15 Mile Cattle Drive Through the Black Hills

  • Our ranch is located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where my family settled and started ranching in 1883.
I work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jaques, and my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town. We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.

Carson another great video, there is something magic watching cattle moving through that beautiful countryside. Your Dad is a quite tough bloke but give him grandkids to hold and he melts. What a great family event, a lot of riding to get the cattle together. Trump surely likes a few solids in his water. Thanks again from Down Under.

Love to listen to those cows making sure their babies are keeping up. There’s an old saying that I think applies to moving cattle as much as it does anything else. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

So happy I found your channel! I'm so impressed with this whole drive. Everyone stayed so calm and eased those mamas and babies right along. Would give anything to be part of a family and friends network like yours. Really special! The comment you made about streets of gold when you went through the aspens was profound to me. The whole landscape is heavenly. Thank you for taking us along!

Congrats on another great episode, Carson. Not only is your camera work and composition getting to be professional, your editing is wonderful-I really admire the genuine flavor and essence you portray. I loved to see your dad as the tender grandpa while in his natural setting and surrounded by friends and family; I'm sure many guys would have been talking with your helpers instead of cuddling babies and toddlers. You are a lucky guy.

It's great to see the family side of the drive. Too many people think raising cattle is an industrial/corporate operation from start to finish and don't realize the families behind it. It makes me wonder what the true percentage is for all cattle started on family ranches without including feedlot and other down the line businesses.

good to see the support, we have to have two flaggers and on a paved roadway the sheriff has to show up and use flashing lights, we run them down the mountain from Summer graze about 53 miles, 10 of it is on pavement, remember the current administration IS NOT Agricultures friend, many around us are going under

What a wonderful video!! We are like you in that we dont have any snow yet either. That part has been super nice! I sure hope you guys didnt have any nasty motorists to deal with on the main road. We get ridiculous neighbors that throw hissy fits if they have to wait on our private dirt road for even a few minutes during cattle drives. I just dont understand that kind of mindset. If you cant appreciate a cattle drive in progress and feel like you are part of it all? There must be something wrong with you. LOL!

Hi Carson, great video of moving your cows out of the Black Hills. It is a bummer about Mr. D. Hopefully he will heal up quickly. Good you didn't have anymore problems along the way. This is the first time moving cattle that you had the drone. Great drone footage of the drive along with the music. Is Nick your sister's husband? Thank Nick for the story of working with cattle without proper constraints, that had to be challenging. Even though the weather started out cold, you sure ended up with a beautiful day with the sun and colorful fall foliage. Can't imagine how stiff and sore you all were with being on and off horses and riding for 9 1/2 hours. Sorry for the long comment, but really enjoyed this video.
