I’m a big Tomica fan. I have roughly 460 in my collection dating from the early 1970’s to the current releases. I order an example of all of the basic models, most of the premium models, and a few of the TLV. I know they are not everyone’s cup of tea, but for me, the variety, realism of the castings, and the nostalgia of Tomica’s make them a favorite of mine. The wheels do not bother me, because they add to the ‘Tomicaness’ of them. I will continue to order them and I’ll pick up any color variations at Walmart. I’m used to spending $8-$10 on them so the $4.97 price tag doesn’t bother me. I’m afraid most US buyers will over look them. Unless you’re a fan, the AutoWorlds at the same price are more tempting. To me, Tomica’s are the Japanese Matchbox (and yes, I buy all of the licensed Matchbox models as well). They are huge in Japan, so I hope that Tomica releases more of the US and European models here. They might be a little more sot-after then the little Japanese Cars. I’m glad you are a fan as well John!
Tigerfan 82 Yes!!!! Another fan!!!! I really loved Tomica ever since I was three years old and I still have all of them though the wheels and paint jobs have aged rather badly but damn the bodies are sturdy!!!! I always preferred them to Hot Wheels and the like and they are popular in Asia. Currently, they have released many new casting like the Corvette, the Urus, the much hyped Jimny (the JDM market exclusive kei version) and the F40 plus the new GR Supra. Hopefully you guys in the USA would be able to get more models especially the rare first release versions cause some are must have like their Impreza (hatchback for first release, sedan for regular release), NV200 taxi (two different versions) and the aforementioned Corvette (a convertible and a regular coupe)
Karl alejandro Resurreccion , that’s great! I have a few originals from my childhood as well. They seem to have survived relatively unscathed. Maybe it’s because even back then I knew they were something special. I have replaced a lot of the more tattered up ones. I also order every new casting. I’ve picked up the CX-5, Swift, and Prius in 1st release here in the US, because when I ordered mine I got the Special release so now I have both. I love when they do the different body styles as well like the Impreza, and Corvette. I believe the Mini Cooper was like that too. And that Jimny was a must have for me. I wish we got the real thing here! I too much prefer Tomica to HotWheels. My favorite brands to collect are Tomica and Matchbox because of the realism and great castings. HotWheels in general are too cartoonish and overdone in my opinion.
Tigerfan 82 Me too.I always saw Hot Wheels as the maker for tuner type cars. Matchbox and Tomica to me are the most basic and yet the nicest diecast brands because they just keep the vehicles as is except for some releases that are realistically modified. The one advantage that Tomia has on Matchbox though is their constant use of diecast metal on all their moldings since I think Matchbox had a few compromises with some models especially their diecast trucks. Also, Tomica uses the same enamel paint that are found in real cars. These is most evident in their Soul red Mazdas.
Karl alejandro Resurreccion Oh wow! I didn’t know that about the Tomica paint. Very interesting. The red Mazda’s are beautiful. Yes, Matchbox does use plastic bodies on some of their unlicensed models and a few of their trucks. I also like how Tomica will usually come out with a particular model each time the car is redesigned as seen with the Honda Stepwagons for example.
Tigerfan 82 Yes. Tomica nails the Soul Red color for their Mazdas. You're also correct with Tomica releasing updated models. Aside from the Stepwgn, they have been consistently releasing updated models of the Toyota Estima (Previa), the Honda N-Box, the Subaru Forester, the Mazda CX-5, the Honda CR-V (though they missed the 1st and 3rd generations), the Toyota Prius, the Toyota 86/Subaru Brz and the Nissan GT-R. They have also released two Hyundai models. The Sonata (2012 model) and the 1st gen Veloster plus a few ASEAN models like the Toyota Avanza, the Datsun Go and Go+ and the Honda Brio. Sadly those models are exclusive for the Asian market except Japan.
Tomica is recognized as expensive in Japan, but is more popular than hot wheel fictitious vehicles. However, there is also a recognition that the actual vehicle of the hot wheel is better However, some enthusiasts buy hot wheels and ordinary families can buy Tomica for their children. Excuse me for Google Translate
Tomica has been at my local Wal-Marts in Canada for the past month. I was surprised. Only ones I haven't found yet is the BR-Z and the GT-R. There was also a Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi Outlander. There were two models I passes but I don't remember what they were. The easiest way I found to open these Tomica boxes is by squeezing the sizes and pulling them apart. John, if you pass on our comments. I want to say for them to keep doing regular every cars. Leave the sports cars for their premium line. I'd also love if they could do some classic cars for this basic line.
Hi John. Apparently these new Tomica cars are starting to show up here in NZ now at the moment too! I haven't come across them myself yet but they are priced at NZ$9.00 (US$5.76). Based on your experience cracking them open I think the packaging looks excessive - maybe it even adds to the shipping carton dimensions, making them more expensive to distribute? It'll be interesting to see how well they sell though, and what castings are released in each mix.
Tomica premium would do better in the USA imo. The basic are overpriced, I rather buy autoworld or matchbox for about the same price. Great unboxing tho 👍!
I hope they stay forever!; really enjoy walking into the aisle seeing them hang amongst all the other toy models. Would definitely like to see a porsche 911 made. So far I have the brz, gtr, and isuzu giga. Also going around to various wal-marts in a day, I've seen the prius and mazda left on pegs. I'm guilty myself for passing lol, but eventually I'll warm up to getting them too.
Yes I see them at Walmart but never looked at them so priced high, but look cool , thanks for the background on the company and the chase hunts. Thanks again.
