JNS LED headlight on my XR650L turned out to be a really great upgrade. And then put an IMS 6 gallon tank on my Honda a clear one worked as a gas gauge. I get a lot of compliments on it. Super happy for you! Stay safe.
What kind of mpg's do you get out of your XR? (and what year is it) Last year I got to borrow an old one (1995) for some dual sport riding. Loved it. Kind of abused it drifting on gravel. In motion it felt like a big dirt bike. But I only got 104 miles out of that stock 2.8g tankful and wow did that kill the buzz. So range and economy improvements would be important.
@@suzyamerica4679 it's a 2008 XR and to be honest I'm not sure the MPGs. I also have a Dave's carb. mod on it, a Yoshimura exhaust. A friend of mine who builds bikes put some 450X forks on this thing for me. Luv it
I'm partial to Suzuki. I like KLRs, yet I would consider the DR as an upgrade! As far as bikes go, simple is best in my experience, compared to the uber-adventure bikes.
"Goes from washing machine to dirt bike" is a perfect description for the DR! That rattlely growl when you twist the throttle at speed is addictive. Great video!
It's soooo strange! I've never ridden a bike that did that. Half the time I had to remind myself that it was supposed to be like that. It's such an awful racket, I LOVE it!
I totally relate to your "I'm a dual-sport" guy comment in the vid. I'm doing sprockets and chain on a friend's '17 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R and I admire the beast but have no interest in owning one. I don't even want to do the test drive. A 650 dual-sport is as big as I want to go. So your latest additions to the fleet are right in my interest zone. Let the good times roll!!
Good, I'm glad to hear that Mike! Haha yeah, I'd like to try one on the roads or maybe some light, easy going trails. But I'm so looking forward to riding my new adds on the tougher woods trails and single track. Just can't beat a light grunty bike there!
You were one my inspirations to get my KLR, but I still enjoy your content regardless of what you are riding. I look forward to seeing where you go with the DR.
Congrats on the new DR, I was looking for a nice used one, but couldn’t find one so I purchased a 2024. Two days later my neighbor drives by on a 2011 with only 400 miles on it and it was for sale. Lol I’m excited to see what you’ve got planned for your DR. Stay safe and I really enjoy your videos.
Oh no!!! Haha. That's usually how it goes. Nothing good for sale... until you make a purchase haha. Thanks! I can't wait to see how it turns out too! Haha.
the dr wakes up alot with a 150 main jet drill the pipe out 2" hole in the air box but one of the best mods is get a 14 tooth front sprocket... makes the bike alot better off road and will still get 100mph top speed
Delkevic makes a 3.5lb full exhaust for $300 plus their $50 screen type baffle sounds nice and isn't too loud. Swapping the front fender out for the Acerbis one helps on the highway also.
Fun video. The DR weighs seventy pounds less then the KLR. There is a TH-camr ( I think Australian ) who has put a six gallon tank and done some suspension and brake mods and drove his DR many thousands of happy miles. I wish the DR had fuel injection on it. But they seem to not suffer much from carb issues. Really good bikes.
Keep the comparisons coming! I think my end goal is going to be either a DR650, KLR650, or XR650, so your direct back-to-back comparisons are really helpful.
I’ve ridden all 3 plus the KTM 690. The power of the 690 is intoxicating. Just so much fun to ride. But the next guy is just happy to plod along. To each their own.
I had a KLR650 and now have a DR650. The KLR is a more comfortable touring bike out of the box (ergos, seat and wind protection), but you can turn the DR in any kind of bike you want it to be (from supermoto to dual sport to adventure/touring bike). The DR650 is just so much more fun than the KLR650. And agree with you about the 701, if it was made by Yamaha I'd have one parked in my garage, but it's KTM...
100% agree with that! KLR is great for those who want to explore a little. The DR can explore A LOT more. Shouldn't take too many mods to make it feel pretty darn comfy on the road too. I can't wait!
That's actually one of the things I really like about the DR and the XR. They really don't have much to protect, like the KLR did. It'll be interesting to see how the first few drops go though... haha.
I like that DR, Ben! Looking forward to seeing your build on it and comparisons to the KLR and XR. Not too many folks can say they rode a KLR650, DR650 and an XR650 all in the same day! LOL
You're right. There's nothing better than a DR650. You can have all those big 500 pound bikes. The DR is the best all-rounder available and for some reason it's extremely satisfying to ride.
All three of the 650cc thumper dual sports from Japan have been compared on this channel, which is such a good resource. I can’t think of another channel where this is the case 🤟
Great content, excellent choice on the DR650. I'm very happy with my 2013 I picked up from the second owner had it all most 4 years my other bikes are hardly ridden and I've put over 4000 miles on the DR was set up as a adventure bike I'm changing it back to lite ADV/Dual sport now.
