  • In this video we answer the most asked question throughout the boat refit. Which is „How much does it cost?“
    We tell you how much we paid for the ship, what we pay for berthing, the maintenance costs and all our expenses for the refit.
    Flying Coney is an 82ft long historic steel ship. And we bring her back to live as the beautiful sailing ship she once was.
    When we are done with the refit we want to sail the ocean and teach traditional sailing skills to young people.

    Well done to you both,as a well retired marine engineer Having spent many years repairing ship’s machinery as well as serving at sea I can appreciate the work that you are doing and the frustrations that come with it.I watch several boat reconstruction and sailing channels,but you are the only ones that have explained how costs are accumulated.Thank you,as always I will be following your informative and entertaining channel to its conclusion.cheers Roly🇬🇧.

      Thank you for following along. As said at the end of the video we don't really have a cost problem, but some sort of TH-cam bug hit us and every video is underperforming at the moment. Most of the other boat reconstructions have at least 4 times more subscribers most of them 10 times more patrons. Doesn't feel good at the moment to be honest. But again thank's for following and commenting, it kind of keeps us going.

      I see it that way that refining such a boat isn't what you see everyday. There's no way to check how much it costs to do so. Also videos like that usually perform very well on the platform. But unfortunately this video is underperforming again. Even worse than the previous 5 videos that were also underperforming. Slowly getting to a point were I have no clue what video will get us going again.

      Even as a motor vessel we can go out at harbor festivals and since we have that efficient engine it makes sense. Half a day out is about 70€ here in Northern Europe. We've a capacity of 12. We're really only expecting TH-cam to pay for the work we put into TH-cam. Otherwise it would make more sense to push towards a usable boat without filming everything.

    A great update. We have spent similar getting Stella Maris to a good standard and we are also reliant on only the income we generate from our regular jobs, so things take time. I can’t wait to see how you progress with the interior and how you determine the right rig for sailing. One way we save on marina costs is by having very good ground tackle. We have tested this and are confident we can spend much more time at anchor than paying for marinas.

    Regarding the pump, the inlet and discharge orientations suggest this may be a self priming pump (providing the pump has been filled with water before operation) which is an extremely useful feature as the pump can, if necessary, be mounted above the water level without the need for an inlet non return valve or a priming system. Also it looks like it may be manufactured from a marine grade material such as zinc free bronze. Also it looks like it may be a relatively slow speed pump which gives high levels of durability and relibility. If I am correct on any one or all of these points this is a very valuable pump. The long radius bend in the inlet pipe is good practice for a top entry pump, never have restrictions or short radius bends in your inlet piping. With any 3 phase driven pump check the direction of rotation is correct. Set the motor overload to about 10% above the maximum current the motor draws with the pump at full load. With this design power demand is proportional to flow, the lower the pump discharge pressure is the higher the flow and power. If there is not enough back pressure on the discharge the pump will not prime and it will likely cavitate. If you can identify the pump brand and model and find a performance curve for the pump and advise the rotational speed I can assist with the correct application of the pump. If you find it doesnt pump try filling it with water, have the intake system fully open and strum boxes etc clear then close the discharge valve down to about 5% open start the pump and run it until discharge pressure builds before gradually open the discharge valve. Vacuum leaks in inlet piping can be identified by wrapping cling film over one piping joint at a time to isolate problematic joints. Regards and good luck. Doug from New Zealand.

    • @FlyingConey
      @FlyingConey  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Doug, the pump is from the brand SiHi and they still make this kind of pumps. They are high quality and high output and I think you're correct that it's a self priming pump. A viewer who works in a company that does service pumps (how convenient) was willing to help us and took on this project. Actually this week he opened it and gave it a good service. The pump is still in good shape and it just needed the ordinary service parts like gaskets and one bearing. Also the electric motor is working fine. He painted it in the correct color so it does look like new. Thank you for offering help and advice! It's always appreciated by us.

    what about the estimates for a complete new sailing/rigging plan, accomodations and modern day comfort equipment, the complete rebuild of the interior, nav systems, refrigeration, AC, watermaking, water heating, energy powerplants, ) you have a good main engine, but then a generator, high output alternators, solar panels, batteries, DC and AC systems, the list is "endless".

