Most of you probably know me (Maya) from the sailing videos I make with my husband Aladino. But this video is about what I was doing before I ever met Aladino, back when I still lived in Canada. It’s not like I’m that much older now -- I’m still only 22 -- but I think that this little $1 sailboat was the catalyst which propelled me into an adult life of adventure and courage. It’s one of the most important stories that has shaped my life so far. I’m going to tell it in chapters, so for now, here’s chapter 1. If you like this story, want early access to the next chapters, and would like to support these videos, please consider becoming a patron. www.patreon.com/user?u=13249792
i hope the person who sold you the boat gets to see these videos as it would be a gift beyond riches to see how he /she had a hand in creating this exquisite story a very good gesture that is reaping reward
What an exquisite story, Maya. Bonding with your father, at an age where most daughters do the opposite, is truly remarkable. Any therapist could write several textbook’s about the Electra Complex allusion. Any fool could see you and your father’s love, radiating through both your spirits and your accomplishments. Any normal girl would envy your closeness to their father at that age. Maya, how refreshing to see the joy in both of your souls. Think someone said, “a daughter having the approval of her father, will enjoy that anchoring her entire life.” If they didn’t, it needs to be said. This would make a great novel and movie. Much love, Old Ron
I’m 57 my dream is very different than yours And yeah I’m getting a late start As a very wise person once said It’s never to late to realize and live our dreams . I love your story ❤️ I think that’s true in part because it’s you that told it with your soft voice and kind sole A truly beautiful person to the core I’m living in Louisiana Working on paying off a few acres I have shops and I enjoy building and making things from scratch From wood work to metal fab and welding to painting refinishing So that common thread of true craftsman that runs trough us makers left me with a tear in my eye Thank you for sharing your story And validating my journey As I am so close to realizing My goals only to set new ones May you always have wind in your sails thank you 😊
What a beautiful story, Maya you have the skill to touch deep on people’s soul. Being a dad of two girls a little over your age opened a window to see how girls look at their daddy. That part was big on me And I can only imagine how good your dad was enjoying that time with you and your lovely boat. Keep sailing and doing what you do. You inspire people easily and deeply and it’s amazing to see how people can find better content in TH-cam than in the cable or satellite and with out paying a penny, just mentioning your angelical music, the tone and modulation of your voice and the way you tell stories. I am sure you are and always would be daddy’s girl. Thanks for all the good things you do.
This really brings back memories of spending time with my dad on the boat and now he's gone they're really precious memories I keep with me. Thank you.
Maya, I woke up and for a few minutes had no pain lost in your words. If I may, thank you for your honesty. Fair winds and following seas to you and your beau.
What a beautiful story. I connect with this on such a deep level. I am 20 and just got my first sailboat. It was also a gift. I am now getting it ready to sail around the world with the love of my life. It gave me chills listening to your story. We've led parallel lives! I hope the rest of your journey is as wonderful as the beginning. Safe sailing. xxx
Dads are special that way, I suspect he was/is you greatest safety net whether he knew anything anything about sail boats or not. I enjoyed the tale and will need to check out your other videos.
My Dad showed me how to fish, hunt and sail on a 25 foot wooden sail boat. He also encouraged me to me an auto mechanic. If I know how it works,I can fix it. Thanks,Dad. He is in Thailand and I am in Seattle.
I watched the video and tears came to my eyes. You are living the life I always dreamed of. The difference between you and I is that your parents encouraged and helped you achieve your dreams and my parents always told me why they weren't possible. Curtailing my lust for life and chances of ever living out my dreams and my full potential. So be thankful for a father who's encouraged and willing to help guide you through such important life changing events. I think your boat is amazing, almost as amazing as you! It must have taken a bit of courage to take a chance to live such and life....I applaud you! Thanks for these videos and sharing your amazing life with all of us! Happy New Year!
I am struck by the obvious intelligence and sheer common sense of this young girl and you can almost see her by listening to her describe her journey, She does not disappoint. I am watching this because in my love of sailing videos I heard music that I liked and saw places that looked interesting. The more of her posted videos I watched the more I realized how exceptional this young girl was in a very crazy world. I can credit her parents for her values but still, you must choose your partners and path in life by yourself. Maya has chosen well and created a life that allows for her musical ability and love of exploring new environments to come together. An exceptional young lady by any standard but very special in today's world.