Picked up my 2008 Dr on Thursday on Saturday I went and rode over 60 miles of dirt LOL I really like that thing picked it up with lots of extras already done. Can't wait to see what you do with yours
Congrats on the DR! HC piston,Ported head, Stg 2 cam, TM40 and a full exhaust and it’s a RIPPER! Love mine and the power is amazing once on crooked. 💪🏻
There is a neutral sensor I believe it's called, behind the clutch basket it was made of plastic on my 2013 DR story is that the manufacturer did not use loctite on screws. I pulled mine apart and screws were loose like almost finger tight cleaned it up and used RED loctite and followed my mechanic buddies arm torque wrench setting, to never let those screws fall into the back of the clutch basket.
Wait... 2013?!?! I thought they started using thread locker sometime shortly after my buddy Jason's bike, an 06.... His weren't real loose but, certainly not tight. Had 3,000 miles I think?
Wait... 2013?!?! I thought they started using thread locker sometime shortly after my buddy Jason's bike, an 06.... His weren't real loose but, certainly not tight. Had 3,000 miles I think?
@@SwankyCatProductions mine had 7000 miles I just wanted to be sure screws are okay for myself, and look at clutch wear, close look at any material in the oil and take oil filter apart, thanks for your reply.
I think these Suzuki's have a niche that's so good that it draws people to them. Reliable & affordable, plenty of parts w/ no waiting like I've heard of KTM owners waiting a year for stuff. But I digress, the DR's(400/650) are simple for most to work on plus the cult following means there people all around doing stuff to their bike. After market is thru the roof, part of the culture, and for the most part it's affordable. I'm looking for a 1st bike so I'm looking at your reasons for the 650's ~ thanks for the videos
Man you are making me miss my dr. I loved that bike. I had to sell it so we could financially survive mat leave, now on a klx300 (which is great) but I miss the grunt of the dr.
Friggin awesome brother 👊 can't wait to see the comparisons and separate builds I've owned both the DR and KLR my buddy had an XR so I know all of them are so much fun
I'm so glad to hear that!!! They really are all a blast, but honestly I think everyone should at least sit on each of them at some point. I still can't believe how different they all feel!
Having owned both, I would personally choose the KLR on the road, but it needs a 16t front sprocket to not feel like it’s being rung out at highway speeds, on the flip side I ran -1 on the dr650 and was happy with it then on road still considering it’s geared a little tall stock IMO
You know, if I didn't do silly things like run single track and muddy two track. I'll bet I'd really like the KLR with a 16 tooth and some TKC-80s. That would be an awesome midweight ADV bike. To bad I'm a lunatic 🤣
Should’ve mentioned this earlier. A Mad Stad windshield with some hippo hands will eliminate a lot of your cold weather and wind issues for relatively cheap. Acerbis 5.3 tank is excellent for distance, I love mine. The next thing I’ll probably do is the Lectron carb, which is designed to be self adjusting. I’m NOT drilling holes in the air box.
Hey, great video! Look up the NSU fix problem. It seems generally rare but can potentially destroy the motor. I got a tusk LED headlight that greatly improved nighttime driving. And got the JNS footpeg lowering kit. I'll probably get some handlebar risers soon, the handlebars feel low when standing on pegs while offroading.
We fixed that on my buddies 06! Definitely a scary thing, but I believe they started putting thread locker on those fasteners at the factory prior to 2018... Do the JNS pegs get rid of the rubber isolation? I think I'll get a set of those and probably raise my bars up and push them forward a bit too. Should make it just about perfect!
@SwankyCatProductions yes. The JNS don't have any rubber at mounting points. It totally gets rid of that flex that the stock pegs have. The 1 inch Tusk habdlebar risers, with the 1.5 inch JNS dropped footpeg mounts made standing offroad much more comfortable.
You're telling me you're going to replace the headlight and the headlight Plastics? oh that sucks😢 the the Retro styling appeal of that bike is totally centered around the headlight. I just recommend getting an LED bulb to get that super efficient benefit from LEDs sealed beam rectangular headlights are awesome and the visor as it's called in the parts database is actually really appealing to me at least. Well at the end of the day you know what's best for your bikes. I'll get myself an XR650L and I'll do with that one as I please, I just hope you enjoy that Bulletproof rfvc engine to the fullest and spread the word of the XRs!
It's actually sort of grown on me to be honest! My plan will actually sort of keep the style, with just a bit more functionality. It's an awesome bike so far! Can't wait to put in more seat time!
