When you are installing the seal, the proper procedure to install it while driving it in is to do it dry without gear lube as it will not sit properly. I guarantee it will start leaking again. I have done a ton of these on 3/4 and 1 tons. You want the area above the bearing where the seal is installed to be dry. Clean the area with brake or carb cleaner before driving it in or the heat from the bearings expanding will cause it to leak again. Just a helpful heads up. Just did this on my 2000 k3500. I used wood to get the new seal In place. Never done a job like this before, but it wasn’t too bad! Cleaned up the drum brakes too.
I'm a retired or just tired mechanic, I found if u used the right combination of swear words, as u do your thing the job goes together better, I have a 14 bolt rear end, mine doesn't have a key or an ring, mine has the tabbed washer instead. And yes I had to buy a 6 pin socket to tighten the adjuster and lock nut, at Autozone $21.00. Nice Video. Thanks.

I got to your channel from Eric Os, Just something to check if you haven't already. When the pinion seal and wheel seal are both leaking,I would remove the vent hose and the vent filter and blow it out with compressed air,also where the fitting goes into the big 11.5 rear axle on the Duramax /8.1 and 1 tons, rust and crap build up and plug the vent hole,this pressurizes the rear axle when towing or running hard causes it to heat up,and blow the weakest seals out. sometimes they've been plugged so solid I've had to run a drill bit down and clean them out. I maintain a fleet of chevy/GMC pickups at work and a few of our 1 tons that are over 10 yrs have had the vent plug up ,I now check them as part of the pm every few oil changes,it's easier than replacing blown seals.

I have to replace the backing plates on mine, and the e-brake shoes. I assume I have to follow this entire process to do that right? The axle seals need to be replaced if you remove the hub? And how exactly does the backing plate come off? Thanks for the excellent video

Good morning Mike. I'm glad you did this video. If my one ton dually develops a leak I'll know what I'm getting into. I think they'd be the same? I better order that tool! You do what you have to, like you said, the nut should be fine. Love the Snap-on torque wrench! I noticed on my truck the harmonic balancer is a low torque then finish the torque in degrees. I guess I need another tool. :)
+wyattoneable That was actually easy compared to what I am running into with the pinion seal! Even more tools! maybe I should have taken it to the dealer to do the pinion seal? Nahhhhh! $400 in new tools I will have it fixed I hope.

Hello Mike! I struggled for days trying to figure out why I could not put my hub back on axle until I saw your video on how to replace rear seal. When you removed the hub, part of the rings from the seal were still on the axle. I did not notice this but it helped me. I also noticed you used special tool called the slide hammer to remove seal ring. I went to rent that tool and noticed the fitting will not go thru or behind the seal ring. I pulled one piece of ring off but the other piece is still in and could not use slide hammer. What other tool is best to use? This video is big help. I really like your snap on torque wrench, and appreciated.
Thanks for watching. Some mechanics will use a grinder and split the seal so you can get a punch in the slit and pry the seal off. Just make sure you don't cut into the hub doing this. Others will just try to get a pry under the lip of the seal and work it off. Best of luck.
Well...thanks for the video...gonna be doing my 2004 2500 HD this week. Both sides. Only problem I see is that when your camera ran out of power, that's probably exactly when I would need to know what else to do. My life.... I assume you were able to get the hub started and then used the special nut to tighten it in there?????
Sorry thought I explained that. I put the hub on and then pounded it a bit with a block of wood and hammer then tightend the nut up until it got tight and then hammered some more on the hub, kept alternating between doing that until the hub was all the way on hope that helps.
Good videos, I just have one complaint. Your American Flag in the background is hung backwards. The Field (blue area) Is always top left from a public view. Other than that keep putting the videos out, they are great.
+Andy Kiser I have said to other comments it is a decrative flag. When hung the "proper" way the motorcycle is backwards. So it is not an actual American flag. Hope that helps and also I have since hung it a different way.
Hey Brother Man…… is this truck on a lift? I couldn’t see if there was a Jack under the differential. I started freakin’ out when the truck was rocking pretty badly when you were fighting the caliper bracket bolt and gave the appearance of no safety Jack stands……OMG!!!

Sorry I thought I replied to this. It was an Autel DS 708. I have since bought a Launch x431 pro that I really like. Eric O. likes his Autel. I think his is an Autel MS906 scanner. Hope this helps.
I saw you put gear lube on the seal before installing the hub. Every other video I saw they put it on dry. What would you think about using silicone seal? Since it's a 2 piece seal and doesn't rotate on that surface, it would lubricate the install then add extra sealant.
well I have used needle nose pliers or a magnet and it has always came out. Hemostats would also do it. Not sure what else would work if that doesn't do it.

use a small floor jack to lift on the power handle
if you put the seal on the hub and use a flat piece of metal you can tap the seal in place

what else can be used to get that little key out its become quite the pain

We're did you find the axel socket
I bought one from Amazon but the fit of it leaves a bit to be desired. You actually have to file the teeth down a bit to make it fit in the nut.
Sounds good. I've been having trouble with my axel seal and I think the socket will help the problem