@@SailingMagicCarpet Maya - The more of your videos I watch the more I am impressed - Not to sound like a stalker - as at 77 - I have a lovely girl 40 yrs my junior who cares for me. The wonderful thing is to see your relationship with your father. (it was a real joy to see your enthusiasm over getting the motor to run again) I have a daughter that I was very close to as she was growing up but have not spoken too in over 10 yrs. Unlike your father, I have had a "checkered" past - but have no problems now. I just love your music - its soul - but in a classical way. thanks for replying.
I cried... This is so touching, especially the part about your Dad... What a breath of fresh air, you are a blessed storyteller, and I was captivated from beginning to end, well done! Bryan from Gambier
I always wanted to have a daughter, and I dreamed that she'd love sailing and that I could teach her about boat building and how to sail. Your father is a very lucky man.
As I myself prepare to no longer call Squamish after four years of studies, I know that I will miss the industrial yet whimsical Squamish harbour. Many of those boats are still there and the tales of student living on a boat still inspire some on campus, myself included. All the best with your adventures around the world, and I will live virtually through your stories until I am ready to sail across the oceans.
Watched this great vid for the 3rd time now. It is still overwhelming and I had tears of joy in my eyes. I want to thank the former owner of Curlew III, he has my deepest respect for doing something so generous like that. It was the right thing to do definitely.
I was about to write a comment after I saw this episode... but instead I read most of the comments already there... you make the unanimity!!! What the heck... let's be redundant... you are very special!
What a wonderful story - I hope you sold it for $1.00 - I have this feeling that the oldies who made this wonderful gesture to you did so because they had reached a stage in their lives when they could no longer sail and were pleased to offer some young person a chance at the enjoyment they once had. Very heart-warming 😀
That is such a great story. Curlew is a beautiful boat. I don’t think you said what ever happened to her. You are so beautiful and I know Alidino is the luckiest dude alive. $1 boat is worth a million with your editing skills and your tone of your voice. Truly a masterpiece.
Luckily I also experienced the feeling of one's dream coming through. I purchased my boat about one and a halve years ago and am now in the process of refitting her. One big dream fullfilled and with that, many more were created. Unfortunately I do not have the possibility to share this with my dad, since he passed away quite some time ago. You put into words, a lot of the things that I cannot even begin to describe. Your ability of storytelling and videography is captivating and calming at the same time. Thank you for sharing your experiences with the world and giving up part of your privacy in the process. I wish you fair winds and welcoming shores.
Hi Martin -- I'm so happy you hear that your dream came true as well. Thank you for taking the time to watch, comment, and share a piece of your story with me.
I honestly can not believe how well your words string together, rhythmatic and informative all the whilst describing a dream. Its truly refreshing to see and understand the world of sailing from clear and young eyes. I thank you so much for your hard work. Thank you again.
Such an inspiring story. Sometimes, the stars just align. The previous owner obviously just wanted to move on and end the ongoing bills. And you came along just as he was getting frustrated with the never ending dockage fees. You obviously inspired him to relinquish control of his baby to someone who shared his love for it.
Really awesome hearing your story, I started off when I was a kid on my Grandpa's 18' cabin cruiser he built in 1962, fell in love with the water there, did the Navy thing, now I am living on a 42' Spencer that was built right there in Richmond BC. Looking forward to venturing up into those waters of your home turf this summer. This is one of the better sailing videos I have seen on TH-cam, thank you for sharing!
A bond that will never leave! Another great video, Dad helped me build my first boat at the age of 18. Drew engineers' plans for things needed to patch up a succession of old boats, shared a beer and a paintbrush during winter maintenance. Was with me for the first "going foreign". He is sadly long gone. It is now my turn, I am now dad, grandpa, mentor, DIY guru and occasionally that crazy guy. Hopefully creating similar happy memories. Have a great xmas and new year. V32 Swedish Lass
What a beautiful story Maya and a beautiful boat. To reflect on the past and see how the universe shapes our future is an amazing journey. I can imagine your connection with your Dad grew even stronger because of Curlew.
That was a fun little back story. I started watching TH-cam sailing channels less than a year ago. I was lucky enough to find your channel early on. So I have followed the Magic Carpet journey right along. I knew that you had previously acquired a sailboat for a dollar, but but didn't know the whole story. So thank you for going back just for us.