I’m thinking of trading & until I get a chance to swing a leg over something that feel right the DR 650 is on the short list. I’ve owned a gen. 1 KLR & considering the new “S” model. As I’m 75 I’m certainly considering the weight disadvantage of the KLR Just doing gentle off road stuff now.
I love my DR. My co-workers kept saying to get a newer bike, once my salvaged bike needed an upper end rebuild, I just bought another DR that was already modded. It's mine.
@@SwankyCatProductions Make sure you get one made in Japan. Mine is a 2005, I believe that or 2006 is the last year before they moved production to Malaysia or something like that.
Thanks Swanky. lookin forward to what you will do with this bike. I think you will find it is more capable than either the klr or the xr. Have you watched any cross training enduro on youtube. those guys worship the dr and are fabulous off road riders
Please figure out how to put an analog tach on the DR. Many people search, without success, for a way to get a tach on this bike. That crappy speedometer would also be nice to replace. You will be a hero if you do an nice install video on an analog tach.
Whats going on....all white garage,,,,,,sunglasses please......add some color to the fleet. Great garage of bikes now......turn one into a SM.....that would be a nice build. Thanks for your hard work. Garth
Ha ha yeah it's probably the strangest thing I've ever done. Until my wife bought her car, I'd purposely never owned a white vehicle because white isn't a paint color, it's what paint looks like, before they add color, ha ha. It's starting to grow on me now though.
I owned a KLR (Gen1), DR650, DRZ400 and XT225 at the same time. The DR650 was my favorite all round do everything bike but I’ll admit I had more fun on the little XT 225 at that time. Nowadays, it’s a ATASESDCT for everything and CRF300 Rally for fun. 😇
Good looking bike. I love my DR650ES. Seems like mine will hit 70 in about 3 seconds and it has plenty of power to pass when cruising at 70. In fact 5th gear is kind of luggy at anything under 60.
I got so excited at the statement about it being better on the highway than the new KLR (which I have) that I went out and bought a DR650 this week. Only to find out the reason it feels so much better. The speedometer is almost 10 mph optimistic. So at 80 it’s doing about 72 in reality. I do like the lightness of it but I’m not sure it’s worth giving up the more modern features and wind protection of the klr.
So excited to see what you do with it. Last year I got a DR650 after 4 years with a G2 KLR. I love the DR650 for what I’m doing these days. Please replace the front fender it is a sail and I find it to cause a bit of a wobble in windy conditions. I’d love to see what you choose.
Always enjoy your content Cat , No matter what you’re driving. My KLR will be traded in soon for something different. Likely the V Strom. Either way I’ll be watching. Stay safe
Great info Cat. Thanks! I have the Dr.Z sm and I am curious on your thoughts with the Dr's off road capability. If it is as capable off road, and the weight penalty is a non issue, perhaps I may have to upgrade to a 650 like you did. Keep up the great content. Cheers!
Thanks man! I would bet that the DR might even perform better off road. The SM model has wheels about the same size as my TW200 and the DR's 21 front, 17 rear, should make up for the weight. The lower seat height will make me a bit more comfy off road too. Cheers!
@@SwankyCatProductions thanks for the reply. My concern is the suspension on the 650. I'm no supercross hero, but I have yet to bottom out my Dr.Z off road. I have 18" 21" rims on there now, but I'm actually switching back to my 17's for off road. Everyone airs down or gets 'fatties' for more traction, I've found that having a 120 on the front means more traction. I'll be looking forward to your thoughts on the 650 suspension for gnarlier stuff like single track. Cheers!
Just getting around to watching this video, those engine protection pieces are from B&B, the bash plate is too I believe. B&B makes some of the top of the line offroad protection parts for bikes because they run everything through the Australian outback, hundreds of miles through single track and desert. They are RTV on there, but they shouldn't go anywhere for the lifetime of the bike.
That’s a heck of a line up my dude... You got some really nice bikes. If had that selection, I wouldn’t ever want to get rid of any of them. And even though I’ve been a true Honda fan since 1978, I especially like the TW... Small bikes are just a blast off road, there is no denying that. And TDub kid has always been one of my favorite moto tubers, and he’s only had that one bike on his channel for who knows how long... But I have to admit though, I’ve never had an urge to own a KLR though. Well, maybe the special military edition, with the diesel. Lol... But other than that, I never found them appealing. I’m sure they’re great bikes, for some people, just not for me. But to each their own.
Thanks! Yeah, I think I'll have a pretty hard time letting any of them go. The KLR is definitely a unique bike. The ADV ready tank and wind protection is what sold me. However it didn't take too long to outride the bikes abilities. I think it'll be really interesting to see how close I can get to the road comfortability of the KLR, with the mods I have planned for both the DR and XR!
