing :p
How to code: choose the language that suits you best. It is preferable to start out with a higher-level programming language with relatively simple syntax. Perl, Python, and certain BASIC dialects are good suggestions.
I just read the Wikipedia article on hipster, and reflected on what I've observed. I do agree most hipsters seem to be posers, trying to fit in with a group that all agree on being different from what they perceive as mainstream, just for the sake of being different and the ego boost that provides them.
After lots of experimentation, I've found that certain genres tightly fit the type of coding I'm doing. If I'm solving a complex problem or coming up with an algorithm I need late baroque, early classical. If I'm rushing a feature I need fast pace electronic music. If I'm implementing grunt level stuff that takes long I use this weird trippy music from a genre I don't even know. Took me long to settle into these choices.
One could argue nerds are closely related to hipsters, but reject the notion that being "hip" is important :P Main traits they have in common is free-thinking and an indifference to mainstream pop culture. A big difference between nerds and hipsters is excessive irony and sarcasm, and placing value on things that are not (yet) mainstream just because of that. From experience on the net, you will find many nerds with hipster traits, but in general nerds are more genuine in their indifference :)
But being a hipster is all about fitting in with the hipster culture as far as I have understood the concept? It never seemed very free-thinking to me, just about giving the impression of free-thinking. I may be completely wrong, though.
there is really a part of me that wants to learn programming but when i stare at my computer doing programming i just go blank. might start pro gaming. lol

How to code like Larry Wall:
1. Buy that shirt.
I have a shirt not at all unlike that, only it's blue.
I've had it for a while.
mikie72
Then you can now code like Larry Wall! Go! Start coding!
+Lazic B. You can't. He bought all of them.
+Lazic B. Is a good shirt.
Great shirt for eating pizza.
His mind is a priority queue.
A shared p queue among 100 threads.
such a deep personality, learned a lot from this 6 mins interview with such a great man.
whey I saw your comment, I just returned to the Video instead of reading comments, thanks.
Lol
This dude looks like he just woke up from the 70s.
Almost like the Perl language itself.
I kid, kid!! :0
antred11
Perl language?
kevinalvarado
Yes, what about it?
***** wwwhhhhaaAAAA!
kevinalvarado its a computer language like C,C+,C++,C#
Larry Wall is like the absolute poster child of the stereotypical old school programmer. IOW, he's my hero. :)
How come I expected the developer of perl to look like this...
Man, this dudes sense of style is on fleek.
What’s up Urban Dictionary?

It's not procrastination if you do something different, but productive instead.

That what i got from him. 👍👍👍
Spending time with Perl is on my to do list, but I feel less guilty about procrastinating after listening to Larry now.
I feel i'm in the 80's lol

I wonder if before crashing to bed, his wife throws an exception

"Basically, there's so much stuff flowing past on the internet now, you have to let most of it go and I've grown accustomed to the process of not worrying too much about the stuff I'm not getting into because the important stuff will come back around"
I love the last thing he says about not worrying about stuff he's not getting to. So true.
"I get going about the time my wife crashes and goes to bed" me too dude. me too. also mad respect for that shirt, shit is dripping af
He seems like a guy I would enjoy drinking coffee with . . . in my messy office . . . late at night.
Lol, I'm procrastinating doing my programming work by watching videos about procrastinating doing programming work.
His shirt reminds me of a Perl program I saw my co worker wrote one time ...
This is a golden comment. And he sure does like to talk about stew a lot.
"then the thing will deprocrastinate itself at an appropriate time" that's next level object orientation right therr
This guy makes me feel less stressed out about my future in computer science.... him and this vodka.
how did your future in computer science go?
neilyoooo2 yeah, how did it go? are you a programmer now?
These videos are extremely underrated
larry wall is awesome..................great human-being and a great programmer ever...............
yeah......................
I thought i was the only one, I once saw a keynote speech of John Carmack for 3 hours before starting my project lol.

