- I know you are probably making "Little Shop of Horrors" jokes in your head right now about man-eating plants, but this was one of the coolest interviews I have ever done.
We discuss growing some of the best carnivorous plants for fun and profit. Why Venus Flytraps are being wiped out by poachers to make an anti-cancer carnivora tincture.
We share the easiest and best carnivorous plants to propagate. We spotlight sundews, venus flytraps and pitcher plants. We also show you how to keep a terrarium for pitcher plants and sundews. Cool knowledge to know for off grid living.

When I was on vacation in New Brunswick Canada, I did a hike in a bog (it had wooden walk ways built in the bog) and there were millions of sundews there.
Fantastic interview! I enjoyed every part of it.
Very interesting, most of that was new to me. Thanks for sharing.
Slowvannah Farms I bet they might grow pretty good in Savannah. Good profit in them if you sell it to the companies that make Carnivora.
+Dr. Tarrin P Lupo they need a marshy area to grow in and I think the savanna would be to dry
I'm on my second attempt at growing a venus flytrap. The first one I killed with tap water. Now I use purified water or rain water and it's doing well. I have been feeding the traps with meal worms and they seem to like those.
Gotta be careful with purified water though. What kills them is the minerals and metals in the water. Purified water often adds minerals for taste. Your best bet is rain water or distilled. Supposedly reverse-osmosis works too, but I have never used it myself, so I cannot confirm this.
Great video, and lots of fantastic close-up shots. I've had flytraps in the past, and they all died of black rot. Great tips about what type of sand and soil to use. I was using the wrong kind of sand, and wasn't using rainwater (just distilled water.) I learned a ton, thanks!
KATE P I thought it was normal for them to turn black? why do they?
@@blackpage716 it is normal traps die not the plant or they are going dormant
Mine is a baby and its trap has a black dot. What to do?
Definitely trying to grow a sundew next summer
wow!!!! now I have a new project. I have a palm tree in my front yard so I took some seeds that were on it last year and put them in the spagness peat moss and have kept them there so far for 4 months waiting for them to ferment to try and grow my own palm trees. So far, no luck. I am going to try these plants now. Wish me luck. Thank you Dr. Tarrin!!!!
Let me know how it goes.
You will get addicted!
Thank you for sharing information on carnivorous plants. I Enjoyed your video and I will be following you for more info. These plants are amazing. I am working on a carnivorous terrarium. We have to save them from development and poachers.
Thanks for the video. enjoyed very much
Very informative. I also like Lexi! :) I've got a Daddy Longleggs infestation. I've been told Essential Pepperment mixed with water and sprayed would deter spiders. I probably need to grow Venus Flytraps outside the house. Bet that would work even better! :)
great video,I'm new sub, thanks for share, btw, love your Lexi, she so cute & clean!
Thanks so much for subbing and checking out Lexi.
Just grow a big pot of them, and every year just take the divisions and sell them. 5$ for a small, 10$ for a medium, and 15$ for a large specimen(this is just for typicals btw, it can vary depending on variety and cultivar).
thanks for the information I didn't know you could sell them too I can't wait until it gets warm in Kentucky
Could luck, I hope you do it.
Thank you very interesting!!!
Great video! Thanks for sharing. I just bought some pitcher plants and Venus fly traps. I've been growing them since I was a kid and I'm 31 now. I love my passion for gardening and love growing all different kinds of plants and produce.
That sounds nice, Very cool you are doing good with them.
@@TarrinLupo yes.. thank you! I love these carnivorous plants so much!
From my trial and error with my Venus Fly Trap, I discovered that Carpenter Ants and some other random ants I tried, actually burned spots on the traps and killed the traps (completely dehydrated dead round brown spots). I also discovered that House Flies don't seem to be very nutritious and it only takes a few days for the plant to digest. However, I re-hydrated Beta Fish Food freeze-dried Blood Worms and the traps stay closed for 1-2 weeks or so. From this conclusion, I think that blood worms are one of the best foods for venus fly traps. To feed them, I put some in a water bottle lid or some other small bowl shaped surface, add just enough water to hydrate them, let it sit for a little while, sometimes i lightly press down on the worms and release a few times, to try to ensure they are fully saturated with water, then i use a toothpick and snag some of it, and put it in a trap and wiggle it around to ensure the trap closes all the way, even lightly touching the outside of the trap with my finger. Be careful to not be too rough with the traps because they don't show damage right away, but can show signs of damage several days later.
Thanks so much for sharing xxx
Ants have an acid called Formic acid. It is not good for anything living
Vft traps open more than once. I have some that have caught 4 insects separately.
Thanks for helping me
Thank you
I need to get a goose. I have too many electronics just lying around my house :p
Geese are evil!
loooove the goose
Is it possible to harvest seeds from the carnivorous plant flower?
Yes
I'm pretty sure that's what flowers are for
A guard goose?! Whaaaaat? 😂
Good basic information.
Can you do a video on how to transport a new growth from a venus fly trap into a new pot to sell?
I'm growing these plants as a hobby, I want all kinds. But some may not grow well in the Florida heat.
You have to love Lexy lol now I want a plant and a goose :)
Lol it was adorable :)
very interesting
Great video and lovely goose. Can these grow in the Caribbean?
4:40 Nice dinosaur :D
I plan to do this soon
Man I want ONE
(Hell all of them)!
Twelve o'clock at midnight or noon? Also, why does the pink flower only bloom for fifteen minutes? I'm very interested in Sundews but have no idea where to purchase one.
where do you get Venus flytraps at and how much
How do I buy a plant from him??