@@SwankyCatProductions when I was trying to decide on the 300l, and the Rally edition, that’s the same things that sold me, the tank and wind protection was just a no brainer for me. And Now I’m sort of attached to having a Rally tower. There are so many benefits to having it. But before the Rally came along, my plan was to build an XR or DR... And I may still get one... I’m excited to see how they work out for you! I know you haven’t covered the 300l/Rally, yet, but do you follow Shonky P? He installed a Big Bore kit to his Rally, and now it is actually faster than a stock 450l. I’m so stoked about this. I might just be able to have what I would consider a unicorn bike after all. I’m going to wait to see how these machines respond to this major modification before I jump in head first. But it sounds pretty promising, since 550 Performance is specializing in this kit, and they are really good people to work with.
I'm alot older and alot bigger than you. I've had 2 XR650L's, a XR650R, 2 BMW F650GS's, 2 DR650's, and an SWM650 Superdual X. At this time in my life, I think the DR650 would be my favorite.
Nothing is better on the KLR except wind protection. It is a dog motor wise and heavier. Suspension sucks on both for anything more than rough back roads.
Come to washington let's ride haha I have the 22 black edition with a heap of mods. Look into the lexx slip on exhaust it sounds perfect and its tunable I personally run 42mm race tip haha
Those klr's are just more comfortable on long rd trips with alot of highway. You set in less of a motocross position which is far less crippling on the body when on the highway for extended rides. I put 100 miles of highway on a Dr or xr and my back is screaming from the more upright riding position and vibration on the hard asphalt...
The KLR definitely is a little more relaxed for sure. New bars and risers seem to help me out on the DR and XR, but I think the seats are both angled down a bit more which isn't the best. I don't really mind the vibes though, unless I'm really high on the rpms I don't really even think about it.
@SwankyCatProductions yea man I totally understand what your saying. My klr vibrates a lil more when I'm running highway at a higher rpm. I will say I love my klr, but in actual woods and trail setting with alot of tight sections and ruts.... Those xr's and Dr's are just more nimble and eat the off rd stuff up and ask for more... I like the klr for more highway and township rds... If it's tight woods and hard off road , the Hondas and suzuki's rein Supreme in my opinion. Great video bro !!!
It will be interesting to see how you feel those two differ all around. Doesn't seem like the Dr lacks anywhere to do the same job as the XR. The Suzuki definitely makes the XR look dated, pretty much because it is. My 94 looks exactly the same as the 24 besides colors.
No offense to the XR, I've had one. But the DR650 is just a better Dual Sport motorcycle. The KLR is a budget ADV bike and has long passed its dual sport heritage. The decision has always been simple; if you ride all dirt=XR, all street=KLR, and if you want to ride everything=DR.
Awesome the bike has decent tires. Suzuki loses way too many sales by running showroom slicks when its sitting next to an XR. The face-lift DR200S was the same, could have been way more competitive with the 230s. With your TW background, a supermoto front rim with knobby would be a youtube unique platform. Great trade.
"Big Bore Brappy Attitude", that could be a t shirt. I owned a DR 650 about 25 years ago, it was a lot of fun, hope you enjoy it. They seem to be very popular in Australia.
I think you should possibly do a before and after on which bike you would choose over the other two in stock form, and then which one you’ll choose in modded form. That is if you could only have one and maybe give reasons why. That would be a cool video.
Xitomer lower footpeg mounts and rox offset risers with the tusk chub big moto bend made my 2018 a lot more comfortable. It already had a sergeant seat when I bought it.
🇦🇺😎👍Hey prepper Dawg . I just went to my local food store and the milk was $7.85 for 3 litres of . Thank goodness they’re getting rid of the cows 🐮 🐮🐮🐮
On the DR, from what I've heard via Barry at Crosstraining Adventures (Aussie), upgrading the suspension makes a huge difference but it also depends on your riding conditions or expectations. When these two builds are done, I'd love to have you compare them to my 2003 KTM 640 Adventure. All thumpers, similar engine cc, similar riding intention, etc. Would be a great comparo.
@@SwankyCatProductions The 640 was replaced by the 690 in 2008, I think, so 640 is old school but quite capable. About 50 hp stock. 350 pounds dry weight but also holds 7.5 gallons for good range. Any thumper is vibey and the KTM follows that but what do you expect, eh?
Thanks man! I think if I'd have sold it outright it would've been much tougher. I also decided it wasn't mine anymore last fall, so I've had some time haha.
