Had a sort of odd looking, direct speaking guy come into my parts department in Asheville, NC back around 2008. We started talking about politics, country, philosophy, old man to young. He told me he was in poor health and not long for the world, essentially. Less than five minutes after he left it clicked for me; That was f'n Tom Clancy! I'm sure it was him. Strange honor and I wish I had picked up on it a few minutes sooner than I did.

why does that matter? clancy's strongest novels were rich with subtext and strong political commentary; almost all of his works contained genuine messages that were relevant at the time and many years later. "but he's a genre novelist" is a rather elitist perspective that glazes over the power and purpose behind fiction writing and other arts. the content of a book, film, or otherwise goes beyond its surface level and failure to recognise that is either willful ignorance or arrogant
