+Light Narry yeah they just can't seem to get her nationality right.
ceilingkatt Tamil is a language not a country and even tho they speak it in India she is still Sri Lankan
Light Narry Tamil Eelam is a country currently under political occupation by India and Sri Lanka since 2009 until present. #FreeTamilEelam
M.I.A. is the only artist that can show it's not only the West there is that exists... there is a whole other UNIVERSE outside of the West with so many different cultures, traditions, colors, tastes. Erasing and Euro-washing our cultures won't work, we are here after centuries of exploitation, oppression, devastation, and we are determined to be here for a long time! Thank you M.I.A.
hell yea
Aho Mitakuye Oyasin
Silent Films MIA wasn't born in the west...
Indeed, but we need to accept that all cultures will mix in the future despite the historical exploitation, oppression, devastation. Almost all the cultures get colonized by the western technologies, knowledge, and means of production or realization. For instance, this video clip was realized with a video camera who is traditionally western and it's shared on a western media. The cars in the this video were western and even the theory of music who made this song a reality is a western reform made by Catholic church at the end of medieval era. It's good to share all cultures by these means, but we need to accept the fact that they will tend to mix with the globalization of markets, the internet and means of transports.
Seha hell yeah! We sure need it too!! But, I’d argue she’s definitely not the ONLY artist fighting that good fight, she’s just the one who’s won that hard earned widespread public popularity.
This is a masterpiece in so many ways
This is too real. Mainstream will ignore it. She gets my heart though
Mainstream os si boring!!!
yea
More or less. This video is cool mainstream. Want to see the real deal? look at this th-cam.com/video/jZ572yLH9sc/w-d-xo.html
BIRD UP!!!!
Yesss 😍👌❤️
GIVE THIS GIRL A GRAMMY ASAP
Bobby Behrens “who needs a Grammy when you get the TAMMY for humanitarianism”

She was huge back in the day ,already made it dude
Grammy is a fucking joke.
Oscar!
yay!!!!! MIA this women is 40 years old. she looks and sounds amazing love her!!
+Ricki Hearns u must be joking abt her age
Naw I'm not. She's beautiful 😊
+Ricki Hearns she is
I concur!
+Ricki Hearns :O I thought u made that up lol
I have alway been impressed with M.I.A's ability to highlight the beauty and brilliance of her own culture and the culture of others'. While other artist attempt such "inspired" performances, those works end up falling flat and succumbing to cultural appropriation and Orientalist tropes. I feel that I can always count on her to make amazing, globalized music and also incredible visuals for the intersectional and cross-cultural generations.
I love her work, and her attitude. Maybe not so much as it pertains to vaccines, but....oh well.
@@kevinsager5054 She's cool. What is her take on vaccines?
@@numbersix8919 Apparently anti-vax. Unfortunately
@@kevinsager5054 Well these genetic vaccines are quite different from any previous vaccines. I don't know why more people don't talk about that. I'd prefer traditional vaccines even if they are less effective. Oh well.
Just anti Covid vax she’s done lives on Instagram talking about her stance etc she’s not against all vaccines

The sword yielding legends are from Kolhapur. I am from Kolhapur and I have been to the places shown in the video. Also, the video shows some vehicles and their number plate confirms that they shot this video in my town, Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India. I don't know what to say here. Its MIA and she was in my town. She chose Kolhapur and people to be in her videos. This is pure....
Wow, great info. This makes me love her even more
What do you call this martial art that women practice with their staffs?
@@jtstrm silambaatam from tamil nadu
I love that MIA always uses her OWN culture and brings a new perspective to hip hop, and she showcases the culture of others without ever trying to take credit/appropriate ...she gives others the opportunity to shine. MIA is that chick that everybody knows, respects, and bites. lol
Is she still restricted from travelling to the us?
@@Soulprismatics No... she was there for the release of MATA (her new album)
@@ailolan that's good to hear, I know about the new album. I stumbled upon her music due to a game's end credits.

For those who clearly don't comprehend the difference;
Appropriation is the act of taking something unique or original to a culture/region & attempting to erase their claim & history to APPROPRIATE it as something entirely one's own without attribution, context, or credit that reveals its' true nature. An example of appropriation is the use of dreadlocks which one then attributes as an "Urban" trend. It's not, it came from a specific region & people, indicative of their climate, biology, beliefs & culture. To take it & erase its' history is appropriation.
Appreciation is showcasing the culture, art, & perspective of another region, people, or country without claiming it as your own. Which is what this video does. There are no racewashed background dancers incorporating several culture's dances into a choreographed routine in some pristine studio to strobe lights & trap music. This is a sweeping showcase of real visceral art performed by those who naturally would perform them with proper context & the explicit understanding that M.I.A does not claim rights or originality.
This is healthy. Deep breaths. Enjoy the damn performances.
That would be true if profit were taken out of the equation. At this video is a part of a billion dollar industry which MIA is complicit with - and personally profits from considerably - you cannot so simply assert that there is nothing to take issue with here. If she weren't present in the video at all then I would buy this argument more...but she is still using these people as a backdrop for her video, ie her own and her record label's profit. So you take some deep breaths and think on that...
Newsflash: Paying an artist to take part in your video doesn't make said video appropriation. Artists of all cultures are allowed to showcase their skills and get paid for it without "betraying" their culture.
Unless you are from said culture, you have no right to criticizing their decisions on who to perform for. I know it must be hard to swallow, but the world doesn't revolve around Anglo-American countries. Nobody in India cares about whether you think Indians should be allowed in Western music videos or not - and I dare say most would think you horribly racist for trying to deny them that right.
Really? This woman has given way more money to actually help the poor youth in many different countries than any other rapper/popular artist I know of. Also she went to Africa, found this guy gave him some very nice gifts (as customary in most cultures) and he agreed to dance for the video.