Nice video. I have a KLR650S and my brother has a DR650. The DR is a 2023 and ran very poorly with the stock carb. He put a pumper carb on it and it now runs as it should. I've ridden the DR a number of times and its is a great bike. Still a little tall and heavy for me when doing more intense off road riding. I use my XT250 for that style of riding. If the DR was shorter and had fuel injection I may have given it more consideration before I got my KLR. I got the KLR for longer rides that are mainly road. It compliments my XT250 well.
Thank you! That sounds like a perfect use of those bikes! The DR is definitely a good compromise, but you can't beat a 250 off road. No worries, just brapp.
I’m getting the bug to try a DR 650 to tinker with. Currently own V-Strom 1000XT, a little bit on the large side…the DR 650 just seems like such fun…a blank slate.
I bought a used DR that was tricked out with cogent suspension front and back, seat, acerbis tank, exhaust and just about everything else you would want. Added a Harbor Freight pelican case on the back which is super useful for tools or throwing groceries in for store runs. It is the perfect bike IMO for versatility but also maintenance. Adjusted valves this weekend (first time since I’ve owned it) and it was easily done - just a super simple, solid bike. Puts a grin on my face every time I ride.
Dr650 seems like great bike. I'll would love to try one. I have a Drz. I don't get the comment about wanting a bike you could go all day at 60 and the Drz can't. Mine will go 70 all day long and have hit 80 uphill. Mine is smooth at 60. Little vibration. I can ride all day long. So what are you talking about? I have the 400s.
I was elated when you got the XR650L,,,,, Now even more so because anything you do to the DR650 can be done to the XR650L ... almost exactly the same engine and trans. how they got away with it is a mistery.... I guess the oiling system must be different I don't know... I lowered the XR650L alot... made it to where I can flat foot it when seated with both feet I don't think I'ed have to do that for the DR650 ! I only have a 30" inseam and I wanted a DR but here the DR's are very rare...people just don't get rid of them...there are plenty of them riding around though... that says alot ! ...but I got a good deal on a low mileage 2002 XR650L and haven't looked back ! I tell everyone now that I know what a fly feels like when you swat them with a fly swatter ! as soon as I could I raised myself to see of the truck was going to roll over me.... but no he slammed on the brakes when he felt the impact and saw me flying over the hood.... my bike's front forks were bent back to the frame and the tire was flat with a slight dent in the rim... I had the forks straightened and back on in a week as soon as I recovered from the beating I took... but the bike didn't fair too well the impact was so hard that it busted the roller bearing cage on the crank and being a 1968 kawasaki w1 650cc parts were scarcer than hens teeth ! I had to pre pay and order them from japan and it would take 3 months! I traded the bike to my neighbor and he fixed it up.... I was working and didn't have the time nore inclination... best handling bike I had till the Kawasaki ninja 250cc it drove itself down the country roads ! ... sense then I have learned while your on the pavement you have to drive for the other guy too !!!! .... I have a 1977 triumph T-120 750cc now to replace it with it's very close but not the same....in handling.... but alot more power !..... so drive defensively ....the bad thing about back roads is the car drivers arn't paying attention, their watching for deer ! I've not been on a Gen1, yet. However I'd say I agree about the Gen2 and DR. With the little I've ridden it, it seems like it should be a good replacement for someone like me looking for a light, yet hwy capable, dual sport that can tackle mild single track with relative easy. I can't wait!!!
Even though it’s still an older style, the DR looks so much newer than the XR… it’s the headlight. The XR NEEDS a new updated headlight shroud. If I owned on I would try to fit a DR headlight shroud.

Thanks man!!! And thanks so much for the support! It means a lot and I'm hoping I can make it worth your while!
Congrats on the new DR, I was looking for a nice used one, but couldn’t find one so I purchased a 2024. Two days later my neighbor drives by on a 2011 with only 400 miles on it and it was for sale. Lol
I’m excited to see what you’ve got planned for your DR.
Stay safe and I really enjoy your videos.
Oh no!!! Haha. That's usually how it goes. Nothing good for sale... until you make a purchase haha. Thanks! I can't wait to see how it turns out too! Haha.
Great quality video. Everything you say is engaging and doesn’t just feel like filler. Great production!
Thank you! I'm really glad to hear that!!!
the dr wakes up alot with a 150 main jet drill the pipe out 2" hole in the air box but one of the best mods is get a 14 tooth front sprocket... makes the bike alot better off road and will still get 100mph top speed
Wow, that's pretty crazy. I still can't get over the range these bikes can cover, even with the stock gearing!
I cruise 80 on my DR650 with the tusk windshield and Acerbis 6.6 gallon tank all day no issues.
Delkevic makes a 3.5lb full exhaust for $300 plus their $50 screen type baffle sounds nice and isn't too loud. Swapping the front fender out for the Acerbis one helps on the highway also.
