He told me he was in poor health and not long for the world, essentially. Less than five minutes after he left it clicked for me; That was f'n Tom Clancy! I'm sure it was him. Strange honor and I wish I had picked up on it a few minutes sooner than I did.
The part about financial independence struck a major chord with me. I'd heard this talk years ago, but only now, after a few more years of experience and learning, do his words make immeasurable sense to me.
Take a look at Jack Ryan as a character…. One of the reason he is able to act the way he does is precisely because he is independently wealthy and is not beholden to anyone…..

Well it is interesting that Jack Ryan, who is many ways a projection of Tom Clancy, always registered himself as an independent. He didn’t have a political ideology per se but he believed in what worked. However I think it’s safe to say that Jack Ryan would never have become President in the real world unfortunately 😢