*_"An example of appropriation is the use of dreadlocks which one then attributes as an "Urban" trend. It's not, it came from a specific region & people, indicative of their climate, biology, beliefs & culture."_*
Pretty sure dreadlocks came from multiple places, not just Greece.
words of wisdom thank you
she is unique
Like her Art is too
I keep coming back to watch MIA every time. She is just the best. Her vision is so much broader than most musicians, she always makes one think, dance and asks questions that most artists don't.
I respect her so much.
best example of cultural appreciation
Haha for a minute I thought you said appropriation and I was like "um........"
+MacCatful damn straight!

shes from sri Lanka as well
I'm pretty sure she knows.
lol
Do you have any of your singing on youtube?
who me? nope
this is underappreciated art
TRUTH!!!!!!
MIA lived in the worst time to do what she did - first years of her career were the era where any artist discussing politics was treated as crazy/vapid/self righteous in the media, and then the next years were in the 'your fave is problematic' era where if you were thoughtful and political you'd get a target on your back from the same self-appointed critics for not 'staying in your lane' or for appropriation or whatever pop-theory they could tear you down with. And yet she stayed true to her vision and changed the face of music - one of the greatest artists of our era for sure.
Interesting perspective. Thank you. I'll look up the history.
OMG broooooooo she is iconic,,,,man the way she utilised the songs and god poems.
கடவுளே என்ன ஒரு நல்ல பாடல் !!!! என்கிற மியா போன்ற பாடல்கள் வெகுமதி !!!! 😚😚😚😍😍😍
The Only One Without A Grammy,American Music Award!Your Not Over Exsposed.Your Not Over Rated.Your Just Just You M. I. A.

I find her art inspires me to create art with a message. I really like that she stuck her middle finger up during the super bowl. That IFGAF attitude is so good.
The living spirit of true hip hop.
Possibly my favorite M.I.A. music video, I love the feminine empowerment that is in the first half of this video, I want to see more of that!
This is one Helluva Woman! I can only wish my granddaughters will be this strong to stand for what's right.
Where do I sign up my daughters for swords lessons?
South India
@AngelEyes where in india are you based?

The zaouli dancer is probably my favorite part of this whole video, keep coming back for him 👀💖
Shout out to the mighty ivorian culture...and thanks you M.I.A for visiting us......zaouly dance moves are just great...
by now you should of have realize that MIA is super talented, creative and fights for the people and deserves every award... but the industry gives those awards to the more 'powerful' (money) people
the absolute coolest person ever, makes me sad that she‘s not more present. We would all benefit to stan her and her only
Some lyrics are used Sanskrit Language, the world’s first language “Sanskrit” which came from Tamil.
Love you Maya from Nepal ❤️❤️❤️
This is sick omg 🔥🔥🔥 those girls are fierce 👀💭🔥🔥🔥
What an amazing showcase of two cultural traditions. I hardly know what to call them! The girls with the swords for the first song, and the great dancing man for the second jam. Righteous.
I wish I could see you personally. With lots of love and support here from the Philippines. 😍😍😍
There is no way to take your eyes off this video

Not gonna lie when I heard the song, I couldn't really understand it, but after the video, my opinion has changed. :). I am glad for the reupload, I think this video is beautiful.
+AmiNunni it dont matter if you dont understand, you can just feel it.
much of her work ilike kinda like immigrants landing in a western country where jamaicans are and creating some kinda mash-up with them
I agree but some people don't understand
I believe in India.
Seen one of em around here with a magic wand.
Their light is other worldly.
Like an Aura made of pulsating rainbows.
The one that visited me cleansed my blood.
As I had work to finish....and still do.
This is what MIA does best! I would never have seen those people without her and she laid a great soundtrack for the observation. Well done historian!

Around the end of the song there was a sound that sounded like the music from my country, mali west africa and a looks like the country side of mali great music i love her, she makes music that she love and she is never follow anything!!!
Such a talented inspiring soul
One word ART
The reason her video was taking down and just now being uploaded because there were tons of hate from youtube or suppose some source from the ignorant media saying she was "appropriating" culture from South Asian ( ... yeah she is from South Asian hello, Sri Lanka!!!) and told her to now show her video( eye roll) also that she was "appropriating" West African culture, hmmm i don't see it there. But I did see That dansish singer on her video lean on and Iggy Piggy, Beyonce, Nikki Mainja, and many other artist "appropriating" culture. But since we live in a mind numb world full of zombies that let shit like this fly past them they allow it, but when a woman from that her own damn country that's located in South Asian shoots a video in South Asian that's appropriation!!! Also she is barely even in the in the video really. I am just mind boggle of such ignorance. I'm am done with America and they wonder why other countries want to bomb us.
I strongly agree >;(
These young ladies are AWESOME!!!! Would love to see more of this around the world.
Tivona Solomon Glad that you said it
Tivona Solomon and what about Devendra benhart’s carmensita? Where were these people then?
"I'm am done with America and they wonder why other countries want to bomb us.

MIA always makes fantastic videos, and finds the most amazing dancers! I'm still awed by the choreography in her old video for BOYZ!!
