Games 1-5 were played in New York (until Tuesday, April 27th); game 6 in Morristown, NJ; game 7 in Scranton, PA; game 8 in Wilkes-Barre, PA; and games 9-23 in New York resumed on Saturday, May 8. The match started on Monday, April 19th and finished by late June.
"No difficulty was experienced in arranging the match. Marshall was disposed to play in this case where he naturally discounted his victory. How far he was wrong the result proved. I beat him eight to one with fourteen draws thrown in between. I can safely say that no player ever performed such a feat, as it was my first encounter against a master, and such a master, one of the first ten in the whole world. The most surprising feature of all was the fact that I played without ever having opened a book to study the openings; in fact, had Marshall played such things as Danish Gambits, Vienna Openings, or the like, the result might have been different. I certainly should have experienced more difficulty in obtaining such a result. I had only looked an analysis of the Ruy Lopez by Lasker, on the 3...f5 defense, but the analysis was wrong, as it did not give the strongest continuation for Black. This, and whatever I knew from experience or hearsay, was all of my stock of knowledge for the match. My victory put me at once in the foremost rank among the great masters of the game. The play during the match showed that I was weak in the openings and just strong enough in the simple play for position. My great strength lay in the endgame, and I also excelled in combinations of the middlegame. I had a fine judgment as to whether a given position was won or lost, and was able to defend a difficult position as few players could, as I repeatedly demonstrated during the course of the match, in repulsing Marshall's onslaughts. I may add that my style was not as yet either definite or complete, though it had a wide range, that is, I could attack almost as well as I could defend, and could make combinations in the middlegame nearly as well as play the endings where I felt more at home and was decidedly strongest" - Capablanca in My Chess Career.

This is series is great, thanks! I discovered your channel a few weeks ago and have learned more about chess here than in a lifetime of casual play. The stories of these chess legends are especially interesting. Capablanca seems like just a pure genius from childhood (who needs opening theory?) who understands patterns in a kind-of deep way like Alpha-Zero (also doesn't have opening theory!) but he also decided endgame is most important to know. OK, so now I'm getting back into chess and may take his advise to start studying there. Marshall to me plays like a scary tactical genius with deep opening knowledge. Great matchup

@Foodie Eats Quite right. As I understand it, Capablanca claimed to be a champion of America after this match, as Cuba is an American island. He couldn't have claimed to be USA champion as he was not USA citizen.

Feel great to know about Capablanca!! Saw couple of his games before, though, it's easy ( as u said ) I'm unable to understand every move of the game ( Particularly the ideas behind the moves) then. Now for me every move seems very obvious n also his ideas r easy to remember. Now I started to implement some of ideas n strategies in my game which is very helpful...
Thanks for u effort!! Really the Capablanca saga makes me ( hope to millions of people) to understand the basics of chess clearly!

Hello Antonio. I have been watching your videos regularly for at least three months now, and I quite enjoy them. I have grown to like you as time went on, and I am concerned with the large amount of videos that you are making. It's a lot of work, and looking for all of the extra information that you pass on to us, the viewers must take a lot of time, and we appreciate it very much. I have been noticing a few mistakes in your recent videos, incorrectly naming certain pieces, and I was worried about you, thinking that you may need a break. And after you said that you didn't feel like posting a video yesterday, I decided to make this comment. You are posting so many videos so quickly, and I think that it may be too much. Please take breaks whenever you need to, it is important not to get overworked, and to watch over your health. Thank you for the amazing content, and I hope that you have a wonderful week.

Also in this video he said "Marshall wants to prevent the white king from entering" around 7th minute. (Saw this in another comment btw). Hope he's not overworking himself. I know how I myself can get lost in things I really enjoy and forget to eat and drink for hours. Oh and don't take it the wrong way, I would never blame him for naming pieces or moves wrong just thinking it's not very characteristic and hope he knows his limits:) love your work

This is a legit question and not just part of the running joke. Did the audience and FR Marshall knew about Capablancas lack of opening theory?

judging by the views, i think people aren't watching capablanca games as much as they did watch the others. or maybe its just that agad is posting many videos continously... who else thinks itll be much better if y'all had to eagerly wait for 1 video after a couple of days?... dont get me wrong though lol these videos are very entertaining and helpful

The idea that Marshall helped Capablanca to get invited to San Sebastion is most likely to enhance Capa's reputation and to make his defeat more palatable. I was a friend of the late Igor Ivanov and he told me this; that he was playing Karpov and he had a position where he knew Karpov would have to accept a draw or play on and lose! Karpov being Karpov figured Ivanov would not follow the winning idea ended up losing. To ameliorate this loss Karpov forced the Soviet Chess Union to send Ivanov along with Karpov to a tournament in Havana. Where Ivanov did well. When plane stopped to refuel in New Foundland Ivanov ran off to a policeman and claimed asylum. Igor had many stories he related to during the week he spent at my home.

Capablanca is like those UFC or MMA fighters, who go for grappling on the ground immediately, not caring much for punches or kicks.

  • @nrabinov

Capablanca's disdain of opening theory was purely because he didn't need to know any. He knew just enough to stay out of trouble, and help steer the game to the end-game where he had an undisputed advantage over most other players. In this respect Capa was quite similar to Bobby Fischer, who had contempt for players who based their game on opening traps. It's no surprise Capa was one of the few players cited by Fischer as 'great'.

Marshall looks sorta bad at openings, a monster in the middlegame but just inferior to the great Capablanca at the endgames. Capablanca was a monster.

At 11:42 and after King to g7, what if White king moves to g5 and if black rook to g3 as a response, king to g4, if rook to h3, again king to g5 ?

Is it true that Capablanca didn’t lose a competitive tournament game for 10 years? What is the longest period of going without a loss? Does Carlsen hold the record now with 22 draws in a row?

  • @joepoppy3264
