Swan Silvertones at there best,my dad every Sunday morning before church,use to put on the Silvertones and play his guitar and wake up everybody,church was very Good on Sundays
Pure Gospel. Gospel at its best. Claude Jeter, Louis Johnson, Paul Owens and the other members of the Swan Silvertones make you want to get up and shout. I saw the Swan Silvertones and the Spirit of Memphis Quartet in my home city of Charleston, SC in 1951 when I was 10 years old. They got me hooked on Gospel music and now at 76 it is still the favorite music for my spouse, grown children, and me.
Dear Ms Lawrence - thank you for sharing your memories. What an amazing experience it must have been, seeing those great groups in their prime... I hope you enjoy other selections on this channel - for example, this live 1958 recording by the Spirit Of Memphis Quartet, with Joe Hinton on lead.

By the way, I am a man, Mr. Carol Lawrence. My mother did not know how to spell my name for a male child (Caroll), so I have lived with it for 76 years lol. I am blessed to have seen and met Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers and also saw Johnny Taylor and the Soul Stirrers,; The Dixie Hummingbirds, the Sensational Nightingales with Julius Cheeks, the Swanee Quintet, the Brooklyn All Stars, The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi with Archie Brownlee and the Five Blind Boys of Alabama with Clarence Fountain both groups together, the Harmonizing Four, the Pilgrim Travelers and the female groups, the Caravans when James Cleveland was their pianist; the Davis Sisters, Clara Ward and the Ward Singers, and even Mahalia Jackson in 1955. I have taken my family to Gospel concerts here in Virginia to see the Soul Stirrers, Dixie Hummingbirds, Mighty Clouds of Joy, Walter Hawkins and the Family and many more of the contemporary singers and groups. Thank God for Gospel.

Both Claude Jeter and Paul Owens had departed the Swan Silverstones by the time this was recorded but it still sounds very good.
My dad (guitar player) and uncle (lead singer) were in a group that were on a TV program preceding the Silvertones coming onstage. When the finished, the Silvertones called them back out. This was somewhere in Texarkana or Louisiana in the late 60s early 70s. Their group was called The Heavenly Travelers (from Pittsburg Tx). If you have any footage of this I would really love to hear/see it. Keep doing what you do. Thank you.
That's very interesting. Sadly, I don't have any idea how to find that footage - I think that in those days, local TV broadcasts were live and stations usually didn't keep tapes. It would be great to see it, though. Did the Heavenly Travelers ever make records? I think they appeared regularly on radio in Mt Pleasant TX in the 1950s/1960s.
@@DeepGospelSound no they didn't make any records, and I know that they were well known in our region but i didn't know that they appeared regularly on radio shows in Mt. Pleasant. My dad was the last member left and he passed 2 yrs ago. I have some recordings that my uncle recorded in church and I love it, but wish I could see the live footage. Thank you so much.