You are a talented storyteller, passing great emotions. A proof that sophisticated video equipment are not required to touch viewers. Thanks for sharing.
I started watching your channel a week ago. Binge watching to try and catch up. Then I saw that you had pre channel video from BC. I’m from Ontario but lived 3 years in Port Coquitlam. I have to say, yours is the sweetest of stories. You remind me of my daughter over here in the UK now. Your father must be so proud! Anyway, I look forward to more. Thank you both for sharing your story! SK in the UK
Your amazing. And it's no doubt that you have amazing people around you and by your own incredible character draw amazing people into your life to share your adventures and precious moments the world can bring. Without question you are very close to your dad in a special bond which has come full circle as you have grown into your own person. You remind me of my own daughter. I wish you two were friends. She's an adventurer and has traveled the world. Thanks for sharing vid.
OMG! We follow you in current time but came across this older video. We LOVE it! Just a GREAT story! Thank you for brining us along! Keep sailing and playing your music please! We are with you!
Though my first boat wasn't free, she was sold to me at a very reasonable price. She needed minor repairs and refurbishments that I quickly sorted out in the first few months. After 4 years, I decided that I wanted a newer boat and sold her for about what I had in her (tiny profit but profit nonetheless)...and searched for her replacement. Now, whenever I step onto the fore or aft deck of the replacement, though I do enjoy her, my mind always goes back to that first boat and how much I miss her and the memories that she provided. I imagine this is much the way you feel about Curlew III...
This video made me cry. It's perhaps the vision, the bravery, the dream you dared to dream. And maybe it's the story of the dreamer in all of us, re-fueled by seeing this. Sail on.
You definitely have sailing in your DNA, you're having the time of your life, and what great experiences with your Dad. Some day you will look back and say, "That was great times."
Incredible, fate possibly. “Life is Beautiful” movie comes to mind in a very good way. Will watch& “following the curve of time” as you both go along your way. Beautiful boats. Good Health& journey
I just got finished watching { how you got your first sailboat for $1 dollar } where you fleshed a picture of your { Mom an Dad } I see now where you get your good looks , you are the spitting image of her !!! Terrific editing I don't know where you find the time ? I wish I could do such a job , I have watched more than 50 episodes so far , I can seem to get enough , keep up the good work .I cant wait till I get to your next boat ( Don't tell anyone I peeked ahead)
Hi Maya, unfortunately,I'm not amongst the first to see you story telling video this time, life has had me particularly busy this end of the year, and even now,it's taken four short sittings to see it through. You have briefly touched on this amazing wonderful story before, and I'm delighted to see a few more pictures and hear more details in your magical story telling voice. You really make it easy to become immersed in your life story, and thirsting for more. Wishing you the very best, thanks so much for sharing☺️
Wayne, I'm so happy when you watch our videos and comment, you always say lovely and uplifting things. Thank you so much for your constant support and well wishes. Happy holidays to you and your family, don't let the extra busy-ness wear you down! -Maya
Congratulations, since I was a kid a have passion for sailboats. Now I have 2, my babies, a ct 41 classic and a moody 44 both 1975. Welcome to the club.
I have to say I really enjoyed your story the highs and lows your excitement at getting a running motor I wish you all the best and a big hi five to dad
Your narrative is beautifully woven and washed through my soul as if a gentle wave carrying your beloved Curlew III on a warm breeze. I immediately forwarded this video to my wife, like yourself a 'go-getter' in her own right, as the perfect embodiment of living out one' dreams. Very glad to have discovered your channel and looking forward to more wonderful storytelling. There are many sailing vlogs out there, but I encourage you to continue developing your own unique film voice. To your exquisite soul, my wish that all you and your husband may dream, become reality. Happy New Year, beautiful sailor!
Watching your story about CURLEW reminded me of another CURLEW whose story I am sure would interest you. Pauline and Tim Carr bought a 100 year old 28 foot gaff rigged motorless wooden boat called CURLEW and sailed her and raced her all over the world for 30 years. They settled on South Georgia Island (yes where Shackleton landed on the JAMES CAIRD) where they ran the museum. They published a beautiful book called 'Antarctic Oasis' about their time on South Georgia.
I sometimes watch your videos this first one might be the best TH-cam ever. I stumbled on to it after seeing your current videos. So great a story for anyone.