I can see some interest on these, but Matchbox already does a great job for the price of what Tomica could potentially offer on their basic line. These are slightly crisper in detail, but at the five dollars it's competing to the Car Culture line up. The closest I'd say these compare to is either the two dollar moving parts Matchbox and the three-four dollar Globe Travelers. Casting detail and wheels at this point become a toss up, but the only way I'd choose Tomica over the Matchbox releases would be for specific castings and the vintage wheels over the terrible 4 spoke modern ones.
I’m not a huge fan of Tomicas wheels, but I usually get anything they make that hotwheels doesn’t. Example the Lotus 3-Eleven. I will be getting that BRZ for sure.
Hoping my local Wal Mart starts to carry Tomica. Just received a No. 26 Mazda Roadster/MX-5, it's awesome. Direct from Japan, boxed with plastic wrapper for the car- received in less than 2 weeks. Used to buy Tomica as "Pocket Cars" back in the late 70's into the 1980's. Wished I had saved any and all of them!
Love those classic models. Those old-style Tomica wheels are just right for that Kenmeri and Civic and works also as well as newer "basic" cars like CX5 and Swift.
You are right, they look like toys. They are somewhat disproportional. At their price I don't think they will be popular. We should get Tomica Limited Vintage here.
@@johnspicer9534 The Tomica basic line is not proportional. Not even close to even Hot Wheels. Hot Wheels which is not a favourite have crisper edges and much better proportion.
Tomicas were my first diecast cars and my parents made me choose what car so I chose the best (which is the no.54 honda civic type r FD) and its the best diecast brand for a budget.
Tomica boxes in Asia are a bit different than in Walmart. It has contact info to Takara Tomy in Japanese. It’s also much cheaper in Asia and in Hong Kong it’s about 26-30 HKD (about 3.35-3.86 USD). Also, in Asia they pack it in the box in a plastic bag and before 2020 they used to have slips that introduce this month’s and reveal next month’s tomica. However, it’s still very nice seeing them appear in Walmart.
There is a nostalgia factor for Tomica especially for those of us who are familiar with the brand for decades. New time buyers may not find that because of the price.
The problem with Tomica isn't the build quality or the basic wheels, it's their price. Basic cars which sell for $5 won't sit well with collectors who can get a premium Car Culture Hot Wheel car for $5.5 or an Autoworld for the same price. Parents will probably just ignore them for the same reason and will stick to the $1 Hot Wheels or Matchbox models. Personally, i only get models from Tomica basics whch i can't find anywhere else. The old Tomicas rock though. Thanks for the showcase.
TOMICA makes quality vehicles ...hope they (WALFART) continue with the line .I have many vintage one's ...the biggest issue ...the CDN PRICE 7.00 ...but still very cool … really hope more trucks show up ...yes WELL MADE ..
Tomica makes nice vehicles. Only gripe are those wheels. Tomy need to do something about them soon. I recently purchased around 35 different vehicle models from a Japanese site and at some good price point. However, the customs later ruined the bargain prices I had got them for. 5$ is definitely expensive for toy cars. However, they are good future collector items like the yellow color Suzuki Swift shown in the video.
Some weird choices for the first 6 cars released. Also not a fan of the wheels on the standard Tomica cars. Although the Nissan GT-R doesn’t look too bad. Would be nice if they start sending the premiums or the Limited Vintage cars. I have that premium Testarossa and it’s pretty nice
I bought 2 when I saw them today. They look nice. I like the detail and the lights. I don’t like the wheels on the models I found at Walmart. I don’t know a lot about them. Maybe there are other lines with better wheels.
I'm probably gonna get all of them except for the CX-5. Matchbox made a better CX-5. Hopefully Majorette will come back. I sadly missed on the TRU exclusives back in 2017. I also hope that the Welly Autotime Collection comes to the US. They make UAZ and Lada diecast which are brands exclusive to Russia
I would like some classic and retro cars. Definitely the Black A70 and the Blue MR2 Event models or any other Event/ special models. I think Tomica Premium would of been a better choice since they are basically regular Tomica (they function the same) but better (prototypical wheels for example) plus they have more classic cars. but yeah the price might be a deterrent.

I'm not too sure about them, I bought the BRZ and might pick up the skyline, not a big fan of them right now. It is cool the doors open they just seem kind of cheap. A while ago Tomica released. A 1978 Oldsmobile Toronado XSR. And I think they should re-issue this casting. As a part of the Tomica Limited Vintage Series.
They look somewhat good but I honestly think that for the price they should have better wheels. If the price is $4.99 in the US its probably gonna be around $6 over here in Puerto Rico and thats a no buy for me. Much rather buy hot wheels premium models for that price.

Damn scalpers dont even leave empty boxes to give one hope in finding them
Definitely not worth $5...the wheels on the BRZ are hideous.
At least the doors open
For Examle,here in Germany a Siku is 5€ = $5,55, a Majorette is 4€ = $4,45, a Hot Wheels or Matchbox is about $2.
I agree. They look just like the majorettes....which are ok but nothing special...
I LL000VE BRZ
@@Anth230 nah, they definitely look a lot better than majoreetes, which suck ass, but yeah they don't even appear that great. Some are good some are not.
I have a few Tomy Pocket cars. I think they are the same.
I’m so happy, because I don’t need to travel to japan.
What's the story on that orange GTO in the background?
what version is in the box ?
Series 3 is now out .
Found these at Walmart last week. Strange mix.
Of coarse we get the worst ones! I havn't picked any up! He G say the better ones I would gladly buy them!
I'm so buying the Tomica diecast at walmart
Love the profile pic bruh
I think that Schuco cars are most detailed in 1/64
A while ago Tomica released.
You got it my man. Same here in Canada
Please come to my country
Please!
they just need a wheel swap and become premium :D
WOW 😮👍👍
