  • Big Wave surfer, YETI athlete, and Momentum Generation icon Shane Dorian joins the podcast to talk about the upcoming Billabong Pro Pipeline. He makes his predictions for the Pipe event and talks about the major storylines going into the Championship Tour season: a shakeup on the women’s side with young surfers like Molly Picklum and Caity Simmers, Gabriel Medina’s huge return, John John Florence surfing at 100%, and the young stars ready to make their move. He looks back at how his career in surfing has progressed over the decades, from starting out in Kona, Hawaii, doing Taylor Steele movies, surfing on the CT, switching his focus to big wave surfing, and now moving on to coaching his son Jackson and other talented young surfers. Shane also describes his work with YETI and how the brand fits his new passion for bow hunting and archery, looks at the Pipeline forecast, discusses the impact of social media on surfing, and explores Kelly Slater’s dominance.

This was a nice reminder to me to surf more. I'm about Shane's age and I don't surf as much as I used to. Mainly due to a wonky shoulder. When I was younger it was about getting a ton of waves and grappling for more and more. About a year or so ago I surfed 70 days in a row. Usually at sun rise. I'd put my wetsuit on at my house and drive to the beach. I was going to surf no matter what. Many times I caught 2-3 waves. But I got a lot more out of it because I was in the ocean. Being in nature brought me joy versus having to get the best wave or have a great session to be content. Thanks Shane and Dave!

Enjoyed this interview lots, mahalo! Loved getting this surfing history catchup … as I surfed 60’s NS, going Waialua High too … and declared surfing too crowded by 1971 😂… so went to Alta Utah to learn how to ski living a mountain life. Now happy living in Kona at 73 … the kid in me sooo wants to surf NS again … lost my mind but not my passion and so grateful I grew up surfing.