    • @FlyingConey
      @FlyingConey  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Kind of endless. But you don't need it all at once. There's just so much time we can spend refining this boat so 20-25 000€ per year is a good number. 3-5 years until we're finished. A basic rig at the END of the project will cost about 80 000€ but maybe we find masts, booms and so on second hand.

    You probably made some plans that you don't have to do other work that would take time from the boat project. The budget is probably still good while you can also pay 120k on a same size boat as Flying Coney. So if you cold finish up for 120k it would be perfect. To be honest our biggest concern is TH-cam at the moment. With a steady income it's no problem to complete the refit. Most project boats here on TH-cam, Yaba, Tall Ho, Sarinda were in much worse condition than our boat. Knowing what we know now we've probably chosen a different path in live. But then again the good thing about our project is that we're not that far away from a 100 square meter movable houseboat.

      Worst case we planned on spending about 120k for the kasko and including the upcoming frame repairs we will end up there. It was always planned to replace the interior and to do everything step by step. 30-35 000 a year is a reasonable budget for the upcoming years in the refit. But if you look at pretty much every other refit project here on TH-cam you get a rough imagination what we thought that our income will be. Not thinking about Leo here but about Ship Happens and Yaba...

      Yes we had a surveyor who spent a few hours checking the boat and discussing with us the condition. The technical equipment is in relatively good shape, some of the equipment is even new like the steering pumps. Other like the engine do have a little maintenance backlog but not many hours on the clock. Not much work needed to get it back into shape.

      After taxes? Since we do pay quite a lot for health insurance I took the numbers before taxes. And even if you calculate with 1500 per person we loose about 2k a month. But I don't want to complain if our channel would have similar numbers to every other refit channel here on TH-cam it wouldn't be an issue. I don't care about money as long as there's enough to make a living.

      Thanks for liking and commenting. Many people decided to donate after seeing this video. That's fantastic and we're really grateful for that. Each contribution even a nice comment helps.
      Our problem isn't that the people who are already watching us are not generous enough. It's more that TH-cam is showing our content to less and less people. 5 times in a row now we have the worst performing video. I'm almost sure we've been hit by some algorithm bug and have to hope that it will fix itself. But we keep going for at least six more months. Let's hope we gain back some momentum so we can continue making the videos. And yes, each like helps 😉

      We already have the name and we try to get it on the bow as soon as possible. The problem is that we want to paint the bulwark first and therefore we need to do some grinding. Something we're not allowed to do in the harbor we are. It's not always easy and sometimes improvised things can last for a very long time.

    This story is a wonderful example of the importance of a proper survey prior to purchase. Not sure why they did this video without saying that this is how much it has cost them to get to this point completely devoid of an interior. Great video but a bit misleading.... or incomplete maybe?

    • @FlyingConey
      @FlyingConey  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's the cost breakdown of a refit project. How much we've paid. This channel is about bringing and historic trawler back into shape. What you say about a survey is true about a boat in operational condition. It's essential that negotiating is possible. We paid the scrap value so it was take it our leave it. We knew that we had to rebuild the interior, we knew that we had to overhaul the engine and we knew that we have to add a sailing rig. If you don't want to deal with the problems a project boat confronts you with, don't buy one. Simple.

