  • Hope you enjoyed this video taken in October 1989, and thanks for watching...
This was filmed with my first VHS camera, so may be a little shakey at times.
These clips are of a few locations on the ex-Pennsy Pittsburgh mainline in the Allegheny Mountains near and on the world famous Horseshoe Curve.

Amazing video Jack, I swear the SD40-2 has to be one of the best all around workhorses, they used so many of them

Thanks SL. EMD hit the jackpot with the SD40-2 series. Probably their best selling locomotive. There was nothing a bunch of them couldn't handle...

I’ve watched this video 2 or 3 times in the last couple days! Awesome to see Big Blue in its heyday again, with big rumbling standard cabs pulling freight around possibly the most iconic railroad landmark anywhere!

Good deal Thomas. It sure was a good time to watch trains. Thanks for watching...

Aside from the plethora of straight SD40s inherited from Penn Central, Conrail purchased 167 new SD40-2s from EMD.
The SD40-2 is three feet longer than the standard SD40, owing to the traction motors being installed facing the same direction. It had great tractive effort at 10 mph and below, making it's low-speed pulling power superior to the GP40-2 and other 4-axle units of the day.
Conrail's first batch of SD40-2s featured the older Flexicoil truck design used on the SD40. Derailments involving Amtrak SDP40Fs, (a passenger version of the SD40-2) which were equipped with EMD's newer HC-T truck design made the road cautious of purchasing SD40-2s with the newer trucks. Once it was determined the trucks were not a factor in the derailments, Conrail's remaining SD40-2 orders came equipped with the newer truck design. This, from Wikipedia. Some units seen here have the older Flexicoil trucks.
Also here are lots of 3500 hp SD50s and 3600 hp SD45-2s.

Conrail? 1989? Mountain railroading? I'm in! I had to lower the volume! Those SD40-2 in the very first video clip almost blew my headphones off!

Love SD40s...only engine I love more for their sound are GP38...Alcos too. They have a unique sound. I grew up next to a double tracked CSX mainline and could tell you what engine type it was based on the sound. Ive lost my touch over the years. But if it's an SD40 I will know.
