    When you are done wash the charcoal with the clean water so you can use it again.

    How many times can that filter be used before it stops filtering water?

  • @magi1969
    @magi1969 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah, it's important to note that this is just for emergencies, when you don't have a proper water filter and you want to treat dirty water at least somehow. It doesn't remove any loose pathogens in the water, but it probably does lessen them a bit by removing those embedded in silt or humus. This is probably an excellent way to treat visibly dirty water before purifying it in sunlight (6+ hours). Sunlight doesn't sterilize water properly if there's those bigger particles in the water.

    Step 1 : Wash your charcoal with clean water! I am missing something here?Step 2 : Take out your osciloscopeBy the way, if you can make charcoal by buring wood. I suggest you simply distil the water - that'll be pure enough. Don't forget the oscilloscope.

    First of all, thank you for your post.
    But I feel that the project relies on washing the filtering materials. How exactly do people ensure the gravel and charcoal is clean for use? What water do you use to wash with?

      Well kid, the thing is that its called "survival" if you would say. Think about it, what happened if you were to be stuck somewhere without any food, water, or shelter, hell, think as if it was a zombie apocalypse even. So who would you call for? The police? Hahaha, they are probably fleeing with their tails wagging behind them. Also even if they weren't, do you really think they will save you? I don't know, maybe to busy saving millions of other people before they reach you? Either way, so how are you going to satisfy your needs if you can that is, you obviously can't without knowing how to grow your own food or to purify water. So think before you talk kid, this is how the trolls going to hit you id you don't.

      @@itzatarii_254 yes a life straw filter works this is another method my question is do you carry you life straw on a daily basis I'm guessing not but if you do kudos to you tho as most of the population including my self we don't keep one on us daily I do have one but I keep it in my 72hour bag tho I have plenty of knowledge such as things like this that can be used in different situations I watch things like this as ways to see how different was of the same method work but I wont disagree with you about getting a life straw bc I think every one should have one but that said for example you loose it it's nice to know you have other options I diss agree with the size of his but it still works now yes it's more effort than preparation ahead of time but this is better than nothing now if you would like to talk about survival water techniques that I've used and that are effective that yes may take more preparation than using a live straw but yield much mor water I am willing to talk about it

      +Kubisek9 Ya I agree with U. commonly we read ppl survive drinking their own urine or rain water. But not by filtering the dirty water. Ha ha.

    • @ginofoogle6944
      @ginofoogle6944 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Shenba vv people survive DESPITE drinking their own urine.. no survival expert anywhere would advise you to drink your own urine in a dire situation. This common misconception has been reinforced by media outlets to get more viewers. Shows like the one with bear grylls (Edward Grylls) do the stupidest and most dangerous things to get viewers.. Alot of the things shown on those shows have very little to do with survival.. Ray Mears on the other hand seems legit.

    • @shenbavv7796
      @shenbavv7796 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, let me ask you a simple question. Suppose you are caught in an emergency situation, lets say underneath piles of rubble. You are injured. You need water to survive until help arrives, what would U do to live if you are left with no other choice but drink your own urine? Would you choose to die or live? Media might have made up the stories but there are people who really survived with urine. Anyway, thanks for your explanations. Have a nice day.

    • @ginofoogle6944
      @ginofoogle6944 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Shenba vv They didn't survive because they drank their own urine buddy.. do some more research on what drinking urine does to the body. You can fabricate an emergency solar still and use urine to get water.. And if i was caught under rubble i wouldn't drink my own urine because that would make the situation worse.. This is not open for debate because it's a known fact.

    If you have rope or a shirt you can cut a strip of cloth from, you can simply put one end of the rope or cloth on the dirty water, and then put the clean Container below it so when the water absorbs interject rope or cloth gravity will put it down into the clean container. Only the water will be absorbed and it will filter out though the cloth or rope, while gravity pulls it down into your clean container. you can filter water this way with out needing fire or charcoal. The way above is OK, but what he doesn't tell yours that you still have to boil the water !! This way is Kindve a pre filtering before boiling the water to make it safe. This way alone is not a safe for drinking, it is simply a way to clean the star out before boiling. the method I said is used by the British military, and makes the water safe enough to drink without having to boil it. This method works best if you have two containers, but you only NEED ONE container.

  • @jaredwilliams6379
    @jaredwilliams6379 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thats not very safe at all. I hike and have to deal with real purification methods to rely on my water. Any water you find in an emergency situation will most likely have more chemical, bacterial or viral impurities. Your method does not account for the most important impurities and just encourages people to drink dangerous water that looks cleaner (most could find water crystal clear anyway so thats a mute point anyway). Yes this would help a lot for city water just like your average britta but in a survival case you would be lucky to even have chlorine in water. In an emergency find natural water, boil for 10 minutes and dont mind a few floaties. A lot safer and realistic way to safely drink water in an emergency situation

    • @jasminblazevic5656
      @jasminblazevic5656 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is usually used when you need to wash your hands or clothes and things like that, but if you need water for drinking and cooking, then it's just as you said boil water and that it. A lot safer and quicker way, and you can use water for more things.

    • @jaredwilliams6379
      @jaredwilliams6379 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Too true. This method, boiling, iodine, bleach and many more methods can be used in conjunction with each other to get particle free and biologically safe water

I don't carry those items around with me or even have them at home, But I guess I will have to Buy them to have around just in case. Never Know I guess.