Nice! That sounds like one heck of a KLR rival!
@@LeviHeizer What is the name of that acerbis fender for the DR 650?
@@LeviHeizer What is the top speed on your DR 650?
@@MattPerry it's on the Procycle website, just a universal replacement.
I think I've seen him! Yeah the DR needs a few mods, but is an incredible platform for a lightweight ADV!
Notshookadv here on the tube will make most klr riders cry with the Australian riding he does …
Keep the comparisons coming! I think my end goal is going to be either a DR650, KLR650, or XR650, so your direct back-to-back comparisons are really helpful.
PERFECT!!!!
I’ve ridden all 3 plus the KTM 690. The power of the 690 is intoxicating. Just so much fun to ride. But the next guy is just happy to plod along. To each their own.
Going fishing on my bike is like my number 1 fav thing to do. I go searching for brook trout creeks for days 😂
That's my favorite thing to find and fish for too!!!
@@SwankyCatProductions maybe you should head north of the border and bring me that husky lol! I’ll trade you my gen 1 and get you into some specks :p
can't wait for some "impartial" comparison by the same person of the two in real dual sport offroading conditions . Good job
Surprising to hear how good the DR is on-road, I wouldn't have expected that given the relative lack of protection. Thanks for the insight
LOL
Oh man, yeah that's true! And I most certainly did! I think I enjoyed the XR the most, but that's just because I finally got to try the new bars! 🤣
Actually pretty excited for this series. I have always heard many good things about the DRs but never explored them myself.
Yeah same! Haha. I'm pretty interested to see how things go with both of these bikes. Very promising so far!
Glad you’re finally reviewing an actual dual sport worthy of the definition
It should be a lot of fun!
You're right. There's nothing better than a DR650. You can have all those big 500 pound bikes. The DR is the best all-rounder available and for some reason it's extremely satisfying to ride.
Definitely!
All three of the 650cc thumper dual sports from Japan have been compared on this channel, which is such a good resource. I can’t think of another channel where this is the case 🤟
Hahaha yeah man!!! I'm just crazy enough to make it happen 🤣. Thank you!!!
I love my 2022 DR 650 5500 miles I put a warp 9 fork brace on and it made a big difference in handling I recommend it.
That's awesome! I think I'll really enjoy mine too. Light ADV / Dual Sport is my goal as well!
I sold my ktm 690 Enduro r and bought a dr 650. I enjoy it so much more, I don't regret it at all. I'm looking forward to your assessment.
No way?!?! I suppose I can see it. Any idea why you like the DR better?
I bought a DR finally a week ago. Did a bunch of mods that cost me like less than $10 total and I’m just getting started
Picked up my 2008 Dr on Thursday on Saturday I went and rode over 60 miles of dirt LOL I really like that thing picked it up with lots of extras already done. Can't wait to see what you do with yours
Perfect!!! That sounds awesome! I'm hoping I can get on mine this week and do some off road riding.
Congrats on the DR!
HC piston,Ported head, Stg 2 cam, TM40 and a full exhaust and it’s a RIPPER! Love mine and the power is amazing once on crooked. 💪🏻
Woah, nice! That sounds awesome!
Think it is more about the maintenance on the Husky. I'm just not interested because I just don't have the time for lots of maintenance.
I think these Suzuki's have a niche that's so good that it draws people to them. Reliable & affordable, plenty of parts w/ no waiting
like I've heard of KTM owners waiting a year for stuff. But I digress, the DR's(400/650) are simple for most to work on plus the cult
following means there people all around doing stuff to their bike. After market is thru the roof, part of the culture, and for the most
part it's affordable. I'm looking for a 1st bike so I'm looking at your reasons for the 650's ~ thanks for the videos
100% agree! They're pretty hard to beat, as is the aftermarket support and communities who know them so well!
Yup & would ya believe I've not bought a bike yet..... lmao, I'm depending on videos like your to guide me . TY much
Man you are making me miss my dr. I loved that bike. I had to sell it so we could financially survive mat leave, now on a klx300 (which is great) but I miss the grunt of the dr.
Love the DR man. I have a 2014 and it’s a blast!
Sounds like some good mods! Haha yeah I'm hoping to leave my air box in tact as well!
You can ride the drz at 60 all day with the S gearing no problem. Interstate I’m still not comfortable on.
You're telling me you're going to replace the headlight and the headlight Plastics?
oh that sucks😢
the the Retro styling appeal of that bike is totally centered around the headlight.
As I’m 75 I’m certainly considering the weight disadvantage of the KLR
Just doing gentle off road stuff now.
