The way ESPN handled this was outstanding. This was completely unexpected and then keeping football, records, etc out of the conversation was very important. Even the ones in the studio did amazing. Honestly, great job ESPN.

We were sitting 10 rows up on the bills side by the 25 that the bills were scoring on. Nobody knew what was happening, but incredible in the worst way how quickly they had an ambulance coming out and all that… stadium went dull. There was no service, so most knew nothing until they could make a call out to somebody watching on TV. Incredibly horrifying and nothing but prayers, peace, and love to Damar and his family. The Bengals fans were nothing but classy and clearly, tonight was a moment much bigger than football.
I was on the opposite side of the stadium. I'm sorry you had to see that up close. Nothing but love and respect from Who Dey Nation. Prayers up.

@@troymazzei5976 we honestly couldn’t see much, I had turned around to say something to the Bengals fans behind us about the catch and didn’t even see him fall. I’m mostly just concerned for Damar. I turn 24 in two weeks, so it’s a very humbling reminder to see a 24 year old man go through that… I can’t imagine being his family right now. I’m still in disbelief and feel sick to my stomach, just praying for the best for him right now.

As a Bills fan watching the event unfold, a big shout out to the Bengals fans. The respect and reverence the fans showed for an opposing player conveyed the genuine dignity of the fans in Cincinnati. Hat's off to those fans.

Been watching the NFL for 40+ years can't remember anyone needing CPR on the field ..... really hope this guy pulls through.
I'm obviously older than you. I can remember Chuck Hughes dying of a heart attack on the field. He played for the Lions. I'm impressed that that McDermott had so much respect for his player that he took his team off the field. In 1971, the game was continued.
I seen Chuck Hughes die in 1971. On field, on television, never forgot.
In 1997 Reggie Brown linebacker for the Lions. Collapsed on the field and stopped breathing because of a neck injury. Team doctors preformed CPR and he was intubated on the field. He survived but was Paralyzed. Since then I believe he recovered most of his movements.

10/24/1971 chuck Hughes died suddenly on the field. I seen it live on television,never forgot.

This has rocked my soul! My 34 year old son passed away in the hospital due to nurses negligence. He coded after surgery they gave him CPR FOR 9 MINUTES AND BROUGHT BACK HIS HEART BUT NOT IN TIME FOR HIS BRAIN. SI I AM NOT IN A GOOD PLACE . I PRAY FOR THE FAMILY AND DAMAR.

Fans wanted to see a matchup of two AFC teams with Super Bowl hopes, instead turned into a Night of Sadness. When both teams left the FIELD, it was a first i ever saw and you knew it WAS SERIOUS. Prayers to the Family for sure!

I was raised on a farm and I helped many times to bring a young animal into this world. I then worked for 25 years seeing people die and many times seeing and helping with CPR. It is shocking in different ways to be a part of that. It's like being next to the port hole of life. One is wonderful the other is horrible. I pray for this young life.
In basic training, a guy got woken up to do firewatch, and he collapsed a few moments later. They gave him CPR until the ambulance arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The crazy thing is me like most of the other people slept right through it and didn’t hear a thing. They told us when we woke up that he had a heart attack and died
I’ve done CPR at least four times in my career. Out of the four, two survived. I’m told that’s actually pretty good because people don’t usually come back unless it’s done right away. I would tell everyone to learn it and get a home defibrillator. They are pretty easy to use now with audio instructions as soon as you turn on the machine. Heart disease is like the number one killer these days. You’re absolutely right about the “port hole of life.”

Especially in a situation that turned to life and death in literally a heartbeat. I’m a minister and have been at the bedside of the dying, and it’s so hard even then, even when they have been suffering for years as my own dad had been. But also eternity is beautiful in this way and not to be fearful of it - simply put your hands in Gods hands through faith in Christ. He holds eternity in His hands. You can rest in the fact that through Christ you will pass from death to life. We pray and pray hard that Damar lives and thrives!! The only “silver lining” is that this causes us all to think about eternal things. Look into Jesus and maybe start with John 1. God bless.

The scary part was that he suffered a cardiac arrest after that tackle to the chest. He literally died on the field and miraculously revived by the medical personnel a few minutes later. To a Parent, that’s definitely hard to watch and hear your child who has to go through that and knowing the caution of this sport can be. Really hoping Damar Hemlin gets better and swiftly recovers…

Praying 🙏🏼 that Hamlin will be okay. The only comparison I have is Christian Eriksen (currently on Manchester United and the Denmark 🇩🇰 national team). He had a cardiac arrest mid-game during the 2021 Euros. It’s always scary to see. Thoughts and prayers with him and his family. Hopefully Hamlin can make a full recovery like Eriksen did.