      @@FlyingConey I guess from my prospective something of that nature (restoration) is a labor of love and that's great, totally goes with what you are saying. Where it goes wrong for me is when you are doing as a business venture i the way you are, scrap or not the cost to repair must be factored into the business plan or expenses.
      While I've never restored a boat I have restore a handful of houses but more over I've successfully started and sold 48 businesses so this part I'm comfortable saying I know something.
      Pulling the boat for inspection would have made you aware of the needed hull repairs so it could have been considered. Factoring information like that is ultimately important especially when the cost run such a high percent of the initial costs as in your case.
      From a restoration perspective I agree with you, from a business perspective I do not.

    Don't understand these people always asking the money questions. Feel the need to judge their life choices? What it is to you what something costs? Looking for arguments why they should not have bought the vessel? Think these people are old enough to know what they are getting themselves into. In previous episodes the cost element already came to the table. What about enjoying the work to be done? Wat about enjoying the dreams that come when thinking about when all is done and the legacy ship is given a new life? As far as I am concerned a priceless experience. Sure one can make some wrong choices in life. Well, when it comes to it, cheers to the lessons learned. Great work guys, just keep puching forward, you'll get there!

    While I think your content is more valuable than these jumping around cray cray tiktok videos (that are making tons of money), saying you should make minimum wage is a bit of a fallacy. You are self employed and use TH-cam as a platform and only the audience decides your worth (via watching and consuming ads). You expose yourself to the market and the market decides your worth. As a self employed person, minimum wage does not apply because no one can protect you from yourself. Additionally, working full time on a hobby project and getting paid (even if the amount is just 700€) is a big privilege to have. I enjoyed the video exactly until this point. If it does not work out for you, work in a normal job but don't blame your audience. That is really a bad vibe

    • @FlyingConey
      @FlyingConey  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We don't blame to audience. I think most of our viewers are very loyal and having 30 000 follower is a great thing. Also many decided to become Patrons. So that's why we keep making videos but are we not allowed to tell you the truth? That it is way harder to make a living with TH-cam than most people think? Also there's a lot of uncertainty with the TH-cam Algorithm. This particular video was underperforming the whole time, now it's getting traction. Wasn't it a good video in the first place? We have now double the monthly views compared with a few months ago but the add revenue is actually less. The algorithm also decides who sees the thumbnail of the video, for example we do have a slightly older audience than most other channels. Again, it's our choice to share the project even if it doesn't make sense economically speaking. It's our choice to express our view on the financial side of it. We're also offering quite a lot on Patreon for those who want to get more involved. It's your choice to watch, comment or even support.

    Build an entire boat frame using 1/2 and 1 inch pvc pipe, fittings primer and glue. Once its all formed together then panel all the spacings between the pipe's ribs with 4 x 8 sheets of 1 inch Foil Backed Insulation Panels by punching holes and tying them with wood-strips and string to the Pvc Pipe.
    Now purchase two barrels of Polyester Fiberglass Resin and hardener and purchase enough Matte Cloth to cover both the inside and outside with four layers of fiberglass. Then add in an interior.
    For a 150 ft x 25 ft Yacht or Ship you would never go over $12,000 Pounds or Dollars. And its New. Now add the Engine from that rust bucket and get rid of it.

  • @Chr.U.Cas2216
    @Chr.U.Cas2216 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Seriously? Paying 68.000 € for a worn out unsafe rust bucket is reasonable??? Good heavens! 😱🙈

    • @FlyingConey
      @FlyingConey  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes it was a reasonable price and you hardly find a steel vessel of that size below that. Let alone one with a safety certificate. The current value of the prop, gearbox and engine is about 30 000€. I tried my best to explain the issue with the CVO, without it you're not allowed to move a boat under own power. So the CVO alone is worth quite a lot.
      The previous owner destroyed quite a lot by wrongly re- wiring the boat. We didn't knew that and he's a ship mechanic by trade. So we believed in his skills. That was a mistake.

      Even in wartimes there was always empathy in between sailors. There was always an understanding that politicians are far away on land and the guy on that other ship does exactly what you do. So having that in mind our thoughts are with the civilians in Israel and in Gaza. But our project is per definition not political.