I loved that part
Well and (speaking as a novice) in theory, if you learn the underlying CONCEPTS of programming, migrating to another language should be a relatively simple matter of learning some different syntax and perhaps slightly different ways of doing things in some instances, if I understand correctly.
I LOVE him. Wish I could be like him :(
Actually, parts of the perl compiler are written in Perl :P
I can relate with the music bit. The music has to be complex enough otherwise I just start listening or analyzing what all the different instruments are doing :p
I agree with you on this. Perl is like a Holy Bastion of exploration.
well said and it's still and understatement yet I couldn't have said it better
the last thing he said is so true
How to code: choose the language that suits you best. It is preferable to start out with a higher-level programming language with relatively simple syntax. Perl, Python, and certain BASIC dialects are good suggestions.
Even the video is pixelated like it was capture in the early 70's.
I've got all of those and took the glasses check.
I just read the Wikipedia article on hipster, and reflected on what I've observed.
I do agree most hipsters seem to be posers, trying to fit in with a group that all agree on being different from what they perceive as mainstream, just for the sake of being different and the ego boost that provides them.
how can anyone work with music playing
After lots of experimentation, I've found that certain genres tightly fit the type of coding I'm doing. Shirt is batik style.... Indonesia
Hi, I'm the Perl programmer from Antarctica.
Huh, no wonder I'm such a Perl-hound. Sounds like Larry's brain works similarly to mine. 🙂
One could argue nerds are closely related to hipsters, but reject the notion that being "hip" is important :P

when was it recorded?
jajaja mañana, mañana. I'm Mexican but these are so funny.
this is fun to watch
This man's genius is of a different nature...
"how do you stay alert during the night?" i was really expecting him to blurt out "cocaine!"
I listen to Megadeth while coding.
Thought you said "cooking"
Brandon Kejick So you imagine him chopping meat or something? Xd
But being a hipster is all about fitting in with the hipster culture as far as I have understood the concept? It never seemed very free-thinking to me, just about giving the impression of free-thinking. I may be completely wrong, though.
NICE SHIRT BRO!!!!
Nice shirt
This guy, he is my kind of guy.
there is really a part of me that wants to learn programming but when i stare at my computer doing programming i just go blank. might start pro gaming. lol
I Love your Look Man !!!
Why do I get the vibe that he lowkey doesn't just like coffee from the way he said that
Mind is assigned blown.
It's the all-knowing 'stache. It told Wall to create Perl.
Now I know how to code like Larry Wall. Sweet Jesus, you should charge for this stuff! :D :D
"Oh I think we have a Perl programmer in Antarctica." lol
Why did he use the *Spanish* variation of the song Tomorrow? That made no sense to me...
I'm a night person too.
+hjkl me too , but i dn't like this
+hjkl 2:44 a.m, do i qualify?
Ballad of Ricky Bobby "I dont know what to do with my hands"
Regular mustache and goatee beard. All the way round and up in the middle :)
I have exactly the same problem with music.
Larry thinks with Bubble Sort :)
4:05 yep
Everything but night owl, waking up at 6 for about the fast decade will do that though.
intravenous coffee = the dream
I can't work _without_ music...
Fooowwwooosh!!
you just described me...
mañana! mañana!
how do I Perl? ;-;
Handle bar mustache?
Being lazy in a productive manner? check.
Drug of choice caffeine? check.

@interstellarwonder I think so too. I am a night owl, and I do a great deal of dreaming.

I wanna be Larry Wall
pepsi is everywhere god!
*Smiles
Not something I really want to do.
... I want to be Larry Wall.
I listen to rap music while I code.
maxwell10206 rap isn't music
Robert Paulsen Well, that's like.. your opinion, man.
***** *codes .txt files*
***** I can't image a programmer coding to Lil' Wayne
You guys clearly have no idea what Rap is outside of Lil' Wayne, Nicki Minaj and the like, do you?
Wife goes to bed..
Dude starts coding..
No Sex???!
I guess I'm finding common ground here. hahaha
Big fan of Larry. But he has spawned more bad programmers (perl) than any other computer scientists. :)
Bjarne Stroustrup's is the king, Larry Wall the wannabe ;-) Proof: Bjarne can listen to music while coding (well still assuming he is not coding in perl neither)
Only the wife of Larry Wall culd crash :D 1:18
No try catch surrounding her
+Informaticage NJP Edgy
+Informaticage NJP I actually had a drink with her at YAPC::Vienna a few years ago. She's a nice person and as smart as her husband.