I loved this story. I kinda wish this life was a dream of mine.Being elderly with a couple physical limitations I will stay on the land. Blessings to you.
love the story so well written I to wanted to live out my life on a sail boat .I was looking at a H28 resonantly but I'll just follow yours as its looking great . Keep up the great work
I feel lucky to have stumbled on such a sweet story, told with fantastic grace, set in a place near to my heart. I will be interested in what will come in the 2nd Chapter.
Oh wow! You were at the government docks in Squamish? I am there too on my 27ft C&C "Peddler" and lived on it for a few summers. I love this place to much and learning to get to know your boat. What a cool story and so well told :) Good luck on your journey!
This video continues to be my favorite of all the sailing videos on TH-cam. It's the beginning .. it's your dream becoming reality .. I wait eagerly for new videos. Hopefully, when you're on the Pacific side our bows will cross and we can spend an afternoon together. You guys are tops.
Super cool! I doing eczanky the same right now, I’m 26, owning a old bready to scrap for €1,- and none of my reletens knows staff of boating or sailing. Now 1 year later with restoring and learning every time new staf, 8 months left before the first day of sailing. August this year I've planned to live on the boad at the harbor of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. planned to live on the board at the harbor of Rotterdam at the Netherlands.
What a great story! found this while watching you other videos, and it really caught my attention since i literally just bought a 26 foot sailboat for 1 dkr.. and since i am only 22 as well i kinda get what you felled back then, its amazing!
Honestly that's just an awesome story! I bought my first boat in second year Uni also. Mine needed a lot more work but I go it going to. Its resulted in owning a string or boats over the years! Glad to see there are others out there!
Saw this as a TH-cam feed as I follow a couple of other sailing youtubers.. subscribed immediately looking forward to your story. You go girl be bold be strong !
We loved this video. We wish we could have had a boat like that when we were your age. And we only have one piece of advice for you. Enjoy your journey wherever it takes you. We are looking forward to the next video. All the best, Jim and Donna Andersen, Cat Boat Adventures, Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts
Wow what a small world came across your vid last night. That was Hugh and Chrystal’s boat they are from lillooet as am I. Hugh put a lot of love into that boat. Great vids looks like you guys are having a great time in the med. We are currently sailing in Mexico having a blast.
Rick, that is amazing that you know them! I just sent them a link to this video, but they haven’t replied to any emails in quite some time. I hope they are still doing well, or maybe they simply don’t check emails anymore! If you have any contact with them, please let them know this video exists. Enjoy your own sailing adventures, sounds beautiful!!

Love the story. You have a poetic soul.
so did you sell your 1 dollar boat? you was right it was a beautiful boat
Thank you truly beautiful boat and one question what's the length of the boat?
Do you still have that first boat?
I think it was your dad who sold you the boat for $1 ;) It doesn't matter how you got there, enjoy the adventure :)
A tear came to my eye in the joy of hearing you say, "You can have her, for one dollar." Too right!
i hope the person who sold you the boat gets to see these videos as it would be a gift beyond riches to see how he /she had a hand in creating this exquisite story a very good gesture that is reaping reward
Well said. I totally agree.
Probably knew her father

I’m living in Louisiana

I have shops and I enjoy building and making things from scratch
From wood work to metal fab and welding to painting refinishing
So that common thread of true craftsman that runs trough us makers left me with a tear in my eye
Thank you for sharing your story

What a beautiful story Maya and a beautiful boat. To reflect on the past and see how the universe shapes our future is an amazing journey. I can imagine your connection with your Dad grew even stronger because of Curlew.

What a wonderful story to be shared at this time of year. Thank you Maya and Happy Holidays.
Luck favours the prepared mind. Beautiful how it came together for you. Can't wait for the next episode.
This video made me cry. It's perhaps the vision, the bravery, the dream you dared to dream. And maybe it's the story of the dreamer in all of us, re-fueled by seeing this. Sail on.
Wow, thank you very much for this comment Nicholas. I'm so glad that the video touched you.
You are a great story teller with an amazing voice. Keep it up.
That was good thanks for sharing, I can understand your love for old boats⛵️
Very touching, I don't know how found this video but I am ending my day with your amazing story and beautiful images, very well done! Carpe diem :)
I was bawling with joy...what a wonderful story
I am glad you felt that happiness that you had with your own boat at such a young age.
