My previous and first job out of college was a direct support professional; for 2 years I worked directly with people who have developmental disabilities in their homes. It is an underpaid job with high turnover. While DSPs make a difference, they also need to make a living (wage).

The ARC is my home away from home and my individuals are my family... I cook, clean, bath ,take to and from work or day programs. I work 12 to 16 hr shifts. I don't get to see my 4 children or 6 grandchildren cause I'm always taking care of my individuals whom I love dearly. Weather it's my group home or another one where I pick up to help out cause we don't have staff. All the staff are over worked and underpaid. With out funds people aren't applying at the ARC and my biggest 2 concerns are what's gonna happen to me and the individuals if we don't get the funds that we so desperately need.

I have a severe traumatic brain injury and I worked in the Florida Court for 4 years and was fired when I had a seizure. I have not been able to get help.
It always comes back to the EEOC whose office is in the court itself. I had to go to court by myself. Guess who the judge found in favor of?
    Yes, himself, the court.
