  • The Tarawera Falls are spectacular with the water surging straight out of fissures high in a cliff face. The bluff was formed by a massive lava flow! Continuing on up the bluff to the top of the falls you find where the Tarawera River disappears underground, astonishing that such a big river does that. There’s numerous waterfalls and cascades as you walk further upstream and the blues of the water is remarkable. A couple of hours further on, I reached the Tarawera Outlet, Tarawera Lake and enjoyed a picnic lunch of lettuce wraps at the DOC camp.

The road to the Camp is currently closed so there’s foot or boat access only. It’s a lovely camp site which I plan to return to for an overnight camp.
The track is very well benched and you access it via Kawerau. Permits from the Kawerau iSite are required as you enter through private forest land. Don’t rely on Google Maps as there’s closed roads, iSite will advise which roads are open.

Thanks for watching and subscribing Sandra. In this video I was experimenting with Paleo trail food. It worked well and was very sustaining 😀 the challenge is on the multi day hikes, trying to avoid the commercial dehydrated food. Have you any suggestions, I’m always looking for new ideas?

Definitely wow! Omgosh.. That river looks so clean and beautiful. But the waterfall adds a different dimension. Very stunning indeed 😃 Thank-you you to for all your info and track descriptions. Very helpful for future references. 😊

Thanks for your kind words. The river colour was incredible, so clear but so cold also. The waterfall was truly astonishing, a beautiful walk 😀

The beauty of this one took me by surprise Nana Nans 😍. Apparently you can swim in the river but the flow above the waterfall was so fast I wasn’t game to 😅. Thanks for watching, I do appreciate you taking the time 🙂

    Lake Taupo or Rotorua?

Thanks for watching Andrea, it’s Lake Tarawera, walking in from Kawerau. Alternative is to boat across and do it in the opposite direction which would also be cool 😎