Good steady bike took a dr650 to Morocco in 98, no issues
That's an epic trip, nice!!!
Yes. It is. Same power as the KLR, 75-100 lbs less weight.
Heck yeah, like a whole different kind of bike!
I love my DR. My co-workers kept saying to get a newer bike, once my salvaged bike needed an upper end rebuild, I just bought another DR that was already modded. It's mine.
Nice! Yeah, new bikes are cool. Old bikes are cooler!
I hope you find a Gen1 KLR.
I've been looking! I think I'll need to wait a while on that one though. To many irons in the fire the way it is 🤣
@@SwankyCatProductions Make sure you get one made in Japan. Mine is a 2005, I believe that or 2006 is the last year before they moved production to Malaysia or something like that.
Get Doubletake mirrors, new fork springs and shock spring.
Sounds like a good plan!
Just sold my 2023 KLR adventure. Traded for a Yamaha Super Tenere. Loving the Yamaha. Looking for a DR650 now.
Nice!
Thanks Swanky. lookin forward to what you will do with this bike. I think you will find it is more capable than either the klr or the xr. Have you watched any cross training enduro on youtube. those guys worship the dr and are fabulous off road riders
Will be interesting to see what is your preferred bike to ride regardless of views
Yeah I'm pretty interested to see how I feel about them after a few rides and some mods!
The stock gearing in 1st and 5th on both the KLR and DR 650 are almost identical The DR is about 2mph faster at highway speeds.
I've done several 1000-mile days on DRs. I've ripped sandy, muddy, rooty, rutty singletrack on the same DRs.
Good looking bike. I love my DR650ES. Seems like mine will hit 70 in about 3 seconds and it has plenty of power to pass when cruising at 70. In fact 5th gear is kind of luggy at anything under 60.
Hello Clintonville. The DR is often forgot greatness - best compromise of the Japanese 650s yet in the shadows of the drz.
Yep, you got duped. Speedometer off.
Let's see some timed, roll on tests at different speeds and gears.
Hmm, interesting....
So excited to see what you do with it. Last year I got a DR650 after 4 years with a G2 KLR. I love the DR650 for what I’m doing these days. Please replace the front fender it is a sail and I find it to cause a bit of a wobble in windy conditions. I’d love to see what you choose.
I'm glad to hear that! What fender did you go with to fix it?
I think making an XR 150R super moto project should be on the list of full-time TH-camr content 🤔
❤ loved my dr since I bought it new in 2008
Always enjoy your content Cat , No matter what you’re driving. My KLR will be traded in soon for something different. Likely the V Strom. Either way I’ll be watching. Stay safe
Thanks man! I appreciate that! The 800DE???
First things first. A head to head comparison between the two. Put the same tire on both bikes, and see which is better on and off road.
I will do that at some point!
The DR650 has a truly remarkable motor. Much better than the XR or the KLR. Perfectly happy on the Interstate or in very technical terrain
True!
Nice! Thanks for the intel, I'll have to check them out!
It's no DR, that's for sure!
Good choice on the DR650. The one that rules them all 😊
Thanks! I'm pretty darn excited to try it out!
Other than going to slightly stiffer springs I would leave it stock. And being that you're so light, that may not be necessary
It works alright for mild off roading, but I definitely want something stiffer for the rough trails I'll be riding.
Ha ha maybe it will be! Nice, yeah I think I'm really going to like mine!
I think you should possibly do a before and after on which bike you would choose over the other two in stock form, and then which one you’ll choose in modded form. That is if you could only have one and maybe give reasons why. That would be a cool video.
Very good idea! Will do!
Xitomer lower footpeg mounts and rox offset risers with the tusk chub big moto bend made my 2018 a lot more comfortable. It already had a sergeant seat when I bought it.
Nice! I think that's my plan!!!
Here in NorCal there’s a lot of used DR’s almost as many as DR-Z‘s or KLR’s. The community and aftermarket seem similar to KLR or XR’s
Love my white 2018 Suzuki DR 650 only have 500 miles on it 👍 Nice bike & video 😊
Nice! Thanks!!!
🇦🇺😎👍Hey prepper Dawg . I just went to my local food store and the milk was $7.85 for 3 litres of . Thank goodness they’re getting rid of the cows 🐮 🐮🐮🐮
OUCH!
I'll have to check that out, thanks! Hmm interesting... I think I've seen a few of those for sale. How do they compare to the 701?
@@SwankyCatProductions The 640 was replaced by the 690 in 2008, I think, so 640 is old school but quite capable. About 50 hp stock. 350 pounds dry weight but also holds 7.5 gallons for good range. Any thumper is vibey and the KTM follows that but what do you expect, eh?
