I have seen how fast those bears can move. He could have been on the hunter before the arrow could be used. Very dangerous incident. 44 Magnum. Dont leave home without it.
Same is true if the hunter had a 44. It's important to remember that the only guaranteed insta-kill is to sever the brain from the spine. As you mentioned, at the distance between bear and hunter in the video, that hunter would likely only get one shot. And when the bear is lunging with virtually zero closing-distance... making that insta-kill shot is so unlikely that we might as well call it 'impossible'. I admit that watching this video was thrilling to me, but there's no way I'd want to be that close to a bear that size, no matter what weapon I might have in my hands.
@robertseafield5810 The exact same thing as you said applies to the 44 Magnum, you genius... You are really clueless aren't you? 44 Magnum is the solution to everything. Typical american 😂
@@Penny_Wolf I think it's important to honor the difference between 'what it looks like' and 'what it is'. It's a bear. I has no higher cognitive processing. It's pure instinct, and it has evolved (or, if you prefer, was designed) to be a predator: a very capable killing machine whenever it's instincts may lead it in that direction. They can move very quickly. They can crush a human skull quite easily. Their claws would render a deadly evisceration to almost anything on the receiving end of such a swipe. So... Unlike humans, who do have higher cognitive ability, and who are held accountable under law for certain cause & effect interactions, bears will do what bears are going to do, and that can change in the blink of an eye. And with this in mind... If one is going to err in such close proximity to such a fearsome creature, one ought to err on the side of 'maximizing survival' rather than 'extending kindness' to a creature that is incapable of interpreting such gestures as 'reasons not to attack, kill, and eat'.

I have been around a lot of black bears in the last 25 years. This dude in ASAT camo has nerves of steel and bigger balls than the bear. Some of you know that is a fact.
I have a black bear that size in my yard frequently; have walked around the side of the garage and we're suddenly that same distance apart and startle each other. Black bears aren't aggressive; more curious than anything. We just look each other for a minute and then back away. Now a female 1/2 that size with cubs is a black bear I wouldn't mess with; they'll tear you apart.
my neighbors dog did that, then put his head against my leg. " wew " i reached down, scritched behind his ear, & said " o.k. you wanna be friends, that's O.K.
Glad you did not kill the bear, he was just curious and maybe not very good eyesight or ocustome to people feeding him and had no fear and he was no threat.
People in the comments talking about the hunter needing to change his pants after this experience. All joking aside, I think the guy was extremely strong-willed.
Excellent job! The same thing happened to me, minus the video. I had the same outcome. I did not want to shoot this beautiful animal out of season. We came back in season and took two black bears, but the one in my encounter wasn’t one of them.
It was just curious, thanks for not shooting it , I am a hunter myself & have had many a deer walk up to say hello , then go , never took the curious ones
I've been charged by a black bear with nothing to defend myself stood my ground and it finally turned away, but not as close as you? nerves of steel!! I would have shot??
Bear never gave him a broadside shot. Hit that bear with the angle he had and he's likely to get mauled. I bet if bear turned sideways he was shooting.

Most of agressive bears have been "naturally selected" by courageous men and their guns, left the docile and tamed. Interesting how starting carrying a stick changed our fate from prey to the greatest predator on this sad planet.
bear spray is great, when and if it works, and it does sometimes not work, for various reasons. 44 Mags usually work in high wind, on crazy bears that are adrenelian packed, and crazy in breeding season, or when protecting a fishing hole along a creek or cubs. Believe me, you that rely on spray and less bright then the single arrow hopeing it will take a bear out with one shot...... Oh I forgot to say, usually 44 Mags are 6 shots that are as impacting as a mack truck, they take lims off when hit with one of the 6 shots.
If that bear was brown and displaying same mannerisms it would have turned out exactly the same. That bear was showing zero aggression, no need for people to kill everything.
I think if you bow hunt enough, every bowhunter has experienced similar situations when stalking their game, whether a large carnivore or a wild goat etc.
After seeing a verified 900lb Pennsylvania black bear running full tilt 50 ft from me i got a whole new perspective on them. If they are in bad mood you are done.
This BLACK bear didn't seemed aggresive, but curious. I have seen many close encouters with black bears, where they just observed humens and left. I'm not saying these animals are not dangerous, but you can see from it's behaviour, if it wants to attack or it just observs you.
Everyone keeps saying how brave he was not to release but truthfully if he had he'd be dead...The hunter that is. It takes a lot of time for a bear to bleed out, and in that time the bear would tear him to shreads and probably the camera man too. Then it would be up to forensics to figure out what happened. "oh, a camera!"
YOU cant credit camo totally to that happening like it did. The camo most likely numbed senses like sight that were aged and, or smell the bear did not have working to his benefit, and it appears he sensed no danger or a human so close. Old/ageing does that kind of deficiency in , YES bears also....
Sometimes that projectile needs to fly even though you don’t want to hurt the animal . If that bear sprung into kill mode it would be a really tough battle to get a knife or pistol out but he did have his bud filming .
This was a Boo Boo of epic proportions in the making. I don't think I would have raised the bow to this bear. Both got lucky that it did not turn out differently.
And then the bear caught a wiff of what the hunter had just deposited in his shorts and ran away 😅

Very true.
That is knowing a bear 🐻 behavior underpressure. A true hunter and sports man. And a bit of luck and guts.Well done.
Smart man. You can't outrun a bear. You may as well stand your ground.
There was no danger at all for the hunter as long as he could outrun the camera man.