This a man a few weeks ago who did a Christmas toy drive for kids so they got gifts for Christmas. He's also 24 years old in the prime of his life an the way he fell on that field tonight was just heartbreaking to see. You see guys take these hits on a weekly basis an sometimes it don't register when your watching the damage these hits can do an tonight we saw that first hand. But what a beautiful sight the bengals & bills fans outside the hospital keeping a vigil for him an I hope he gets through this an he can make a recovery

Nah bro. Commotio cordis is extremely rare, and you go down immediately. You don't get up quickly and then pass out like Hamlin. 1600 cardiac events for athletes in just the last year. All since the mandated "medical procedure" Only an average of 29 per year in previous years.
We all forget they are human beings. We watch these gladiators every week and think nothing of these plays. Usually we just think its just another play. Im not a bills fan, i wasnt even watching the game. But this really has alot of people thinking (including myself) how hard this sport is. What these people put their bodies through every week. Ive never seen anything like this in the NFL. I just hope he pulls through.

A doctor explained that it was a combination of the blunt trauma to the chest w something in the heart cycle. I’m not smart enough to explain it but there are medical doctors w TH-cam channels who have jumped on it

We know injuries are a part of the game, but when we're talking about someone in critical condition like this, everyone just wants him to be ok. Don't care about a comeback, a season, or anything. Just want that young man to stay with us.
I can't believe this happened live, seeing it was so surreal. I knew right away the way he fell back that something was wrong....such a travesty. I hope he can make it, and prayers to his mother and family that had to see it happen.

I don't know who Damar Hamlin is, but what I do know is he is a human being above all else. This world has fallen pretty cold over the past couple years due to COVID, Politics and so on, but we all need to understand that the only thing that has changed is our mindset. We need to get back to living with each other and not simply among one another. Life is precious and people are primarily good by nature. We need to start loving and respecting one another for the world's sake. My heart breaks for this man and his family. I truly hope he will be okay. As someone who did not watch the game I was dumbstruck as to why the game was postponed. I now understand. Players and coaches did not want to continue after seeing that. Respect.
The NFL did the right thing, there was just no way this game could have continued. Once the gravity of the situation hit, nothing else mattered other than to save the life of Damar Hamlin. Football as we know it, no matter how much you love it, it is just a game at the end of the day. When something this dire happens, this is when you need to sit up straight, wake up and put football aside. Damar first and foremost is a son, a brother and a friend. This is a tragic situation. I just saw Brian Sutterer MD posted a video diagnosing it as Commotio Cordis. If it turns out to be true, then I am afraid the survival rate is not good. This is the time when we all need to pray for Damar.

I think Scot Van Pelt did a tremendous job having to unexpectedly take over after the tragic event. Most importantly he displayed respect for Hamlin and his family. To me SVP was a strong voice, someone to look up to, as he helped people scared from what they saw to realize we were all in the same boat, just hoping for Hamlin’s recovery

Sadly seen it before with footballers (soccer players) in the past. Marc Vivien Foe immediately came to mind though I don't know if it was the hit that really played a big part. I also remember Antonio Puerta in Spain. This is sad and I hope he recovers.
I was literally commenting what a hard hitting game this was as this occurred. They had just taken a Bill player back for concussion protocol moments earlier. It was a heavyweight match and both teams were playing at a high level. It was such a gut punch when it became obvious this situation was not evolving like the last player who walked off the field. The coverage was proper by ESPN and its entire staff. I think they showed one, maybe two replays before the event evolved into what it was. At that point they never showed it again which was a very alert and proper thing to do. The hit itself was really unprovocative and nothing you would consider to be impactful. In retrospect it was just the intensity of the hit at that exact location on his chest that created that moment. Prayers for a full recovery for Damar and peace and comfort for all his family, team mates, and close friends.

As a Dolphins fan, seeing Tua getting two concussions this season and now Damar who plays for the Bills who are in the AFC East with the dolphins, this is devastating not only to the family, but to his team, all other teams and I would hope to all fans. I hope Damar has a speedy recovery and is able to continue playing in the NFL.

I watched Bears game as a child when Chuck Hughes died. They worked on Hughes for a long time and he did not make it. I hope Hamlin makes it. This is soooo 😭