Hello, I want to ask you : D
How the Wild Venus Flytrap can live in the wild where the soil media has never been replaced, while those of us who maintain it should be advised to replace the soil media. Do we also not need to change the planting media or not?
Came for carnivorous plant care, stayed for the goose.
can i plant it in egypt
こんな暮らししてみたい…😂😂
Honestly, id rename this video to "how pitcher, sundew, venus, etc. carnivorous plants survive + their history" or "detailed info of carnivorous plants for horticulture students"
Like the video for Lexy!
I have well water. An old rock well. Would that be ok?
No
I have a venus flytrap that used to do well. But the traps are turning brown and dying. Is this because summer is comming to a close or because its too dry?
How much are you watering it?
I watered them a little. Since the comment I have replanted them, and 5 of the 12 little plants seem to be surviving. Now I spray them 2x daily. They are in semi sun.
You should place them in a pool of water and never let that pool dry out.(Use distilled water) Venus Flytraps are swamp plants so they can handle lots of water. And try to give them a minimum of 4 hours of direct sunlight. What type of soil have you planted them in?
@@hcalc1890 I took soil from my front garden (which hadn't had much water or growth in the last 3 years due to drought- so very fine sand) and I lined the containers with a coffee filter paper after most soil just ran through the pot's holes.
The winter is comming fast now. I was hoping theyd grow a bit before going dorment. If they have survived this early transplant will the leaves remain green in the winter?
do you have any plants for sale i would love to make a big garden of all types here at my house
Wate a bout winter
I just wanted to raise my sundew well, but gosh Lexi made me laugh more than the videos I typically turn to for entertainment
Can I grow them for personal use in New York city?
Yes you can. I grew them in central Massachusetts in a mini-bog planter on my back porch. When the plants go dormant in winter (late October through late April) I would bring the bog in and put it in the cellar. Just maintain an inch of water in the bogs drip tray, and ambient light from the cellar windows. TH-camrs: Brads Greenhouse has some good info, as does Sarracenia Northwest. I got my mini-bog and drip tray from California Carnivores website, and the soil from flytrapstore(dot)com.
thnk you very much sir :)
correction, saccarencia pitchers are, the rest are tropical pitchers.
Thanks for the correction.
+Dr. Tarrin P Lupo no problem.
Can the quartz have silica in it? Can you use smoky quartz? Do the pitchers and venus fly traps need humidity or just moist soil?
Points out anatomy with what I assume is a goose flower
Why don't you use RO/DI water
jadyn jones because if you have access to rain water you use it.
Is it possible to grow venous fly trap here in the Philippines?
I'm no expert but I think yes since I heard the Philippines is very Humid. Just get the right soil and water and your good with the sun.
add more videos!!!
As crazy as this sounds, there is a variety of Venus fly trap that grows near the swamps in Sterling, Alaska.
Did not know that, cool.
WnC Martin no they only grow in a 50 mile radius in north/South Carolina. Thats it. No where else and temps below 20 for too long would kill them.
WnC Martin there is also only one species of fly trap in the world (Dionaea muscipula) just different variety’s and no they don’t grow in Alaska.
WnC Martin your probably thinking about a sundew
WnC Martin - to my knowledge, even the Virginia claim is too cold in winter for flytraps - I certainly never witnessed any in the wild of southeast VA ( the northernmost extent of USDA Z8 in the east).
Be honest....how many of you have started to see/ think the word " Coronavirus" every time you see " Carnivorous " when looking for these videos ?????????????
Lmfao they sell these Venus fly traps at the 99 cents store here in California and they are awsome I fed mine wild roaches and my fly traps wer fat piggys and I always kept their soil acidic and I have my fly traps distilled water which they seemed to be okay with
$1.00 each? Wow, you are VERY lucky. It's $5.00 or $10.00 where I live (depending on size). For reptiles and amphibians, roaches are one of the top feeders for nutrition, so they are probably great for plants too. If you want a backup food supply, I posted a message about how I feed them Tetra Beta Fish Food (Freeze-dried blood-worms) by re-hydrating them and using a toothpick. It takes a little extra effort, since you have to simulate it being alive, but they love it. They seem very expensive for a tiny container, but 1 little 0.28oz (8 gram) container will probably be enough to last 1 plant for 200 years. The bar-code of what I use is "0 46798 16194 3".
Jonathan Corrales you're both very lucky. Where I live they're unavailable 😒
bom
I wish there was no music in the background. It’s interesting enough without that.
You mainly talk about sarracenia pitcher plants make sure to explain which one you are talking about. Sundew flowers can be other colors than pink. Sundew information wrong
Here's a weird question...What if you're growing them inside where there are no bugs? How do you feed them? What do you feed them? Do you have to hunt for them? hahaha, no seriously...do you?
*Beansie* most likely, you don’t have to do it much, once a month will be fine
8:35 it will re-open once? also, seeing how slow the traps close and how the venus flytraps look, it really looks like he is not caring for them that well at all. a lot of the information in this video is false too, but none the less, it was interesting, although time wasting to watch.
Grow and sell? More like grow and be happy
Lots of erroneous information here. Flytrap leaves open several times, usually around three times. Eventually they won't close any more. Sundews do not "curl in anticipation" of approaching insects; such a function would do them no good at all.
*Carnivorous plants get poached*
feed them on hamburger...lmao 😂😂😂😂😂
the trap can rot if you do that! better stick to flies...
His voice threw me off... but great video
I gave up at 4 minutes. this is poor.
This sounds like some Illegal shit that I want no part of
What?
@@vivimannequin What?
dont care dont care dont care
So dont watch.. lol
