THANK YOU for posting this! My father as a 19 year old boy took this ship to Canada by himself to start a new life in 1961. I met my wife 45 years later, and HER father took this same boat as a 9 year old in 1951. This boat essentially brought two families together and created 4 children and 6 grandchildren thus far!
My late uncle also took this ship in 1961. He escaped communist Bulgaria, stayed in a refugee camp in Greece, and finally made it to New York by way of Nova Scotia.
I sailed on the October 1947 Genoa to New York crossing of the Vulcania at age 9 months with my parents escaping Communist Sofia, Bulgaria by way of Trieste. Third class passage got them a cabin with bunk beds, hardly the grandeur of the rest of the ship. Thank you for posting.
I was very happy to find this video here. As a 17 year old lad from Slovenia I boarded Saturnia in Trieste in 1956 to sail to USA. I have been a US citizen since 1961 and had a very fine professional career in academe. Thank you for posting. Eau Claire, WI
I came to Canada as a one year old toddler with my mother Ida 21 years old and my father Frank also 21, along with my grandmother and my mom’s two teenage brothers. We landed in Halifax Pier 21 aboard the Vulcania.
I sailed round trip from NYC on M/S Vulcania in 1957 as a 5 year old with my parents in third class. We were going to Trieste to visit my father's family. I still have some memories of the trip. Going eastbound to Europe in May, many crew members said that it was the stormiest crossing they could remember. The return trip in September was calm.
I cruised on this ship in 1956 from Italy to New York , after missing my original boat, the Andia Doria which sank after hitting the vessel, Stockholm. This was a memorable trip. Thank you for posting this!
For many years I've seen black-and-white photos of ocean liners so it's extra enjoyment to see now only new photos but ones that are in color. I like the way the beds had curtains that could be pulled around them for privacy and to reduce light. Looking at the bridges and funnels of the sisters you can get an idea of design elements that would appear in the 1950's.
They were still in service until the mid 1960s - both ships were redone after WWII in a more modern style than their original baroque decor. Especially interesting were the incredible printed fabrics used for the curtains in these ships and the newer ones (Andrea Doria/C. Colombo) - Italy was known for its great textiles. And the mod furniture and color schemes. I did read that the Vulcania had a bas relief by the artist Mascherini in one of the bars - would love to see that and wonder if it still exists. And by the way the food was not all Italian - it was advertised as “continental” of which Italian specialties were only one segment.
My grandparents, mother and aunt came to the US on the Saturnia in May 1955. Although they didn't travel first class, they made friends with people that they still are friendly with today. Mom said the ship was very luxurious.

Hello--I am researching my mother's trip on the Saturnia in April 1940. Would you have any images from that time period? I am looking for information about Third Class Travel during the war years.
Pier 21 Museum in Halifax Nova Scotia has many photos, stories, memorabilia, etc on display. They also run a play about all the reasons for immigration back then, including war brides.
