When selling large soft items like blankets or cushions, consider vacuum sealing for shipping. Vac seal bags are usually available at the discount shop.

After I inherited my moms sewing machine I taught myself how to sew and have since been making zippered pouches, pillow cases, dried lavender flower pillows and eye pillows/ice packs, but always to give as gifts. Only until recently have I been told that I should sell them. I will sleep on it, but thank you for the inspiration and motivation! 😍

I have 2 active Etsy shops and am just about to open my 3rd and I LOVE it! I have the freedom to be with my kids when they need me and I can work late at night when they are asleep. I make more money working part time than I did working as a medical assistant! And now I get paid to give lectures at libraries on how to open and run an Etsy shop and they pay me for my time...who knew?!

I have never made anything to sell, but I have been making gifts for over 35 years! One year I bought these adorable plaster nativity sets that I hand painted. I kept a few sets, and now my sons use them at Christmas time with my grandchildren. I also loved making placemat purses and Bible totes using cute handles from the craft store. And, of course I have sewn for years making clothes, napkins, placemats, blankets etc. I guess it may be time for me to try my hand at selling? Thank you so much for the inspiration to start crafting!

These are very good ideas. As a retired woman raising my granddaughter any of these will help supplement income as social security isn’t anything to try to live on. I have crafted for 25+ years but stopped when we adopted my 6 month old granddaughter. As she approaches full time school I’ll have more time to devote to crafting again. Love all these ideas. Also, these ideas give moms such an opportunity to stay at home. Hugs 🤗

There are some great ideas here, just be mindful of such considerations as costs of goods (including shipping materials) versus ROI, storage and shelf-life, and especially legalities of homemade skincare and makeup. Cheers, Ardith

You have provided wonderful information to help me jumpstart my vision to someday have my own booth to sell items. I learned to macrame years ago and loved it, so will resume it. The other thing I would like to perfect is flipping furniture. I enjoy sewing, so pillows are easy to make and will pursue that. The one item I really took interest in was the thick yarn throws, and Will definitely be looking at your tutorial. Thank you for sharing all of these great ideas. 😊

i've been making soap and skin care products and candles since 1999. there is so much to learn about making said products and the industry standards, regulations, and pricing, its not something one just starts doing. you have to test your products (especially skin care) for many months to know what it will do over a length of time. so many people grab a recipe off of pinterest and then purchase a booth and go for it. this is so dangerous. licenses and insurance are a must for most. and so many underprice their products that not only will they not make a profit by the time it is said and done, but it messes with the whole industry. signs.... yea, i see a ton of those at markets anymore too. my advice, check out a show before signing up to participate. also, check to see how many like vendors they allow. too many selling the same thing dilutes the market and makes it impossible for anyone to have a good show. a good promoter is interested in supporting their vendors, not just filling spaces.

    • @michaelheery7427

      Exactly.
I live in rural farm area . They do not buy certain products.
But go 50 miles away and its no problem .

I had a friend make a blanket for me but they live in another state. The blanket was bulky so the shipping was alot. So she put the blanket in a space bag and vacummed it down and it was able to fit in smaller USPS box and cheaper shipping. You can get knock off space bags cheap. Just a thought.

I had made and sold floral wreaths and swags almost 30 years ago. I actually had a friend that gave my items to her mother to put in craft shows and shops in a little town known for being a great place to stop and shop. My co-workers and boss during that time asked for custom orders choosing the type of flowers and combinations of colors. It was a creative outlet for me before I had children. The number one mistake was pricing items too low. I basically charged co-workers for materials plus a couple of dollars. The things that sold in those craft fairs/shop were repriced by the lady selling them and I was amazed by what she charged and the fact that they sold. I made ornaments and home decor items to sell at Church sales as well. I did not make much there, but it was fun to stage a table and play for a day or two. I have not sold items for a very long time. I mostly have given handmade items as gifts. I love the ideas!

Great video! I've been selling printable party decor on Etsy for awhile now, but currently I'm working on adding physical products. I'm making eco-friendly party supplies (re-usable banners & decor, eco-friendly goodie bag fillers). It's nice to hear advice from a fellow Canadian! One of the hardest things I find is the cost of materials and the cost of shipping. Most of my competition is in the US and things tend to be cheaper for them.

I don’t sew, but if someone does, doing outdoor furniture cushions, or even zippered slip covers (washable) for those cushions would be awesome! I know SO MANY PEOPLE, including myself, who wish we could buy these from someone who makes them.

I have a sewing business for this very reason! So many people need it. I teach it as well.

This is an excellent video. I have been wanting to make and sell crafts for a while. I have been trying to make candles and wax melts but essential oils take a lot to scent soy wax. I am thinking about wreaths, floral arrangements or glassware.