Bummed out the KLR is gone. But I get it.
Thanks man! I think if I'd have sold it outright it would've been much tougher. I also decided it wasn't mine anymore last fall, so I've had some time haha.
Jet kit, airbox mod, slip on, 14tooth front sprocket.
Sounds like a wheely machine!
Nice vid!
Also, I definitely recognize those roads.
Look into the Neutral switch and fix it
Didn't they start using thread locker prior to 2018?
@@SwankyCatProductions Maybe, wanna chance it?
All the ‘bare bones’ 650s are great; XR650, DR650, KLR650. I prefer my KLR, but would gladly ride any of them. Thinkin about buying my buddy’s XR650
Definitely! Nice. The XR is an awesome choice!
I recently bought a XR400R, I'd like see you buy one and install a street legal kit
The fuel efficiency of a xr150 is intriguing. Dr200 vs xr150 could get some hits.
Those have always been interesting to me. Maybe if I can find some inexpensive used ones someday!
I bought a dr650 back in august as my first bike and since then i have ridden other bikes and i like the dr better
How did you like it as a first bike?
I was elated when you got the XR650L,,,,, Now even more so because anything you do to the DR650 can be done to the XR650L ... almost exactly the same engine and trans. how they got away with it is a mistery.... I guess the oiling system must be different I don't know...
I lowered the XR650L alot... made it to where I can flat foot it when seated with both feet
I don't think I'ed have to do that for the DR650 ! I only have a 30" inseam and I wanted a DR but here the DR's are very rare...people just don't get rid of them...there are plenty of them riding around though... that says alot ! ...but I got a good deal on a low mileage 2002 XR650L and haven't looked back ! I love the bike I haven't got it preforming like I know it can yet.... but that will come with time !
I don't feel the need for wind protection, never have only when driving through swarms of bees.... LOL ( they won't sting you then !) but it sure makes you think !!!!
it will be interesting to see your tire pick and sprocket picks on both bikes ...I just hope you don't wind up under the frame of some truck on these bikes.... car drivers are getting absolutely crazy now days ! it's like they leave their brains at home any more....
so Drive defensively ! and drive safe !
Yeah, I think it'll be a pretty interesting adventure! Ha ha yeah, I pretty much try to avoid traffic as much as possible. Just not worth the risk.
@@SwankyCatProductions My one and only car collision happened in the middle of no where... paved country road no traffic sense I got on the road... I saw this 4x4 pickup on the right side of the road I slowed down as I approached I whipped out in the other lane and eased on the throttle and about when I was almost level with his tailgate I saw the front wheels turn to the max I thought OH Sh$% ! and he gunned it and I hit him at the left front wheel doing about 35~40mph I flipped over the handle bars and over his hood my right knee hit his hood ( there was a dent in it) I flew about 12' in the air and about 30' horizontal landed on my back and slid off the turn around spot ( just a wide spot in the road ) and then slid off the embankment.... I had the forks straightened and back on in a week as soon as I recovered from the beating I took... but the bike didn't fair too well the impact was so hard that it busted the roller bearing cage on the crank
and being a 1968 kawasaki w1 650cc parts were scarcer than hens teeth !
LOL....

Have a 23 dr650 and 23 klr. To me the dr is way better except for the fuel injection on klr…
Swank: LMAO at you..chasing the uni-korn bike R we..? I only like to comment on bikes I have owned..so.. gen 1 klr650,18,000 miles..loved that bike..noteworthy was massive tank..great range..Gen 2 klr650 (2014se) edition..some big improvements..beefed up facrory suspension, good wind protection BUT added weight from the gen1 (50 lbs) ug..sold both..Now own a 2014 DR650..my mods include..14 tooth front sprocket..lowered foot pegs..1 inch bar risers..sargent comfort seat ( a must) ..large rack on the back..no carb or exhaust mods ..never owned an XR650..what ones best..? I guess it depends on the ride mission..off road..DR650 no debate..on road KLR650 (gen 2) with mild off road..throw an XR650 into the mix..my guess the best off road for sure..street..? I donno..new carb emissions rules will prob make these bikes discontinued ( to bad)..anywho ,enjoy your channel.. more vids please (grins) :o)
Agreed! It has actually sort of grown on me a bit, but the DR is definitely a slicker looking bike!
Stock DR650 is @ 5K rpm at 80mph redline is 7K but 70mph to 80mph is about a perfect cruising speed in 5th
I cannot believe how good it is at high speed!
Better pegs! Pivot pegs are great.
DR650 ftw!
I didn't realize until I rode it in my woods that the pegs are rubber isolated 🤣