      I laugh when people say these things when you went into the outback didnt you go without warning, .....In case of emergency all you need is this ....lol
      In america today we are so over populated the chances of getting stuck are are very rare, BUT I do live in western Colorado and les stroud of survivor man and bear grylls both did shows not far from here , we are remote and people do go wonder off on hikes and rides get lost heat exhaustion dehydration and die , we do have a thing call back pack kits you take in your car, it has all the needs.
      One last thing all those stupid TH-cam videos you see on knives, machetes, lights, fire starters, that start out with IF THIS IS ALL YOU HAVE meaning just that knife and nothing else for example, water tablets, knife machetes,light,fire starter,compass,paracord, Advil and survival blanket well guess what all those things fit and then some into a small backpack under your seat and you can survive for days easy if needed, welcome to the wild wild west.....lol

    for emergency situatios you can simply put a glass of water and then cover with a plastic bottle cuted in half , and the water will be evaporated and it will make condensation in the plastic bottle leaving mud or salt water in the glass.. where can you get clean charcoal and clean sand in a emergency situation ?

In most situation this be fine just to boil it If it's very hot out, you may want to stay away from the fire or burn very little(have very little) to get a little black charcoal ( some how its sunny out) Using the black to help act as a heat sink for solar to work better. Sand or rocks are better than nothing. You can sit and rest in the shade while a solar still works. (just maybe lose less water then trying to tend to flames in the heat) Really depends what gear you have with you. / fire wood availability and how hot it is) Remember to start distillers asap if you can make one. Solar is an alternative to fire.

    Great idea! I'm glad you mentioned exposing the water to sunlight since the filtering process will make your water palatable, but may not remove pathogens. Boiling suspect water (at sea level) is always a good idea.

    I selected 7 of the flaws of the concept presented here - I hope that the scientist that you'll be some day will agree with me.
    1. the whole filter is no better than a bandana/shirt/etc folded a couple of times (which is much easier to use and more likely to have on you in an emergency situation).
    2. this filter does not eliminate the microorganisms from the water, so the filtered water is not safe to drink. if you rely on SODIS method to do that, you indeed need clear water for the UV to work, but... see point 1.
    3. also, SODIS method was developed for equatorial/tropical regions. solar radiation is different (weaker) in temperate/polar regions - do you have a reliable source for SODIS working in Canada, for example? during winter?
    4. you should disinfect the sand first (otherwise the filter itself might contaminate the water), preferably by boiling (but if you can boil your water, why bother with the filter?).
    5. "charcoal" is not "activated charcoal". you claim (in a response to a comment) charcoal to be 50% as effective as activated charcoal - do you have a reliable source for that piece of info? it might be better than nothing, but only grounded into a very fine powder, to provide a larger contact surface than when using pieces/chunks like presented in the video.
    6. the filter presented is very poorly constructed. to be effective, it should consist of much finer (and dimensionally homogenous) media - thus preventing the water to flow through preferential channels and not through the entire mass of the filter. it also should be packed tighter, to prevent the water from preferentially flowing between the plastic bottle and filtering media (you can clearly see that happening in the video).
    7. this is a slow filter, therefore it must be primed before using - which was not done in the video. to prime a slow filter, you should slowly fill it with water, from the bottom up. this way, the preferential flowing channels are less prone to form. also, you should use clean, good-to-drink water to prime it - which you don't have in the first place...
    I hope you will not take my comment the wrong way. I just wish people were more aware of what they're doing, both when posting and learning from a youtube video.

    The only reason I'm watching this video is for trying to save money. You see, I'm in college and my parents want me to pay the water bill. Normally my bill comes out as $60 (Yikes!), so what I'm gonna do is buy a brand new trash can from Walmart, then place it in my backyard deck and wait for it to rain, that way the raindrops pour into the trash can. Therefore I have free water to purify and I save a couple bucks on my water bill :D

    Here's an easier solution: While you're in the kitchen washing pebbles and sand you got from the garden, fill your glass from the sink with the clean water you need to wash the filtration materials with in the first place.

    • @andlir2
      @andlir2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. UV-light destroys the existing bacterias dna, making it impossible for them to multiply. Leaving a glass or plastic bottle with dirty water out in the sun, will make the water safe to drink. Pre filter it first, like in the video to ensure that the UV light can have good effect. Let it sit for 3-4 hours.

    • @Tourarounwarsaw
      @Tourarounwarsaw 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, not that salty, in that case people would pee salt instead of liquid, although around 30% of ocean water is salt, so 30 grams out of 100g ocean water X 5 = 150 grams of salt out of 100 gram water, WoW so why not to get table salt from our pee then? or maybe organize a company of people that would pee for salt production, nice business plan.

    How to Drink Water in Emergency Situation - Survival
    1- Get dirty water from dirty lakes, mud lakes, lakes, rivers.
    2- Pour dirty water into a preferred drinking cup.
    3- Slowly and gently raise cup while attempting to not spill.
    4- Open mouth just big enough to fit 1/4 - 2/4 of the cup in the mouth.
    5- Place water into mouth while making sure not to spill and doing so slowly, making sure 1/4 of mouth or 1/2 of mouth is filled with water.
    6- Use muscles inside of the mouth to help produce a sucking like motion in which goes down the throat to drink.
    7- Repeat steps 3-6 as much time needed until a feeling to not use muscles in the mouth to suck water into throat is present.
    8- Repeat the steps 1-7 as many times as needed.
    NOTE: If lower to middle region of stoumach is in distress, deal with it.

    a better process is to have cloth or coffee filters at the start, ideally, it is better to have sand as the last thing the water passes through, then the charcoal, it works better to first clean large char parts and refine it down to a black powder. this allows full surface tension so that more microbes and metals are pulled away, next you should have another piece of cloth or once again, a coffee filter in place, lastly, its a good idea to place small pebbles or rocks on top of this, this filter is not to really purify the water, its to remove any large debris away from the water before it is filtered. this will get the water to a 80 to 90% pure state but it is ALWAYS safer to boil your water if you plan on drinking it.
