      Technically the Soviet Union didn't collapse until later that year but its sphere of influence especially in Eastern Europe broke apart after the Soviet Leadership ceased funding the Soviet puppet governments there. Country after country broke loose and opened its previously strictly secured border starting with Hungary. Socialist Regiemes in those countries basically ceased to exist in a matter of weeks.

    This was one of the first Hard Rock/Metal concerts that was permitted to take place, because these types of venues just weren't allowed in Russia up until this point in history. It was a HUGE deal to these folks because not only were some of the best bands performing live for the first time in their country,it symbolized Russians finally having the freedom to take part in things that were strictly forbidden during their entire lives before this event. This was most definitely a damn good way to celebrate what they've been fighting so desperately for!😃

    • @skywillfindyou
      @skywillfindyou 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it was just a very big concert they didn't enjoy before like many other people on Earth.
      They had freedom for those things, whatever laws did say.

    Just say rock or metal. They are, in no way, alternative. “Alternative” as a genre is a term that is no longer used. It was used to describe a particular musical movement in the early 90’s that grew quickly as an “alternative” to glamour metal and pop.

    The cops had no idea what was going on in the show and they just beat people left and right... There were hundreds of rapes going on and thousands of stabbings in the crowd. It was just off the cuff and crazy and James Hetfield (the lead singer/rhytm guitarist) has said that if they knew that this shit was going to go down, they would have stopped playing. But man, that 1+ million people in the crowd... That was a literal sea of people... One crazy show for "some" crazy people! They were advised to not go to Russia for a show, but they did regardless and this epicness was what followed.

    This was the Monsters of Rock show not long after the Berlin Wall came down, uniting East and West for the first time since before World War Two. These kids had never got to see a live show for the most part, much less listening to any music like this without being jailed...or worse. The BEST thing about it was the bands all did it for FREE. Watching history being made... estimates were anywhere from one and a half million to three million depending on the source for the duration of the show. But, I doubt how one could come up with any number that is close to correct. Awesome....when Metal met vodka.

    This is an old post so don’t even know if you’re following the comments on it anymore.
    While your slightly off on the timeline of what was going on..
    The tent city testimony at the beginning was about the failed military coup from several months before that marked the collapse of the Soviet Union. This concert was held a bit later.
    Regardless of how accurate you were of the fact in the moment, you certainly got the emotional vibe of the entire crowd down pat.
    The way I explain it to people who did live through it/ watch it live on TV.... imagine the LA riots after Rodney King , the unrest after travon Martin, Eric garner, what went on in St Louis and Detroit, the Watts riots, what happened in Selma.
    Imagine all that rage and frustration and disparity. Now imagine instead of being racially oppressed you you were being oppressed by your OWN PEOPLE. Now imagine all that rage and without weapons and without hope of surviving the night and you stood should to should with people you didn’t even know but in THAT moment you were brothers and sisters FOR LIFE and you stared into the muzzles of hundreds of tanks and through sheer rage and despair and courage you made THEM back down and toppled the largest empire in history. And now you are here in this field and this is your first taste at what freedom has to offer. That is the emotion coming from every person there rolling down like waves and hitting these for guys on this stage playing a song they have played almost every night for the last 2-3 years.
    That’s what this video is about

    You resemble Sly Stone from the 60's and 70's. React to him. He was one of my first concerts.

    You SHOULD have heard this song. It took Metallica to the mainstream back in 1991.

    Welcome to the end of the "Cold War". I was USAF 1984-1987 and sent a few jets up to escort Russian bombers away from our coast. If you lived in the USSR back then anything American would have put you in the gulag (hard labor prison). Once the wall fell in 1989 it opened the freedom everyone wanted there. People take our freedom for granted but it cost us to have it. Salute 07

    If you want to see an audience reaction, you should look at Creeping Death from this same show.
