    "I remember standing in the office thinking 'It's Pictionary. What does Pictionary sound like? It sounds kind of scribbly, doesn't it. What is that?" And I went round the houses for a while thinking "What on earth can I do for Pictionary?" and then just thought "I'll just write some music and see if it fits. Or rather, not see if it fits, just write some music and make it fit."

      Mostly because he got frustrated with the video game industry as a whole. Same as most talented people, actors are frustrated that they can't negotiate contracts in a clearer way for voice roles, programmers are tired of being exploited and thrown away, writers are tired of being subjected to harsh work conditions (like it happened in Talltale Games), etc.
      Video game companies exploit their employees so much, that anyone who is talented has left the industry. And those who havent just start their own indie games development group.

      Tim Follin would write music to challenge himself at what he could do with the nes sound card. He'd write music to be good, and sometimes wouldn't care about the context of what game it was as long as the music was good. Hence why all of his work sounds both ill fitting and WAY TO GOOD for whatever game it's attached too

    Pictionary in the 80’s wasn’t the drawing charades that you’re used to today. No...
    Cage fighting. Men in suits of spiked armor bashing the skulls of the weak in gladiatorial combat. It was similar to Mad Max if men grew too strong for simple vehicles. They were powerhouses of rage, and none stronger than Pictius. The one two strong to comprehend, only known through guesses.

      Steven Vascellaro sidechained compression is basically lowering the gain/volumen of certain instruments in the exact same time the the kick or snare comes in. Take a listen to the snare, notice that the rest of the instruments lower their presence everytime it hits?

    • @Dotmaetrix
      @Dotmaetrix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +218

      I think that might actually be a side effect of the triangle channel pulling double duty. The kick and snare use both the noise and triangle channel to make the drums sound a little beefier, which means that the bassline has to be cut off for a couple of frames. This is a trick that Follin and several other NES composers like to pull a lot, because it takes less cartridge space than sampled drums, which was also a pretty popular technique

      Source? His Wikipedia page says differently - it doesn't mention him rejecting offers or not pursuing certain games at all, in fact he was desperate for solid work when freelancing that wouldn't cancel the game on him before release and cited joy in leaving that environment. He actually says he thinks his creation of soundtracks that "didn't fit the game" was because he often was asked to write them during very early stages when he didn't have lots of notes on how it should be, and he believes that this nature of his music actually cost him and prevented him from getting offers which he desired. Also, he worked several games from studios that owned the rights to Batman, Gauntlet, Bubble Bobble, and more...
